seriously. everything i've heard of his is just him stating the obvious in a semi-amusing way. OMFG WEED IS NOT AS HARMFUL AS ALCOHOL LOL TOOL ROX.

he is funny at times, but i havent heard him say anything that would class him as a "philosopher", rather than just a run of the mill comedian. he's like jerry seinfeld that talks about drugs and religion. WOW! KEEP BREAKING THAT NEW GROUND BUDDY.

so, the church doesnt allow gay marriages. what's the deal with that? oh look i'm dead suddenly i'm both poignant and hilarious. rage against the machine.

webber (webber), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 01:45 (twenty-three years ago)

at least you have a sense of humor about it...

ko hsüan, Tuesday, 22 October 2002 06:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah he was never actually all that FUNNY which I thought should be his main thing, being a comedian and all. Also he used my least favourite comedic technique, ie "Here's the funny bit! You'll notice cos I'm SHOUTING!"

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 09:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Some good points. If you weren't wrong, I'd agree with you.

Callum (Callum), Saturday, 26 October 2002 00:08 (twenty-three years ago)

OH WOW YOU JUST TOTALLY OWNED ME THERE. ICEBURN, I DONT KNOW HOW I CAN POSSIBLY RETORT.

You will die alone.

wow, you read this too?

webber (webber), Saturday, 26 October 2002 09:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah Calum is like the silent observer who knows all and sees all and reads all and laughs behind our backs! The last part of that sentence is not necessarily true but you never know... hey bro! come to auckland and elisabeth will give you a yo la tengo shirt. 4 real.

alex (alex), Sunday, 27 October 2002 11:35 (twenty-three years ago)

hey! i come to auckland ALL THE FREAKING TIME! and noone's EVER given me a yo la tengo t-shirt! THE INJUSTICE!

petra jane (petra jane), Monday, 28 October 2002 02:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I just happened to find that shirt again I meant to sell it on ebay! Plus it's too big for you. I'll shout you a go on police vs japanese mafia though.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Monday, 28 October 2002 02:56 (twenty-three years ago)

You don't come to Ak all that much. Going to the Datsun's show and leaving the same night doesn't really count!

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 28 October 2002 03:24 (twenty-three years ago)

hey elisabeth you should sell it on ebay instead of giving it to me, but if i do come up to auckland i will gladly accept a free go on the spacies!

calum, Monday, 28 October 2002 03:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Dude if I've still got it when yr up in auckland you should take a look at it because ebay can be a whole lot of hassle. Do you play Raiden??

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Monday, 28 October 2002 03:57 (twenty-three years ago)

i have no idea what raiden is, but i'll play it. do you play tetris?

calum, Monday, 28 October 2002 04:59 (twenty-three years ago)

It's plane flying and it's very exciting. I love tetris and puzzle bobble.

I think Bill Hicks is hillarious. Yes, he states the obvious. He states the obvious that nobody else up until him seemed to be saying.
Lots of people dislike him. Good.
http://www.konformist.com/2001/hicks.htm
Read the quotes on this site and tell me there is nothing poignant or funny there. Bill believed what he said. Unlike all these other comedians who said what they said just so they could make a dollar, Bill never sold out, never did commercials, never toned down the controversial material in his act to make it more "television friendly", and as a result, was a virtual unknown the entire time he was alive. I myself never even heard of Bill Hicks untill he died in 1994. Dennis Leary would still be playing in two-bit comedy hell-holes if it he hadn't stole his entire act from Bill Hicks. It's about time Hicks got the credit he deserves. Comics like him are few and far between.

Once again, I think we have encountered another example of people passing judgement without applying the proper amount of analysis.

The Man they call Dan (The Man they call Dan), Thursday, 13 March 2003 19:58 (twenty-three years ago)

no.
people havent stated the obvious before because ITS SO FUCKING OBVIOUS.

oh my god if drugs are so bad why are your favourite musicians taking them?

You're trying to say that NO ONE has thought about the irony of this before? EVERYONE IN THE FUCKING WORLD KNOWS THE BEATLES TOOK DRUGS.
I just don't find someone pointing that out particularly amusing. As I said before, he is funny at times, and I laughed at a few quotes on that site. But most of them just left me thinking "...so?"

webber (webber), Friday, 14 March 2003 04:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Webber, Bill Hick's was going against the tide of the 80's and early 90's, when America was being run by far-right republicans who in turn were being run by fundamentalist Christians. You will not find many comics in this time period who so vocally and intelligently spoke out against the trends that were overtaking this country.
Bill was stating the obvious, and amplifying it to get A REACTION.
He was trying to goad people into THINKING. Yes, I'm sure many people realized the irony of musicians taking drugs, but for some reason, people kept voting for politicians who would like to lock up any musician who even looked at a bottle of airplane glue funny. All these concepts that Bill was pushing may seem common and obvious now, but believe me, it was a different story before the cynical and nihilistic generation X attitude started taking over in the early 90's.
Bill wanted people to change, maybe even take ACTION. Voting, reading, taking a large amount of mind altering substances so they can re-think the nature of God, ANYTHING besides just sitting on their asses, drinking and watching TV, while the government sucks their wallets dry and keeps them in mental darkness.
The Beatles were used as an example, not a "Revelation". I'm sorry if you don't get the context of the quotes. Maybe you should listen to some complete performances of his, or read an interview. If you don't find it funny, well, I don't know what to tell you. He's not for everyone. I can honestly say that I've met a lot of people who do find him hillarious and have learned something from him.
Hell... even Tool, Rage Against the Machine, and Radiohead have dedicated albums to him.

i've gotten to hate people who think bill hicks is really deep and profound, because mostly he isn't, and i HATE it when he makes any kind of music-related 'joke' (the willie nelson thing excepted) because he's so bloody rockist (debbie gibson and tiffany? "i'll tell you a video i'd like to see them do together!" oh fuck OFF) but i always enjoy it when he drops the entire facade of being a guy who tells jokes for a living and starts raving like a lunatic.

classic: "i'm so sick of this child-worship thing! does that mean when people reach a certain age they're off your fucking love list? fuck your children, and fuck you with 'em! you either love all people of all ages and races or you shut the fuck up!"

also andrew, hicks usually doesn't shout his 'funny' bits, they usually come, in a mild self-deprecating tone, right after what audience members probably remember as the 'psychotic' bits: "THERE IS NO FUTURE! IT DOESN'T EXIST! ... i am available for children's parties, by the way."

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 04:42 (twenty-two years ago)

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 09:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard of a bunch of his routines on this comedy show on student radio years ago, I just don't REMEMBER the 'funny' bits at all.

Oh man, a friend loaned me a DVD with some of his performances and wow, what a major fucking letdown. After years of hearing how "legendary" and "important!" he was I couldn't believe how boring and really standard his material was. A couple funny lines here and there, but absolutely nothing to make me think of him as more than slightly above average. I couldn't stand the way he made those faces where he just knew how goddamned clever he was by stating the obvious.

you gone float up with it (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 29 December 2009 21:26 (sixteen years ago)

I really liked "Chicks Dig Jerks" when I was a kid, but I could never find a Bill Hicks album at Sam Goody. Then I downloaded a .wav off of his friend's website that was an audio trailer for some karate movie they made in college. I liked that. Then all the CD reissues came out , and I was like "Holy shit! Arizona Bay? Ths is that Tool shit!" but I was too poor to afford them or even afford a computer to illegally download them. I don't think I really want to know at this point.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 29 December 2009 21:52 (sixteen years ago)

By the way, when I heard Chicks Dig Jerks on the radio I was maybe 11 or something, you know?

buy a book of his routines- there are good ones out there. his material is much better in print ime.

Not a reactionary git, just an idiot. (darraghmac), Tuesday, 29 December 2009 23:38 (sixteen years ago)

I mean, he was important in the 80s. it's only a letdown because everyone has ripped him for 20 years and his fans are invariably dipshits

i would suspect some folks get turned off by the apparent misogyny in his humor but i've never heard it discussed.

xxp i dunno, imo so much of his humor depends on (or is enhanced by) his delivery that i can't picture it working in print. that said, his delivery is pretty love it or hate it, i guess.

OTM about everyone ripping him off for 20 years, though. Not that this is necessarily bad.

kenan, Wednesday, 30 December 2009 17:29 (sixteen years ago)

The 'goat boy' bits always used to annoy me... This talk show presenter called Tommy Boyd played the Jay Leno sketch on the radio, the next day I went out to buy Rant in E Minor, which I still think is the best and possibly, for the non obsessive, the only BH tape worth getting... Maybe because I started listening to him is why I prefer the audio stuff to the DVDs

I used to think he was great, but I'm not sure how appropriate his negativity or cynicism is nowadays.
