WELL CAN I?

Critical mass if u ask me

plaxico (I know, right?), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 01:12 (fourteen years ago) link

What exactly does a check look like? I'm thinking of little checkmarks, like when you check yes or no on a tax form, but all over the place.

bamcquern, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 01:13 (fourteen years ago) link

his checks = your plaid.

your checks = his ticks.

estela, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 01:18 (fourteen years ago) link

how did i kno this would b bamquern

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Check_(fabric)

plaxico (I know, right?), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 01:20 (fourteen years ago) link

wait that's what plaid is?

plaxico (I know, right?), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 01:20 (fourteen years ago) link

Did you mean: Check (fabric)

bamcquern, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 01:21 (fourteen years ago) link

I don't know what you mean, like, Who responded to my thread, I know it would have to be bamcquern because only HE would respond to my thread about people wearing checks.

bamcquern, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 01:22 (fourteen years ago) link

Of COURSE he would want clarification as to what checks are. Lousy USian.

bamcquern, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 01:22 (fourteen years ago) link

checks are nice. they're just little squares. plaid is different. checks are squares.

oops i accidentally made it personal (surm), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 01:23 (fourteen years ago) link

altho if you want to talk cereal, crispix anyday. but that's not the point :(

oops i accidentally made it personal (surm), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 01:23 (fourteen years ago) link

i dunno, i saw new answer and had a feeling u don't need 2 analyse it too hard

plaxico (I know, right?), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 01:24 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh, yeah, my mom called something checks that looks like tiny plaid to me. They were yellow and black checks, though, and not very attractive.

bamcquern, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 01:24 (fourteen years ago) link

pics or it didnt happen

SMH (ice cr?m), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 01:25 (fourteen years ago) link

i read it (knowing it was you, bam) as a kind of inscrutable compliment. xxxxp

surm (::hugs for today::) is right really but i was trying to give a rough transatlantic translation.

estela, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 01:25 (fourteen years ago) link

I still don't get it, Dupin, but I certainly don't mind it.

bamcquern, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 01:25 (fourteen years ago) link

xpost Yeah, I like plax quite a lot.

bamcquern, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 01:26 (fourteen years ago) link

i do too.

estela, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 01:27 (fourteen years ago) link

<3 both of u guys! i'd ask u 2 join me in the fight against checks but I have like five shirts like this now and I wear everything until it is 2 ragged fashion bedamned so i'm not really fit 2 lead the crusade u no?

plaxico (I know, right?), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 01:31 (fourteen years ago) link

The plaid shirt my mom bought me recently I just love. If I had a bigger budget for clothes then I could dress sophisticated and model for street fashion bloggers.

bamcquern, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 01:32 (fourteen years ago) link

why do these exist?

sarahel, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 01:33 (fourteen years ago) link

Which things are you referring to?

bamcquern, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 01:34 (fourteen years ago) link

street fashion bloggers. Is it just people wanting to see pictures of themselves or people they aspire to be?

sarahel, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 01:35 (fourteen years ago) link

will admit that i like looking @ the sartorialist

plaxico (I know, right?), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 01:38 (fourteen years ago) link

^^ he looks a bit like my soon-to-be-ex when we met.

sarahel, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 01:40 (fourteen years ago) link

not the same guy tho

plaxico (I know, right?), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 01:42 (fourteen years ago) link

Street fashion bloggers are people taking pictures of well-dressed people on the street! It's probably the only thing tangentially to do with the fashion industry that I think is pretty cool, even if I don't follow any regularly.

bamcquern, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 01:42 (fourteen years ago) link

xp - no, my soon-to-be-ex has a lot less hair now.

sarahel, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 01:43 (fourteen years ago) link

unless its just pages and pages of ppl wearing cheap mondays

plaxico (I know, right?), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 01:44 (fourteen years ago) link

but a lot more cheek. xp

i think it's good/refreshing in a way that there is an outlet or avenue for pictures of regular well-dressed people as opposed to high fashion/unattainable models in more traditional magazines. But I think part of the appeal is definitely aspirational in a "it could be me in that picture" sense, and that there's an element of narcissism at play - not that that's necessarily bad.

sarahel, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 01:48 (fourteen years ago) link

I like checks. Have def seen whole group photos in which every person was wearing either a check or a plaid -- kind of the nature of dress shirts, if you're not big on swirly or floral patterns.

WHY DON'T YOU JUST LICK THE BUS DIRECTLY (Laurel), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 01:51 (fourteen years ago) link

xpost Remember when we were talking about the hall of mirrors effect, Sarah? That blog's a perfect example.

I think there are many street fashion blogs that are adorable and unaffected. And even if the blogger participates, and shows (usually) her own outfits, her own narcissism, which is implied, is not necessarily a repellent character trait. Her narcissism, for instance, may be just as healthy (or unhealthy) as my narcissism, even though I don't have a photoblog.

bamcquern, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 01:53 (fourteen years ago) link

Because that guy has to participate more heavily than the people he satirizes/spoofs/insults in order to do what he does.

bamcquern, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 01:54 (fourteen years ago) link

So his hands are not at all clean.

bamcquern, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 01:54 (fourteen years ago) link

Except that's not actually what I meant about hall of mirrors, so I'm off topic.

bamcquern, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 01:54 (fourteen years ago) link

hipster runoff? yeah, that was one of the things i was thinking of in terms of that discussion and layers/folded-ness.

it's about cats.

sarahel, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:03 (fourteen years ago) link

if you mean plaid.. guilty! wearing a plaid scarf right now. i wear a lot of it. idk, i noticed a lot of french fashion bloggers were wearing it starting a year or two ago, and then there's this whole classic americana pendleton workwear revival type thing..

i just happen to like it. my dad was always the well-dressed one in our family, so i've been super fond of menswear fabrics esp tweeds, plaids, houndstooth and pinstripes, ever since grade school.

C MON MAN (daria-g), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:14 (fourteen years ago) link

ok i'm guessing its not as bad in us from ur posts but here every single clothes shop is check-town

plaxico (I know, right?), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:16 (fourteen years ago) link

This stuff looks way hot on women. Makes them look bookish, which drives me up an erotic wall.

plaxico (I know, right?), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:17 (fourteen years ago) link

pinstripes are pretty awesome - vertical ones also are slimming.

sarahel, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:17 (fourteen years ago) link

Okay yeah, I don't get this as an "issue" but I think wearing Ben Sherman every day is perfectly reasonable and I've owned a houndstooth couch, so....

WHY DON'T YOU JUST LICK THE BUS DIRECTLY (Laurel), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:17 (fourteen years ago) link

I xpost because I'm civilized.

Well, "issue" is relative.

bamcquern, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:19 (fourteen years ago) link

the issue is that checks and plaid are fashionable?

sarahel, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:20 (fourteen years ago) link

That they've reached a critical mass in fashionability, as if they're color change shirts in 1992 or something.

bamcquern, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:21 (fourteen years ago) link

there doesn't seem to be as much plaid in us stores, i guess

ok looking around the room here.. madras plaid scarf, grey plaid faux-isabel-marant blouse, buffalo plaid coat (last year, gap), another tiny plaid faux-isabel-marant top, two wool plaid scarves, ll bean plaid flannel shirt from the kids' department, vintage pendleton wool plaid shirt, vintage plaid coat (going to sell that though, i don't wear it), and plaid vest. there's probably more around i didn't look too hard

i like the red & black shirt in the middle.

― sarahel, Wednesday, November 18, 2009 2:24 AM (30 seconds ago)

I own this exact shirt!

plaxico (I know, right?), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:25 (fourteen years ago) link

i just like it, fashionable or not, because it usually comes in excellent colors and is also good for mixing patterns with stripes or tweed. oh i have another vintage wool plaid shirt and a couple more scarves. would like some trousers but finding a flattering pair in a small enough plaid.. too much trouble and money

C MON MAN (daria-g), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:25 (fourteen years ago) link

Ooooohhhh you mean like lumberjack-inspired flannels in various "hard-wearing" plaid colorways?

WHY DON'T YOU JUST LICK THE BUS DIRECTLY (Laurel), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:27 (fourteen years ago) link

The first three are all tolerable in plax's pic, even if I'd probably only wear the blue one, but that photo's funny. Oh oh oh. I was at this dive bar in downtown Orlando watching some nineties style indie band and this girl made a googly face, maybe sort of unintentionally, and I laughed and sort of pointed at her, crooked my elbow I mean, and did so in front of her. My friend Katie overheard her and her friend talking:

"The one in the plaid shirt." (It was the same new plaid shirt I mentioned upthread.)

And Katie and I were later like, We're all wearing plaid shirts.

bamcquern, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:28 (fourteen years ago) link

i have a couple of those! been debating asking my dads to buy me this shirt for christmas if it comes in a small enough size, also it is from small town minnesota mill, which is pretty excellent

C MON MAN (daria-g), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:28 (fourteen years ago) link

Cos that looks like a return to "dad" shirts from LL Bean, if you ask me. Plus a bit of the 70s country-western thing on the left there, with the diagonal and the pointy pocket flaps.

WHY DON'T YOU JUST LICK THE BUS DIRECTLY (Laurel), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:29 (fourteen years ago) link

Yes! u just call them check shirts and its understood here (i think) so i didn't really know what else 2 call them

plaxico (I know, right?), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:30 (fourteen years ago) link

Eh I hate this pattern/style, but I feel like it's so Midwestern it's giving me hives.

WHY DON'T YOU JUST LICK THE BUS DIRECTLY (Laurel), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:30 (fourteen years ago) link

the blue one is ok too - the others are a bit too "contrast-y"

sarahel, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:30 (fourteen years ago) link

i don't care for the country-western or 70's style ones for myself. they're ok on other people just not my style. prefer the grunge ones/"dad" shirts & really love the one i have from ll bean actually, the largest sizes in the boys' department are nice and i think it cost less than $20.

C MON MAN (daria-g), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:31 (fourteen years ago) link

bamcquern, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:34 (fourteen years ago) link

The quality and warm fuzzy factor of a really worn-out LL B shirt is undeniable, but I just can't stomach them anymore as a fashion thing. But then I never liked grunge.

WHY DON'T YOU JUST LICK THE BUS DIRECTLY (Laurel), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:35 (fourteen years ago) link

i liked grunge a lot. i guess current outfit could pretty much be grunge years except i didn't get it from thrifts (striped sweater, plaid scarf, down vest, jeans). could be ready to go to marching band practice

C MON MAN (daria-g), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:39 (fourteen years ago) link

Haha I didn't dress like that when it WAS the early '90s and I was in marching band, but then plaid flannels were never "out" in MI so grunge bringing them back was sort of unnoticeable from the status quo....

WHY DON'T YOU JUST LICK THE BUS DIRECTLY (Laurel), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:42 (fourteen years ago) link
