The Philly show was essentially a house show, hosted by a row house attached to a corner bodega at a West Philly intersection that would have been far sketchier if it wasn't blanketed in snow. For reasons unknown to me, the publicist put me on a guest list, but seeing the family environment I coughed up the whopping $5 admission, keen to support the scene and all.

Despite the weather, the living room was adequately filled when Perfect Pussy played. It was a short show, only a handful of songs each played more briskly than the one before with vocals buried in the "mix" (which might be a feature not a bug, based on the tape I purchased.) But the band had an interesting sound, chaotic but held together by the skin of it's sharpened teeth, with synthesizer squeals adding a surprisingly important component. But the singer was the star, a ball of righteous fury whose conviction made me want to go to war for her if she asked, or maybe if she didn't but needed the help.

I purchased their cassette, the first tape I received in any form since a record label attempted to circumvent piracy by sending out advance tapes for the black metal band Dimmu Borgir some time ago. The last time I paid for a tape? I cannot even guess. And listening to it now, I can hear (like, literally) why I refuse to join in with the hipster black metal cassette trend. But this was all they had (and a white tee-shirt which I would have bought because while I have an affinity for profane articles of clothing, I never wear white shirts) and it's a tape hiss hot mess though I will eventually be convinced the background buzz is part of the audio experience.

There is a subtle subterfuge beneath the main narrative of Perfect Pussy, one that is even more profound than the blaring speed and volume, and this can be said not only of the disarmingly personal lyrics that are purposefully difficult to decipher but also of the Joy Division-like rhythms that snake beneath the carnage. But even if all you have time for is the fury, you can do a lot worse.

brimstead, Friday, 21 March 2014 22:51 (ten years ago) link

Yes the schoolyards are now clear of blood. All that can be heard is the sound of puns, obscure cutting references, well considered snark, elaborate asides and general glorious eloquence piled upon eloquence deciding who is top dog. I also note that the Ukraine situation has been thus far free of fists. Action movies are no longer relevant and boxing has lost it's former prestige. Even Mike Tyson prefers Twitter. Tis a golden age to be sure.

Hype is fun bc makes me feel part of something in distanced age of internet

sonic thedgehod (albvivertine), Saturday, 22 March 2014 00:18 (ten years ago) link

Yes. And what is meant by hype in this case? Seems to me it just means that 'Pitchfork likes it' + a couple.of other articles in supposedly influential publications. It's not like there are billboards everywhere, viral campaigns and well managed appearances on Ellen. This is pretty small scale hype I would say - 99.99 percent of the population has no idea this band exists. But I welcome a bit of excitement and hyperbole...if that's how it makes you feel then why not? I don't want to always feel jaded and cynical about new music despite that fact that age and experience are inevitably wearying. Remember how it used to feel?

Hinklepicker, Saturday, 22 March 2014 00:43 (ten years ago) link

Just saw them but her mic wasn't working for the entire set. Like, you couldn't hear her at all for the entire thing. It was a bit weird, you'd think they'd stop the set and give her another mic. People kept glaring at the soundman but he just kept shrugging like he couldn't do anything about it. The soundman sent someone onstage to check the mics after they'd finished, and they worked OK for the headline band, so I dunno wtf that was about.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Saturday, 2 August 2014 22:11 (nine years ago) link

john wahey (NickB), Saturday, 2 August 2014 22:56 (nine years ago) link

Not at all? I've heard reports from shows on this (UK) tour that the vocals were way too low. I'm sceptical about some of those reports 'cause the vocals aren't necessarily that discernable on initial listens on the recorded material, and when I saw them last week in Brighton the levels seemed more or less similar to the records. They went down a storm in any case.

A few years ago I saw a Shoppers show in a basement where the bassist's amp wasn't working at all, but rather than wait until she figured it out they played a solid third of the set without her while she messed around with it helplessly. Meredith Graves really doesn't seem like she sweats the details

Evan R, Sunday, 3 August 2014 01:17 (nine years ago) link

tbh I haven't heard anything by Perfect Pussy before, so maybe they are an instrumental band with a miming Bez dancing around in front, I did wonder.

This was how they were in Brighton

http://youtu.be/5t6sqV9ooXw

One of the things with the records is gradually hearing more of the lyrics I guess, it makes sense having the lyrics swimming in the middle of the mix. I've seen other clips of them live where the lyrics were more clearly audible though.

Basically / I Don't Wanna Be / An mp3 / 3-2-0 kb / ps (Craigo Boingo), Sunday, 3 August 2014 12:48 (nine years ago) link

That's what I kept thinking I suppose, she was obviously putting a lot into singing or shouting or whatever she does, it was quite unsettling that there was no sound coming out, and most of the music seemed pretty interchangeable noise guitars so the lyrics must be part of the appeal I assume. Maybe the people at the front could hear her through proximity but the gig was in the back room of a pub so I wasn't that far away.

I started wondering if it was some kind of art statement about the female voice being drowned out by males or something.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Sunday, 3 August 2014 12:58 (nine years ago) link

The venue manager just posted on FB - She had her hand totally covering the mic (Sound tech and I were listening through the headphones on the desk, nae vocals)

So yeah, dunno what that was about, but it was a bit shit.
