Surmounter, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:21 (fifteen years ago) link

i hate the pants-swallowing-the-shoe look when the pants in question are tight flares, like in that original photo. with wide-legged, high-waisted jeans/trousers, it's not as bad.

lauren, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:22 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah me neither so much, but damn i love that Margiela coat... i like the first lady though. xp

phil-two, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:22 (fifteen years ago) link

also, at this point, i hate jeans with heels (not heeled boots, mind you). hate hate hate.

xp yeah, margiela coat - swoon.

lauren, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:22 (fifteen years ago) link

Boyfriend jeans. Yeah. I guess it's the california cuffing that really has me baffled. Middle school flashbacks etc.

also, at this point, i hate jeans with heels (not heeled boots, mind you). hate hate hate.

^^ Me too.

ENBB, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:24 (fifteen years ago) link

really! i love it a LOT

Surmounter, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:25 (fifteen years ago) link

i think it looks hella trashy.

lauren, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:25 (fifteen years ago) link

(and not the good kind of trashy.)

lauren, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:25 (fifteen years ago) link

1: Mme Agnes in Proenza Schouler. 2. I think the market editor for vogue? 3. model, but i think she could be wearing a goatse shirt and a tutu and still look good

phil-two, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:26 (fifteen years ago) link

oops, sorry theyre so big. how to limit size on ilx?

phil-two, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:26 (fifteen years ago) link

hott

Surmounter, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:27 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, exactly, Lauren. I like wide-legged pants in the '30s-40s movie way with a higher waist, very Coco/Garbo. (Almost a palazzo pant without looking like you used a whole drawing room curtain to for each leg.)

Laurel, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:28 (fifteen years ago) link

i love christina's look but wtf is streaming off her purse

Surmounter, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:29 (fifteen years ago) link

ugh, christina ag. always looks so greasy.

lauren, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:30 (fifteen years ago) link

Sur I just think she's so tacky. I'm sorry. I also can't handle the make-up.

ENBB, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:31 (fifteen years ago) link

gwen stefani pulls it off much better (though i still think she wears too much too)

tehresa, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:31 (fifteen years ago) link

haha don't apologize! as i think we're all aware, i'm on the other side of the tacky fence :D

Surmounter, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:32 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, as long as the gloves are off... gah, she is SO tacky! she's like the cheap stripper version of the 40s pin-up girl.

xp - and we love you for it, of course

lauren, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:32 (fifteen years ago) link

I ALMOST like so many things about that -- the lipstick with the gloss of an auto-body wax, the red heels, the hair all in pieces -- but somehow she just looks like she tried and failed, to me. Would like her jeans better if they were shorter, ankle-bone length.

of the '40s pin-up girl
Exactly.

Laurel, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:33 (fifteen years ago) link

I mean I have Petty Girl checks, for pete's sake. Trashy blonde up there is not measuring up.

Laurel, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:35 (fifteen years ago) link

The ScarJo photo that everyone hated with the really high jeans and the black tank top was SO much better.

Laurel, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:36 (fifteen years ago) link

You love those jeans so much!!! :-)

ENBB, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:36 (fifteen years ago) link

i don't remember this photo!

Surmounter, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:37 (fifteen years ago) link

I could never never wear them cos I don't like having things around my waist. Also high-waisted jeans are so not the answer to sitting at a desk all day with the tummy bunched up. But I like that photo of her and I thought the disapproval when it came out was terribly unfair. :)

Laurel, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:37 (fifteen years ago) link

The ScarJo photo that everyone hated with the really high jeans and the black tank top was SO much better.
oh yeah, from the imitation of christ show? that was not so good

phil-two, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:38 (fifteen years ago) link

that's fucking hot

Surmounter, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:39 (fifteen years ago) link

x-post

I can't remember what it was for but I think she was modeling. Maybe Imitation of Christ or something like that? I just know that I've seen Laurel post about that pic/those jeans a bunch of times before. They're like her holy grail jeans.

ENBB, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:39 (fifteen years ago) link

hmmmm.

tehresa, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:40 (fifteen years ago) link

I think that they look good on her and she looks awesome there but I could never wear anything like that. I'd look ridic.

ENBB, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:40 (fifteen years ago) link

thx for posting that!

Surmounter, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:41 (fifteen years ago) link

(the pic)

Surmounter, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:41 (fifteen years ago) link

Yes! Phil beat me to it -- like I said, I couldn't wear them either, but that's about the only way I like jeans with heels.

Laurel, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:41 (fifteen years ago) link

i think the cigarette is kind of what makes the pic even moar laurel-y!

tehresa, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:42 (fifteen years ago) link

so perfect!

Surmounter, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:42 (fifteen years ago) link

Wait, AND she's smoking? Oh shit etc. Haha.

Laurel, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:44 (fifteen years ago) link

I do actually have a pair of pointy red '50s stilettos and I have been known to wear them with very tapered ankle-length jeans. Mostly to like garage rock shows, though. Guilty as charged.

Laurel, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:45 (fifteen years ago) link

my friend's reaction to that look --
friend: that takes a certain kind of woman
but it is gorgeous

Surmounter, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:46 (fifteen years ago) link

Ha, weird, I totally accept the shoe-swallowing on those proper trousers, but there is still a tiny part of my brain that has guy standards and is confused by the lack of feet/shoes and wonders about ease of walking and generally associates shoe-swallowing with

As for the ScarJo 50s-style high-waist tapered-leg heels thing, I know not many people are going to have the body type and inclinations to really pull that off, but I hope that fact will encourage those who can to run with it.

nabisco, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:55 (fifteen years ago) link

i am just checking in to say, Surmounter, i am on the same side of the tacky fence as you.

horseshoe, Friday, 8 August 2008 19:22 (fifteen years ago) link

whoah, what happened there? "generally associates shoe-swallowing with ... sloppy teenage boys and ravers," was most of what I was going to say, I think

nabisco, Friday, 8 August 2008 19:32 (fifteen years ago) link

whew, horseshoe, i'm glad i'm not alone :D

Surmounter, Friday, 8 August 2008 20:31 (fifteen years ago) link

surmounter + horseshoe = horsemounter

nabisco, Friday, 8 August 2008 20:53 (fifteen years ago) link

Will have to add that to the vocabulary thread. HORSEMOUNTER (adj.): things that look nice but a bit more "fabulous" than Laurel or Lauren would be likely to enjoy

nabisco, Friday, 8 August 2008 20:55 (fifteen years ago) link

:D

i'm sorry, i just love it so much: http://www.dlisted.com/node/27714/images/spl43975_003.jpg

those jeans are busted seamed with selvage which is more often than not very $$$.

the finish is atrocious though, esp. the way the outseam is totally ribboned up. total no-no.
