"jaded" is class

subaltern 8 (Michael B), Sunday, 24 November 2013 22:07 (ten years ago) link

"Artful Dodger meets Kaito" is such a simple and charming equation I am surprised it hasn't been adopted by every musician ever.

Same.

MikoMcha, Monday, 25 November 2013 06:48 (ten years ago) link

Jaded is brilliant yeah, I'd never heard of the other remixes so it hadn't occurred to me they were anything more than an excellent one-off.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 17:15 (ten years ago) link

tim where did you find these people? i hadn't even seen their name prior to this thread

lex pretend, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 17:21 (ten years ago) link

They did a Mixmag mix the other month as well, kind of right in the sweet spot between the Black Butter stable and the beachier end of Hot Creations, George Fitzgerald etc.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 17:29 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, was gonna post that. It's definitely hits focussed, but a nice selection of big tracks this year.

MikoMcha, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 17:34 (ten years ago) link

DJ Q, I'm guessing is the answer from Tim.

MikoMcha, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 17:34 (ten years ago) link

that lana del rey remix is damn good as well

lex pretend, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 17:47 (ten years ago) link

Yeah DJ Q plays "Jaded" a lot.

It and Drums of Death' "True" are my 2013 sweet house jams, but I think you're all over "True" already.

Tim F, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 19:20 (ten years ago) link

kinda surprised by "true" as a choice, i like it a lot but gorgon city & yasmin's "real" and the collected works of lulu james are my top house trax

lex pretend, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 19:24 (ten years ago) link

Well "Real" was totally my jam during the first half of the calendar year.

Tim F, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 20:22 (ten years ago) link

of black butter stuff i like "thin lines" the best, "real" is good tho

le goon (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 20:29 (ten years ago) link

ive been missing all this stuff bc work cant believe i first heard the words 'black butter' from a PITCHFORK ARTICLE

i like artful dodger. i still have my copy of "rewind 2001"! and i like kaito too, so i feel entitled to an opinion.

i will say that i was a little surprised by how on the nose this was a tim pick when he sent it to me. has there been perhaps a little holding pattern as we've crested thirty?? lol

rap steve gadd (D-40), Thursday, 5 December 2013 02:36 (ten years ago) link

In truth I feel slightly ambivalent about having singled out this tune as a standalone thing when it is really best understand in the context of the great conundrum that is DJ Q's 2013 Ministry of Sound sets.

Tim F, Thursday, 5 December 2013 04:41 (ten years ago) link

have you heard "careless" cause it's really good

the late great, Thursday, 5 December 2013 06:53 (ten years ago) link

Careless is sort of a subdued version of Jaded, isn't it? Like a Jaded light or something.

god this lana del rey remix has just blown the track open for me

I'M FEELING ELECTRIC TONIGHT

lex pretend, Tuesday, 17 December 2013 13:24 (ten years ago) link

Yeah how good is it!

It was that track that made me feel like these guys have life beyond an inspired one-off.

There's a dance remix of "Summertime Sadness" that plays on the radio all the time here, and I keep thinking it has none of the fleet-footed lift of this version.

Tim F, Tuesday, 17 December 2013 15:44 (ten years ago) link

The one that was a huge hit I presume? So weird, that. I actually like it in an odd way but this is certainly how it shouldve been

lex pretend, Tuesday, 17 December 2013 17:59 (ten years ago) link

Haha was it a huge hit? I wouldn't even know anymore. It seemed alright but very trudging and enervated compared to this.

Tim F, Tuesday, 17 December 2013 20:21 (ten years ago) link

i love this song so much

It's a bit more successful than their other songs, so I'm assuming it got at least a bit of traction outside of ILX.

lol i've been overdosing on these guys this morning and the deeper you sink into their sets interviews etc the deeper the conviction that these guys really and truly are the official ilx golden girls retirement home resident djs. it's actually kinda ridiculous!!

like it's not even "club djs play the hits, big deal" but there's just so many personal innate fave fruity fluoro melodijams that we've <3'd en passant on threads/vibes they've never quite been directly relevant to or been key drivers of that they have featured and foregrounded. they're like the single eureka reference point that brings together the pop moodboard all around u, it's great, really addictive

the singular x factor that they have i think is the tracky, sinuous, serpentine groove they weave tend to weave into this stuff, much more of an in-the-pocket lithe n lissom techno funk vibe than their chunkier peers

This is a big step up on their last EP but Gyptian is not really bringing his a-game here. I suppose they're getting an arsenal of festival jams together and I totally get why they're doing it but I miss the fizz and exuberance of the first few tunes.
