I don't care for it on jeans, especially when the jeans fit up top not in a trousery way, but in a low/tight regular-jeans way. But maybe I just associate it too much with over-made-up women standing outside downtown bars on Saturday nights, or whatever.
― nabisco, Friday, 8 August 2008 17:56 (fifteen years ago) link
i agree, if you have a trouser leg, you should have a more normal waist. honestly, i don't think anyone should be wearing the low low waist muffin top butt crack thong showing shit, and that's not just bc i can't pull it off.
― tehresa, Friday, 8 August 2008 17:58 (fifteen years ago) link
It's a very fashionista look, and therefore much copied by the weekend crowd. Unfort for the weekenders, the original fashion-plate wearers are more like the woman who crowed about being too small for the clothes at Jil Sander: People who think a 6 is time to go on a diet.
― Laurel, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:05 (fifteen years ago) link
i like the look -- and the bag in that photo!
― Surmounter, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:06 (fifteen years ago) link
I don't like when the whole show is swallowed very much either but I love wide-leg trouser style jeans in general. I want that bag soooo much.
I am so confused by Katies jeans. Is this going to become a thing? I don't know if I'm ok with that.
― ENBB, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:08 (fifteen years ago) link
i actually like a tight pant that swallows a lot of the shoe. is that outlandish?
― Surmounter, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:10 (fifteen years ago) link
Honestly I think the safest way to wear wide-legged pants is with flats. I can imagine lots of good versions of pants with heels but there's always the risk crossing the line into what Nabisco is talking about. If you're not sure or you're chubby and happy about it or etc, safest is go to with nice pointy low shoes that will peep out but not make you look like you're disguising another 4 inches of height under there.
Also I have several times caught a heel in deep trouser cuffs, once resulting in my falling down the PATH stairs at Grove Street. No thanks! Not after last time!

i would like the bag w/out that fringe
― tehresa, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:12 (fifteen years ago) link
UGH i know, so true. those royal blue leather bags have been making the rounds in the last few years.
― Surmounter, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:13 (fifteen years ago) link
i keep seeing lots of awesome bags but there will be one or two details, like random bits of fringe or a chain hanging off, that are deal-breakers for me.
― tehresa, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:14 (fifteen years ago) link
That happens to me all the time with shoes, too! Being picky keeps my expenditures down, though. Phew.
― Laurel, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:15 (fifteen years ago) link
oh, yeah i got a whole slew of these kinds of jeans in photos at Paris fashion week in feb 08...

although gucci has been doing this thing with like one big dramatic tassle off the end? which i actually love
― Surmounter, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:16 (fifteen years ago) link
Honestly I think the safest way to wear wide-legged pants is with flats.
^^^
Yes. I've only ever worn mine with flats. Also the pants in question are proper trouser style up top too. None of that "low waist muffin top butt crack thong showing shit." Yuck.
― ENBB, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:16 (fifteen years ago) link
Flats or let's say, a nice 1-2" wedge heel like an espadrille. But obv that's way more summery, not for the whole tight-tight-tight-FLARED thing like Ms Blue Bag up there.
― Laurel, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:18 (fifteen years ago) link
i dunno, i always feel sexy w/ a trouser leg and heels/heeled boots. i find that w/ flats, you have to hem them, and they lose some of the cool shape created by the trouser leg.
― tehresa, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:18 (fifteen years ago) link
re: the katie photo: i think that's an example of the "boyfriend" jean.
― lauren, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:20 (fifteen years ago) link
ftr i do not like how the lady in phil's 2nd pic is wearing those jeans.
― tehresa, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:21 (fifteen years ago) link
haa yes and i love her for it xp
― Surmounter, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:21 (fifteen years ago) link
i hate the pants-swallowing-the-shoe look when the pants in question are tight flares, like in that original photo. with wide-legged, high-waisted jeans/trousers, it's not as bad.
― lauren, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:22 (fifteen years ago) link
yeah me neither so much, but damn i love that Margiela coat... i like the first lady though. xp
― phil-two, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:22 (fifteen years ago) link
also, at this point, i hate jeans with heels (not heeled boots, mind you). hate hate hate.
xp yeah, margiela coat - swoon.
Boyfriend jeans. Yeah. I guess it's the california cuffing that really has me baffled. Middle school flashbacks etc.
^^ Me too.
― ENBB, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:24 (fifteen years ago) link
really! i love it a LOT

i think it looks hella trashy.
― lauren, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:25 (fifteen years ago) link
(and not the good kind of trashy.)
here are some i liked though:

1: Mme Agnes in Proenza Schouler. 2. I think the market editor for vogue? 3. model, but i think she could be wearing a goatse shirt and a tutu and still look good

hott
Yeah, exactly, Lauren. I like wide-legged pants in the '30s-40s movie way with a higher waist, very Coco/Garbo. (Almost a palazzo pant without looking like you used a whole drawing room curtain to for each leg.)

ugh, christina ag. always looks so greasy.
― lauren, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:30 (fifteen years ago) link
Sur I just think she's so tacky. I'm sorry. I also can't handle the make-up.
― ENBB, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:31 (fifteen years ago) link
gwen stefani pulls it off much better (though i still think she wears too much too)
― tehresa, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:31 (fifteen years ago) link
haha don't apologize! as i think we're all aware, i'm on the other side of the tacky fence :D
― Surmounter, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:32 (fifteen years ago) link
yeah, as long as the gloves are off... gah, she is SO tacky! she's like the cheap stripper version of the 40s pin-up girl.
xp - and we love you for it, of course
― lauren, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:32 (fifteen years ago) link
I ALMOST like so many things about that -- the lipstick with the gloss of an auto-body wax, the red heels, the hair all in pieces -- but somehow she just looks like she tried and failed, to me. Would like her jeans better if they were shorter, ankle-bone length.
of the '40s pin-up girl Exactly.

I mean I have Petty Girl checks, for pete's sake. Trashy blonde up there is not measuring up.

The ScarJo photo that everyone hated with the really high jeans and the black tank top was SO much better.
― Laurel, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:36 (fifteen years ago) link
You love those jeans so much!!! :-)
― ENBB, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:36 (fifteen years ago) link
i don't remember this photo!
― Surmounter, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:37 (fifteen years ago) link
I could never never wear them cos I don't like having things around my waist. Also high-waisted jeans are so not the answer to sitting at a desk all day with the tummy bunched up. But I like that photo of her and I thought the disapproval when it came out was terribly unfair. :)
― Laurel, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:37 (fifteen years ago) link
The ScarJo photo that everyone hated with the really high jeans and the black tank top was SO much better. oh yeah, from the imitation of christ show? that was not so good

x-post
I can't remember what it was for but I think she was modeling. Maybe Imitation of Christ or something like that? I just know that I've seen Laurel post about that pic/those jeans a bunch of times before. They're like her holy grail jeans.
― ENBB, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:39 (fifteen years ago) link
hmmmm.
― tehresa, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:40 (fifteen years ago) link
I think that they look good on her and she looks awesome there but I could never wear anything like that. I'd look ridic.
