Torn between F&B, Starla, & Obscured

Drugs A. Money, Monday, 21 April 2014 12:11 (ten years ago) link

Gotta go with "Starla." We should prob have a big SP ballot poll at some point.

posi riot (some dude), Monday, 21 April 2014 12:22 (ten years ago) link

Agree 100%. A great album on par with Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie. Highlights: Frail & Bedazzled, Obscured, Landslide, Whir, Starla. Heck, the whole thing is awesome.

Will go with Obscured because I've voted Landslide on other polls.

LimbsKing, Monday, 21 April 2014 15:05 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, this is such a great record. I love so many of these songs. Today I'm feeling like "Starla" is the right choice.

Obscured is my favorite.

smhphony orchestra (crüt), Monday, 21 April 2014 15:19 (ten years ago) link

I really like the concise melodic riff-rockers on this: "Frail and Bedazzled", "Plume", "Pissant", "Hello Kitty Kat". This is probably "Frail and Bedazzled". Love those guitar tones.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 21 April 2014 15:21 (ten years ago) link

The chorus of HKK is infectious though.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 21 April 2014 15:21 (ten years ago) link

Starla seemed like the most epic thing to me when I first heard it, feel like they never bettered it.

Me too. I was 13 at the time.

LimbsKing, Monday, 21 April 2014 17:59 (ten years ago) link

What the hell was wrong with me, "my boredom has outshined the sun" was my senior quote in HS

great album though.

Hello Kitty Kat. That opening drum fill always makes me wonder "Did I just play the Spin Doctors?" and then it's WHAM!

I also love the bit starting @3:50

Sufjan Cougar Mellencamp (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 22 April 2014 01:37 (ten years ago) link

Oh yeah, I like that guitar outro a lot too. I think that's the way I'm voting.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 22 April 2014 02:03 (ten years ago) link

That ending solo actually reminds me of 70s Aerosmith in a weird way.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 22 April 2014 02:04 (ten years ago) link

oh man, i love that part so much.

brimstead, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 02:23 (ten years ago) link

Frail and Bedazzled and Hello Kitty Kat are definitive 90s guitar jams for me

Drugs A. Money, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 03:23 (ten years ago) link

From Frail and Bedazzled to Pissant its just a really cool varied well-sequenced rock record, and then HKK into Obscured into Landslide into Starla is just next level...

Drugs A. Money, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 03:26 (ten years ago) link

70s Aerosmith also had a song called "Spaced" iirc

smhphony orchestra (crüt), Tuesday, 22 April 2014 03:26 (ten years ago) link

(tho tbh I might vote Spaced cuz its a cool ending and I want it to get a vote)

Lol xp

Drugs A. Money, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 03:28 (ten years ago) link

I had a favorite purple t-shirt with the Starla lyrics on the back, purchased at the Rehoboth Beach, Delaware boardwalk. Still have it, actually. And Plume was one of the first songs I ever learned to play on guitar. I learned guitar playing butchered, totally wrong versions of early Pumpkins songs.

But Pissant's opening -

Got me a ray gun / got me an altitude / can't help thinking something's wrong with EVERY ONE OF YOU

And then!

Come on honey / Let's go for a ride / Down where the crickets learn to sing and play / bay - bee

When it explodes back in!!!

Walter Galt, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 11:21 (ten years ago) link

Like Incesticide, this works as an album as much as it does as a compilation. I like the way each side opens with a solo acoustic song.

It's what I voted for. Love the liner notes about it being recorded in a motel or something

And I think you can hear cars go by outside if you listen real close.

Man, those were some intense liner notes. Single-spaced block typewriter sheets.

LimbsKing, Wednesday, 23 April 2014 11:15 (ten years ago) link

It's a bus! (as per the liner notes)

This comp was what cemented my full-blown Pumpkins obsession that started in 1994 and didn't really let up until the break-up in 2000.

Voting 'Whir' over 'Obscured' and 'Blew Away' but there's so much good stuff here. Can't be doing with the Fleetwood Mac cover though.

Gavin, Leeds, Thursday, 24 April 2014 09:52 (ten years ago) link

I knew it before the Mac version and always loved it.

1 pONO 3v3Ry+h1n G!!!1 (dog latin), Thursday, 24 April 2014 10:27 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, Mac and BOC were the first classic rock bands not featured in SPIN's big orange book that I kinda came back around on, and Landslide was a big part of that process for the former

Drugs A. Money, Thursday, 24 April 2014 11:40 (ten years ago) link

I also heard the Pumpkins' cover of "Never Let Me Down" ("Rocket" single b-side) before the Depeche Mode version. Like DM's (slightly) more, though.

Obscured vs Whir for me and I can't choose between them. Ok, Obscured.

Such a great album. Definitely my fave but closely followed by Siamese Dream.

I don't know if the time frame even works out, but whenever I pull this album out I always wish that "Drown" from the Singles soundtrack was on here.

Non-Stop Erotic Calculus (bmus), Tuesday, 26 August 2014 22:21 (nine years ago) link

Drown is from '92, Pisces is from '94 iirc. So theoretically they could have put it on here, same with the wonderful Glynis.

Haven't a clue what to vote here, love this album so much.

ambient yacht god (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 26 August 2014 22:39 (nine years ago) link

"Plume" is really, really excellent, great lyrics "My boredom has outshined the sun"

i also enjoy in line skateing (spazzmatazz), Tuesday, 26 August 2014 23:27 (nine years ago) link

Man, not sure what to vote here, but Frail and Bedazzled is such a perfect fucking song

ambient yacht god (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 26 August 2014 23:42 (nine years ago) link

I can't find it but I remember reading somewhere that Drown had been around since the Gish sessions but the band (well, Corgan) didn't really feel like it fitted with the other songs in this record so they shelved it for a b-side.

So, the story goes that the song was originally supposed to be released as the b-side for Rhinoceros (they ended up using album cut, Siva, instead) but the Singles film got in the way. The film is pretty much a promotional tool for the grunge scene, so someone on the label thought Drown was too good of as song to be wasted on a b-side (which actually is) and decided to waste it to promote the band on the soundtrack instead. I assume the movie wasn't really memorable because asides from the soundtrack noone ever recommends it, but the soundtrack itself was a best-seller at the time so, good job, label guy.

Some of my factoids might be incorrect but that's pretty much the gist of it. The wikipedia article doesn't have any info on this and I can't find the interview/article where I read it.

TLDR: Drown could be considered a Gish cut, not a Siamese Dream one.

Moka, Wednesday, 27 August 2014 06:35 (nine years ago) link

iirc "starla" is also gish era

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 27 August 2014 06:38 (nine years ago) link

Yes, both are Gish-era, but both were written after Gish was recorded, so it wasn't in consideration for the record. Definitely both feel very much in between Gish and Siamese, they're the bridge between the two. The production on both is more Siamese, but Corgan's singing and his solo wankery are way more Gish.

i also enjoy in line skateing (spazzmatazz), Wednesday, 27 August 2014 06:44 (nine years ago) link

but both were written after Gish was recorded

ah this is what i suspected

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 27 August 2014 06:45 (nine years ago) link

The 8 minute version (with extra solo wankery!) was included on the 2011 Deluxe edition of Gish so I'm gonna count it as a Gish song rather than a Siamese one.

But yes, you're right it sounds like a bridge between both albums and that's why it's excellent. It kind of has the best from both worlds, some of Gish's amazing texture and dynamics but more of the 'alt-rockness' and production of Siamese Dream.

Moka, Wednesday, 27 August 2014 06:56 (nine years ago) link

A Girl Named Sandoz

Went for the cover, although half a dozen of these are keepers. The song forces him to be not so weedy with the vocals and I enjoy that novelty.

they should've just released this as the proper follow-up to siamese dream, it's basically just as good, and the whole 'no promotion, it's an odds and sods thing' devalues it
