I would definitely vote in a Kylie poll.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 19 January 2017 16:25 (seven years ago) link

I feel like the commentary around the fifteen-year poll idea was that it would basically be impossible to make a meaningful ballot with that much stuff on the table - as tempting as a "all music released since ILM existed" poll might seem, conceptually. Whereas the five-year things, though still overbroad, do hypothetically suggest taking stock of the recent past in what might be a SLIGHTLY more coherent fashion - some kind of 'era' at stake.

I disagree. It would mean you really were picking the cream of what was released.

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 19 January 2017 16:29 (seven years ago) link

It would be much fresher to just have a 2010-14 poll. If we did a 2000-14 one we'd be just going over the same albums again (Sound Of Silver, Kid A, Silent Shout, Discovery etc). Also, Bee just did all those 00s polls recently which already gave away how the results might look. Doing a poll for those first five years of the decade gives other albums a chance to shine.

Really though, I just want to see what will happen if Kaputt wins.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 19 January 2017 16:47 (seven years ago) link

wasn't that why some posters didn't want a poll? lol

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 19 January 2017 17:16 (seven years ago) link

i'm on team 2010-2014

example (crüt), Thursday, 19 January 2017 17:17 (seven years ago) link

My view on a lifetime of ILM poll was simply that
a)companion to metal poll
b)most ilxors weren't posting in those early days

but it doesnt really matter does it?

I'll do a lifetime poll but if someone else would rather do a 2010-14 poll they can volunteer and I'll step aside no probs

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 19 January 2017 17:18 (seven years ago) link

crut its your poll if you want it

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 19 January 2017 17:31 (seven years ago) link

Would be curious to see an artists poll. Though I see an almighty clusterfuck deciding what constitutes an artist. Would Spector/Timbaland be eligible? Would you seperate acts who owe most of their success to one member, Wham!/George Michael, Rod Stewart/Faces etc?

Some Of The Greatest Artists Ever Are Banned: An ILX Poll

stein beck ii: the wrath of grapes (Doctor Casino), Thursday, 19 January 2017 18:08 (seven years ago) link

Sort of intrigued by the artists poll idea. What constitutes an artist seems a bigger problem than it really is. A month long nominations thread would clear the air.

two weeks pass...

time to get this thing rolling again. is anyone ready to run a poll?

i will do Talking Heads and can go second for this year, just can't start it right now.

Bee OK, Friday, 3 February 2017 20:04 (seven years ago) link

Is there a limit to number of Fela songs we can vote for?

― quan voice (voodoo chili), Tuesday, February 10, 2015

A Fela poll would be nice!

Fastnbulbous, Saturday, 4 February 2017 17:34 (seven years ago) link

anyone?

Bee OK, Thursday, 9 February 2017 03:31 (seven years ago) link

The next one I'm up for is the solo beatles poll but there's a shit ton on the list ahead of that

Οὖτις, Thursday, 9 February 2017 03:38 (seven years ago) link

i don't think order matters anymore, do you? if you can run a poll that would be perfect, imo. i will do Talking Heads after that if you decide to go ahead.

Bee OK, Thursday, 9 February 2017 03:43 (seven years ago) link

Hard Rock/Hair Metal - gr8080
Stephin Merritt - Gukbe
Fairport Convention et al (R Thompson, S Denny) - Billy Dods
Jimi Hendrix - some dude
Genesis + solo - NickB
The Burt Bacharach songbook - C. Grisso/McCain
Dead C - Raymond Cummings
Royal Trux + side projects - sleeve
John Fahey - Naive Teen Idol?
Rush - Matt #2
Talking Heads - Bee OK
Gamble & Huff/Philly International Records - jetfan

^^^ the next general batch, yes? I'd say fair game to any of those before we go total free for all and abandon the whole premise of the thread. But Talking Heads is totally in there.

tales of a scorched-earth nothing (Doctor Casino), Thursday, 9 February 2017 04:00 (seven years ago) link

I could do Jimi Hendrix. What was the usual time frame before every poll started lasting four months? Two weeks voting, one week rollout?

ArchCarrier, Thursday, 9 February 2017 06:54 (seven years ago) link

I think some dude still wants to do the Hendrix poll himself, or at least that was the case the last time the idea of someone else taking it over was floated?

soref, Thursday, 9 February 2017 07:04 (seven years ago) link

Genesis + solo - NickB

^ sadly i don't have the time for this at all, so if anyone else wants to run it please do

Benylin Ascent (NickB), Thursday, 9 February 2017 07:08 (seven years ago) link

Eep, yeah, to clarify, ArchCarrier, I meant "fair game" for those individuals to step up and claim their quarters, not for others to take over their polls. Sorry for any confusion!

tales of a scorched-earth nothing (Doctor Casino), Thursday, 9 February 2017 13:39 (seven years ago) link

No prob!

ArchCarrier, Thursday, 9 February 2017 14:38 (seven years ago) link

Can I get back in queue please for the pop punk emo poll?

Mordy, Friday, 10 February 2017 15:54 (seven years ago) link

I could start it now if there's no objection...

Mordy, Friday, 10 February 2017 15:54 (seven years ago) link

Spottie, Friday, 10 February 2017 17:28 (seven years ago) link

i'll give it over the weekend for bee OK to give the go ahead. we can always start on monday. what sounds good - one week nomination, one week votes, one week results?

Mordy, Friday, 10 February 2017 20:08 (seven years ago) link

Go for it, we need something to start

Bee OK, Monday, 13 February 2017 19:56 (seven years ago) link

I feel like I'd like a slightly longer voting or nomination period but that may be just me

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 13 February 2017 19:59 (seven years ago) link

one week nomination feels right but i think a two week voting period feels more appropriate

Spottie, Monday, 13 February 2017 20:07 (seven years ago) link

yeah, more time for them deep listening dives, plus a shorter nomination process means less time for pedantry

If It Makes You Less Sad I Will POLL Emo Albums

Mordy, Monday, 13 February 2017 20:13 (seven years ago) link

So I've got the finefinemusic spreadsheet. What have ppl found is the easiest/best way to solicit ballots to input into the spreadsheet? It seems like if I give ppl something like 30 votes (which is built into the spreadsheet), if ppl give me less I'll have to manually number the ballots? (If they give 30 exactly I can just copy/paste the 1 through 30 over and over?) Thoughts?

Mordy, Thursday, 16 February 2017 05:02 (seven years ago) link

Check my answer in the albums poll :)

ArchCarrier, Thursday, 16 February 2017 07:06 (seven years ago) link

When I've done these polls I have a vlookup looking from the album position to a list of the points allocated to the each position. Do as little manual entry as possible, get your formulas to do all the work.

I'm happy to do the spreadsheeting for you if you want, I helped Bee OK with the Van Halen poll a few months ago.

nate woolls, Thursday, 16 February 2017 09:04 (seven years ago) link

hahaha good title!

May I please be added to the huge queue for a poll?

I'd like to run a Math-rock/Hardcore/Post-Hardcore poll.

I asked in 2015 to be added to the list for a grunge poll and it didnt get added. So please whoever is in charge now add me :)

Odysseus, Friday, 10 March 2017 16:22 (seven years ago) link

can't wait for all the "not post-hardcore" posts in that thread

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 10 March 2017 16:24 (seven years ago) link

haha

the poll where the EMO NERDS get their revenge

Odysseus, Friday, 10 March 2017 16:26 (seven years ago) link

Math-rock on its own I dont think would get enough participants

Odysseus, Friday, 10 March 2017 16:27 (seven years ago) link

after discussing with sund4r I think i may expand it to any post bad brains punk inc the green days and the fobs etc. but not 77 punk or post-punk. but theres gonna be years before anything needs decided :)
