where to start, where to start?

The two albums with Tom Cora are pretty great, and DIZZY SPELLS is a recent high point.

doug (doug), Thursday, 17 October 2002 05:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't know enough to really comment, but I thought Dizzy Spells was underrated. Definitely one of the best rock albums I heard last year.

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 17 October 2002 05:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Scrabbling at the Lock is REALLY good...best place to start. Problem is that the rest doesn't hold up as much after you get really into Scrabbling. Check out the Dog Faced Hermans, too.

chip, Thursday, 17 October 2002 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Personally, I prefer the newer stuff like Dizzy Spells and Starters Alternators to the older stuff, even Scrabbling At The Lock. The production on the newer records is much more immediate. Plus that "King Commie" is just bad. The recent Een Rondje Holland is fantastic, if you can find it... it's the Ex playing with a small orchestra that sort of staggers like a drunken marching band. It takes the Ex to pretty ridiculous sensory-overload levels.

my faves are "dignity of labour" and "joggers and smugglers"... the recent touch and go stuff is pretty great but the older stuff i find to be more inspiring and amazing considering when they were made and stuff. their collaboration with tortoise was good. the ex orkestra stuff charlie va mentioned is good as well. i like the sonic youth collaboration so far.

My only problem with the recent stuff (i.e. starters/alternators and dizzy spells) is that they start off great then run a little long. I never end up listening the the whole albums. That Ein Rondje Holland sounds good, though. I'll try to find it. Didn't know about any sonic youth collaborations.

SEE
THEM
LIVE

Never been blown away by the records, but the live shows left me in rapture.

Bonus search: "Rararap/Contempt" 7"

Didn't know about any sonic youth collaborations

it's one of those "in the fishtank" things... it's members of sonic youth, icp, and the ex... icp = instant composers pool... NOT insane clown posse... although, that would be something, wouldn't it?

Chip: I should've mentioned that Een Rondje Holland is actually credited to Ex Orkest (as MSP sorta implied). I don't know, that might make a difference if you're looking for it online or something.

charlie va, Thursday, 17 October 2002 20:43 (twenty-three years ago)

thanks, charlie.

Agree that _Scrabbling at the Lock_ is fantastic, though _Starters Alternators_ arguably rocks harder. _Een Rondje Holland_ is also fantastically good.

My single favorite record by them is, um, a single, the long-out-of-print "Stonestamper's Song." There's also a single version of their Muzikas cover "Hidegen Fujnak a Szelek" that's really great.

Chip mentioned their sister band, Dog Faced Hermans (they shared a guitarist & occasionally recorded together)--any chance to mention them is fine with me--they were the best live rock band I've ever seen, I think. I miss them terribly. These days, Marian Coutts is a sculptor in London, & doing pretty well for herself...

Douglas, Friday, 18 October 2002 03:14 (twenty-three years ago)

my ex and i saw them open for fugazi a few years back. she leaned over at one point and said: "every song sounds like 'in a big country'."

sometimes i wonder if the fact that we're not together anymore is a coincidence.

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 18 October 2002 03:18 (twenty-three years ago)

"In a Big Country". Ummmmmmmmmmm...

To second the D-Bitch's comments, SEE THEM LIVE! I've caught 'em 2.5 times - .5ish during that Fugazi tour (darn girlfriend dragged her feet & our posse only caught the last 2 songs; man, I was irked), once @ the Knitting Factory w/ Don Caballero opening (I think it was the same tour - they played the same set!) , and (the best best best!) once @ the Middle East w/ Fat Day while touring behind _Dizzy Spells_.

The Cora albums are great (start w/ _Scrabbling..._), the Touch & Go albums are great (start w/ _Dizzy Spells_, tho "Bee Cuz" off of _Starters Alternators_ is probably my fave Ex song), the Ex Orkest is great (and it's a nice Ex primer, as it features Wagnerian interpretations of songs from _Scrabbling..._ and _Dizzy Spells_), Dog Faced Hermans are especially faboo (a collection of their first two releases was just reissued by Loveletter Records - hit up Insound & like-minded outlets, or bug the label), and I would like to add to the pigpile by trumpeting the joys of the first Ex record I heard, _Instant_. It's not a typical Ex record - according to the back of the set (2 CDs), it features "impro-dubbed recordings" by the Ex w/ various guests (including Han Bennink, the only name on the back I recognize). Mostly instrumental stuff, not much G.W. Sok involved at all, but it's (yeah) great.

Essentially, what you'll want to do is clear some space in your collection somewhere between The Embarrassment and The Fall for about 15-20 soon-to-be cherished CDs. Or vinyl, if you swing that way, baby.

Everyone I know that's seen them live says it's one of the best shows they've ever seen. The only other act I can say this about is Prince.

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 18 October 2002 04:36 (twenty-three years ago)

alright, time for some "counterweight"... i saw them live once, june 2001, opening for Sonic Youth. i don't know if that had anything to do with it or that they just wanted to try something else (musically) but it was horrible, brrrrrr. the worst concert i've seen in my life. they seemed to have fun though... i remember thinking "they play the same 20-minute pattern (song is not the right word) 4 times" trying to do something 'naive' or something like that, just pulling guitar strings, pushing them with a spoon (yawn)... it was terrible.

willem (willem), Friday, 18 October 2002 05:50 (twenty-three years ago)

huh, willem, that doesn't sound like the ex i know and love, but maybe they were having an experimental night.

they are an incredible live band - they got an encore opening for Unwound last tine they came through.

One of the only better live rock band I can think of, in fact, was the Dog Faced Hermans.

ten months pass...
Does anyone know what happened to the Ex website? I think most of their music was still available direct from Ex Records, but alas, the site seems to be no longer. Anywhere else I can track down the non-T&G Ex?

scott m (mcd), Friday, 5 September 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i was thinking of seeing them tonight.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 5 September 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

weird... where is their site now? what a crappy time for them to lose their website! they're on tour! so far the only tour dates i've seen are mostly northeast (besides chicago)...

i wish they were coming further south....

msp, Friday, 5 September 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm, well, I've only heard Mudbird Shivers. It was pretty good though. No one else has even mentioned this album - is it considered inferior? Is their other stuff very different?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 5 September 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw them in Paris and they were terrific. Go for it Amateurist!

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 5 September 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

The Ex is still the best live band I've seen. Ever. I was gravely disappointed that they were playing two dates in Chicago (one with Erase Errata) and not here, in Minneapolis.

The double-disc "Joggers & Smoggers" is a good place to start. I also really like "Tumult".

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Friday, 5 September 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the stuff they did with Tom Cora, specially Scrabbling at the Lock.

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 5 September 2003 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

seven years pass...

'catch my shoe' still tight.

j., Tuesday, 28 December 2010 19:10 (fifteen years ago)

"Cold Weather is Back" has been on repeat throughout the year.

Simon H., Tuesday, 28 December 2010 21:19 (fifteen years ago)

Excited for tour next spring.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 28 December 2010 21:32 (fifteen years ago)

three years pass...

Saw them last night on their 34 2/5 year anniversary mini-tour. Playing with Chocolat Billy (who were an awesome primal no wave monster), Thurston Moore (who was great. played one (new) song (Detonation) and followed that up by mangling his guitar like he does. invited Terrie Ex to play along for the final minutes of his set), Han Bennink (who was Han Bennink) and Fendika (whom I did not see). The Ex themselves were fantastic, Arnold is a great singer whose guitar playing and singing gives their material a bit of an melancholic edge without sacrificing the impact.

lol, reading upthread makes me want to SB my 2002-self
