two months pass...

Everyone should watch this film; I really think it sort of re-defines the genre. It is a brilliant gem coming out of the fetid cesspool that is the past 10 or 15 years of horror. Except the more you read/know about the plot, the less effective it is. And it's also sort of a one trick pony. But oh sheesh, what a fucking trick.

I actually used to carry this around on a thumb drive and just show it to people when we were hanging out.

i think ive posted a lot abt this movie already but it genuinely disturbed me and left me hollowed out and numb

i had nightmares about the photos of the other 'martyrs' in the basement for a p long time

Do you think that due to its effectiveness in chilling you it possesses some merit?

Cass McCars (Stevie D(eux)), Sunday, 28 August 2011 18:49 (twelve years ago) link

I mean, that's always an interesting discussion to have bcz so many times ppl are all "OH WELL IF IT MADE YOU FEEL SO EMOTIONAL THEN THE DIRECTOR MUST HAVE MADE A QUALITY FILM, EH? EH???" which I sort of used to agree with until I saw Funny Games and Dancer in the Dark which just felt needlessly cheap and manipulative.

i love this movie but i do not agree with yer feelings about the last 10-15 years of horror, i think its been kind of a new golden era tbh

Maybe I'm just judging it on a combination of a) excessive remakes b) horrible, horrible TV spots c) films I've managed to watch at parties/friends houses/here and there/etc but most everything I"ve seen is trash. Saw was nice, I liked The Descent too, but idk moooost of it seems to be absolutely terrible.

i think martyrs despite being an exploitation film is both less condescending and less manipulative than stuff like 'funny games' and 'dancer in the dark'. i mean theres supposed to be some vague political point in martyrs abt 'colonialism' or w/e but its v much in the background the real aim seems to be a kind of harrowing of the audience, an attempt to arrive at an endpoint of cinematic experience?

martyrs is 'effective' but whether it has merit is p slippery? its technically shoddy in places (esp the middle-ish part prior to her finding the dungeon) and i dont think has much to say about anything but suffering which is sorta a limited topic? i does achieve its aims imo whether you think those are aims worth achieving is the qn...

the biggest thing in martyrs favor at least versus cheap cinema of discomfort garbage like anti-christ is that its never really distancing and its not really playing games w/ implication or meaning if anything its antirational in a way that gives it real power

I thought this movie was totally shallow and padded the fuck out. It's like it was one of those weaker five page long short stories stretched out to feature film length. Didn't have much to say about anything, except how to make something out of nothing. All the portent of the intro scenes, or the home invasion scenes, or the escape from hallucinated horrors while the friend cleaned up the mess scenes ... pointless. Bunch of wheel spinning.

Liked it better than the utterly ridiculous "Inside." At last this movie was never silly.
