challenging opinions!

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 13:50 (fifteen years ago) link

i liked his story the other day about andre 3000

max, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 13:58 (fifteen years ago) link

i mean, guy is a pretty good photographer and all but i hardly think he deserves the influence ceded to him by like, the entire blog universe.

also, he was in a print ad for the GAP.

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 13:59 (fifteen years ago) link

max you mean the post he ends like this:

ps. I will make a prediction now that Semi-Pro will clean up at this years Oscars!!
If you haven't seen it yet RUN to buy the DVD - Will Ferrell Rocks!!

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 14:02 (fifteen years ago) link

lolll i know but hes not the moviesalist

max, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 14:04 (fifteen years ago) link

i feel u tho dawg, hes not a very good fashion writer, but hes a good photographer with a good eye for what he likes, and the hate should go toward the fashion bloggers who think hes anna wintour or whatever instead of some dude with a blog

max, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 14:08 (fifteen years ago) link

i think he is a guy with good taste but he is also a guy with expensive taste -- he tends to make a fuss when people wear inexpensive clothing, which makes him sound like a guy totally unaware of the fact that the world is full of cheap clothing, some of which can be worn in a way that doesn't look cheap.

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 14:12 (fifteen years ago) link

also he seems to exclusively photograph strikingly attractive 20 and 30 somethings, eccentric old men, and the occasional androgyne.

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 14:14 (fifteen years ago) link

ya but hating on a fashion photog for having his own specific taste is like... why doesnt karl lagerfeld ever make mumus? you know? the problem, like you said, isnt this goofy metro dude who likes taking pics of ppl who should be models, its the blog nerds who think hes a titan of style

max, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 14:16 (fifteen years ago) link

On the Street....Joakim, Stockholm

Looks like he just stepped off a Prada runway and yet he only paid $6 for this coat.

I think it was a doctors labcoat but because of the color and weight it looked more like something you would buy at APC.

ps if you are wondering he is not a model but i think he should look into the possibilities

i see your point -- i can't help but think that a good part of his popularity comes from readers projecting an aspirational standpoint onto the blog -- what with all the international travel, the exclusive shops, the crowds outside of runway shows, the bespoke suits.

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 14:21 (fifteen years ago) link

oh yeah for sure!! i mean who wouldnt like to take pictures of hot swedish girls all the time? especially cause you never even see the dude, so you can really project yourself in his shoes, taking these pics, jetsetting and shit... especially cause hes into a 'classical' style that translates well to people who have a lot of difft tastes... i mean i think the real criticism might be that his taste is sort of boring and not particularly unique...

max, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 14:24 (fifteen years ago) link

the specifics of what he likes is usually like... expensive, good use of colors, italian

max, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 14:25 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah but that's a lot of what I like, too. I can't look anymore at the blogs with no filter, the ones that're a flat record of what people wear without critical taste imposed. And I really am not interested in "my fashion inspirations are hamsters and my grandma and American hair metal. I think teal is going to be the next big thing".

I'm not hip to the blogosphere but in fashion I want polish, polish, polish to aspire to, and it's SO hard to find online.

Laurel, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 14:29 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah laurel--and i mean this in the best possible way, speaking as someone who likes most of what he puts on his blog--you are sort of the ideal sartorialist reader

max, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 14:31 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh yeah totally! Although I don't really read any fashion thingies and I only remember sartorialist when someone revives the street fashion thread. :)

Laurel, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 14:35 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, basically what Laurel says: the appeal of the thing is that there are a million streety fashion blogs where all of the men are wearing skinny black jeans and crazy neon print shirts or otherwise looking 20-something hipstery, and basically ONE well-known one that takes any kind of interest in traditional menswear looking particularly ... well, yes, all tailored and expensive, but also elegant and detailed and whatnot.

He is kinda gaming this by shooting people as if they're on the street and then of course they all turn out to be fashion-industry people he's going to meet for other purposes in the first place, but still: show me any other simple, straightforward blog that's not some sort of ad-heavy arm of a magazine website that features varied images of nice traditional menswear suitable for the aspirations of those who have college graduates for longer than they were in college in the first place

nabisco, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 20:29 (fifteen years ago) link

i think this guy is pretty cool but im a neophyte who only wears american apparel tees

i prefer this type of photo-journalism/blogging w/e where ppls clothing are presented w/o a stylist and w/o a price tag and w/o a TURN TO PAGE 465 TO FIND OUT WHERE TO BUY THIS $4,000 SWEATER caveat

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 20 August 2008 20:33 (fifteen years ago) link

and though i know most of these people can afford nicer clothes than me or are more resourceful, its much easier to find inspiration/ideas in this stuff than in mags, and i think this guy has pretty good taste

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 20 August 2008 20:35 (fifteen years ago) link

and though i know most of these people can afford nicer clothes than me

i mean this because i assume most of them have jobs and are not in school

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 20 August 2008 20:35 (fifteen years ago) link

His taste is pretty homogenous – I quit looking at it after a few months. How many grey coats or subtle color combinations do I really need to see? Not THAT many.

Abbott, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 20:56 (fifteen years ago) link

Says the girl who only wears brown and grey? :)

Laurel, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 20:58 (fifteen years ago) link

too many blazer/shorts combos

ice crӕm, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 21:04 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah along the same lines as abbott - i like sartorialist but havent looked at it in a really really long time, only when people post a pic somewhere - most of it's classy but also can be trying too hard. and if he does post something colourful he's always omg colours done right! kudos! and i'm like whatever. i don't know if it's still this way. i like colours! and weirdness!

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 21:11 (fifteen years ago) link

ok looking at it i like that some things he posts are weird but not nec in the good-weird way

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 21:21 (fifteen years ago) link

Only my pants are all brown and grey! And my jackets. I have many ridic shirts. Paisleys bro.

Abbott, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 21:28 (fifteen years ago) link

I cld not get on Sartorialist, unless he happened to find my dog handsome.

Abbott, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 21:29 (fifteen years ago) link

the times i have checked the sartorialist I have noticed that he does post pics of people wearing lowend gap/h&m things. but they do look great on the people. I just like him because he doesn't post pic upon pic of japanese fruits shit.

Yerac, Thursday, 21 August 2008 01:19 (fifteen years ago) link

hey guys thank you all for posting but youll notice that elmo and i worked this out upthread this morning so dont worry about it

max, Thursday, 21 August 2008 01:33 (fifteen years ago) link

as far as I remember, a few years ago, he was the first one to do a blog of streetstyle photos. yes? nobody in fashion knew who he was. these days .. he finds people who are stunning but there are so many fashion people in it now, and I just.. I don't think it's so hard to look really good if you are wearing a lanvin dress and $2000 shoes.

I love menswear and maybe have learned a few things from what he's written about it. another thing I appreciate is that since he was at the start of the fashion-blog thing, maybe he had an influence in the tone.. all the fashion blogs I read that have actual writing to go with the photos, they're actually pretty friendly and supportive of each other, total opposite of the critical & bitchy stuff one might expect.

daria-g, Thursday, 21 August 2008 03:27 (fifteen years ago) link

so I'm not gonna say the sartorialist isn't worth looking at, but ultimately i think his prominence simply comes from his being the first dude to execute the street-fashion blog format successfully, but as he's garnered more and more acclaim its kinda obvious that the sense of spontaneity and discovery have dulled once it turned into a fashion industry lookbook.

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:05 (fifteen years ago) link

that's a run on sentence for you. phew.

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:06 (fifteen years ago) link

also his pictures aren't just snaps, they're usually really great what with the light and depth of field - i appreciate that

I'm not gonna say the sartorialist isn't worth looking at, but ultimately i think his prominence simply comes from his being the first dude to execute the street-fashion blog format successfull

It also helped that he was the director of men's fashion at bergdorfs...

phil-two, Friday, 29 August 2008 08:06 (fifteen years ago) link

never seen the sartorialist until this thread...

pretty hot stuff

strgn, Friday, 29 August 2008 08:10 (fifteen years ago) link

THAT was a snap judgment

catorialist has nothing on meowmaduke mittenstein III and paws, poise, etc.

strgn, Friday, 29 August 2008 08:13 (fifteen years ago) link

i left fat out, and transmigratory fur, with that etc.

love it when he takes a picture of a dude wearing flannel or like a t-shirt and half an hour later there are like 70 posts from ppl complaining

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Thursday, 4 June 2009 14:39 (fourteen years ago) link

it's all "fantastic use of color but if the look would be better if the jacket was knee-length and the shoes were patent leather instead of suede" like being pictured on a style blog means you would have unlimited access to millions of imaginary clothes I just thought up

roman knockwell (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 4 June 2009 15:05 (fourteen years ago) link

why criticize a person for not having a pink seersucker necktie or some nonsense, basically

roman knockwell (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 4 June 2009 15:09 (fourteen years ago) link

why not imo

can't believe this guy is not a gay.
