mashups/bootlegs in the 2010s

hi welcome to 2004. first off i loved these back, still play some to this day. seems there's been a little underground movement of people keeping the flame, and overall the quality has got better as the quantity has decreased.

here's some of the best newer ones:

http://vimeo.com/17695110

generally involves a LOT of crate/webpage digging to find anything decent - current ratio 1:50 so any more you know of, gratefully listened to.

also if you want to use thread discuss state of mashup/bootleg culture originators in this thread that's fine with me. personally: gutted at erol's direction into big field techno sludge, delighted at richard x's continuing involvement in pop (overdue a hit), terrible shame what happened to freelance hellraiser and not sure about go home productions other than he mixed a christina aguilera song and has done the music for an advert. oh and soulwax, never much cared for anything they did other than the push it and get yr freak/faith boots (especially loathed their indie band) but they're not doing too bad in 2013 with their own radio station channel on the year's big billion dollar ent event. what happened to osymyso?

back then it felt like it was really going to change, entirely new way of listening, making, dancing to music but then just kinda faded away after 'freak like me', with the odd little mainstream bit here and there. anyways i loved it, still do, and interested what you guys think too.

terrible shame what happened to freelance hellraiser

huh ?

there was his freelance hellraiser album where he tried to go indie dance/pop .. which was not what people expected

but after that he worked with macca on twin freaks, produced/wrote for vv brown, ladyhawke, little boots, has worked on a project with richard x (sworn to secrecy), and is the production force behind the chart topping london grammar album.

not too shabby if you ask me ..

as for my current fave ..

yes, its a couple of cliche tracks, but the outcome is massive ..

I was coming here to post that one, I was at a village hall event last month where he went into detail about creating that including playing us a lot of the isolated tracks. We then ended up talking at some length about just how sloppy Lennon's bass playing is, which is really obvious when not covered by other instruments.

I really dug The Kleptones' Uptime/Downtime album which was released on Janurary 1,2010, if that counts.

thanks guys. no need to be too strict on the timeline, that was just a way to avoid any of the well-worn ones (get yr freak on, xtina vs strokes, etc). there are some superb things going on out there but it's barely reported, really keen to find any more i might have missed.

reborn identity has some great ones in amongst it all. there's a superb one with the klf that sounds like a brand new top 40 house track from 91 but it's been taken down it seems (called 'The Reborn Identity - City In The Clouds (Fetal Pulse vs Fetal Pulse vs The Temptations vs Soul II Soul vs KLF' if you can find it)

also, a guy called cosmic dawn is doing decent work in a more chartpop vein: https://soundcloud.com/cosmicdawntv/cosmic-dawn-mashup-independent though that's more megamix than mashup if we're being strict about it

ciara and helter skelter ones brilliant (will be djing with all these btw so huge thanks).

deal with freelance hellraiser, or so i heard on the vagueline, is that he was massively in demand after his superb early bootlegs, did some promising production work, signed up with sony (?) but some tangled ugly label shit went down and he was pretty much unable to record or release anything for months/years, completely stymieing his progress, no doubt doing his head in and putting him off the whole thing. can imagine him reading around these parts so maybe he'll tell the full story. though he did do the album with mccartney didn't he? must have done ok off the. the title 'waiting for clearance' of his 2006 album is pretty telling, 2006 being prob too many years after it all exploded to really stick.

still richard x did well out of it and he seems a lovely friendly guy so it's not all bad

xpost to mark e, just seen what you put after writing this - yeah i heard all this a cpl of years back, prior to the london grammar thing. the key gripe seemed to be that when he should have been out releasing and gigging at the prime time he was basically banned from doing so. brilliant to hear he's doing good stuff now - esp interested in the rich x stuff

quite chuffed that people are on this thread, as there was a time that the whole bootleg/mash thing became hated.
i'm with ni ..
in fact i would say that when the whole bootleg scene blew up was the last time i really connected with a new direction in pop music.
it was fun and made new noises out of old records.
yeah there was a lot of crap "released", but when a good mash worked, damn it was good.

have no idea re freelance and the sony thing.
i'll ask him at some point.
all i know is that it was during that period that i coerced him to drop into a basement that doran was running at the time and do a set, and totally ruled.
also, i know he grew tired of the bootleg thing as well.
hence he set up the 'straight to video' nights ..
but that could have been a way around the legal gumph from sony.
i still have the halloween mix that he did for straight to video somewhere.
may have to dig that out for this weekend.

you never posted that Twin Freaks track!

agree that the Summermash is rather lovely and v well-done, even though I don't know half the originals (probably a help. also have not seen the Rapey Lines video and damn Pharrell reaches new heights of looking like a clown in those clips)

and sorry Ian but that Sensible / Problems mix is pissweak :( . actually sounds like a pale shadow of the old 99 Luftballoons / 99 Problems mash, come to think.

ͼѾͽ (sic), Friday, 25 October 2013 20:31 (ten years ago) link

ahh ... thats cos its not really a twin freaks track as such ..
(roy made it from various youtube interviews with macca)
i'll drop a link on this thread over the weekend so you can hear it.

mark e, Friday, 25 October 2013 20:37 (ten years ago) link

as mentioned ..

its a throwaway track unlike the proper twin freaks material.

mark e, Saturday, 26 October 2013 16:25 (ten years ago) link

ha, it's great though

did you ever 'secretly' blog that? I feel like I've heard the "donk donk donk donk donk" sometime before, at least...

yes.
i posted it on the blog when freelance sent it over.

yeah, obviously similar to the red balloons one but a) i've overplayed the fuck out of that and b) it's kinda superdumb whereas 'wot' adds a great 80s popfunk feel if you don't know the original (which i don't). need to edit out captain's rap, mind.

got a 320 of the jungle bros/loaded track off the guy who made it, massive thanks to whoever posted that - going to be a staple of my sets for a few weeks.

qu: is there a bootleg of glen miller's in the mood with a hip hop track? can imagine *something* really working, like a driving rhythmic 'gold digger' type thing. is there anything like this?

NI, Sunday, 27 October 2013 13:07 (ten years ago) link

mark e, you're right in that mashups/bootlegs are in a weird position now. after the initial burst there was a long time when the usual ilx types were sneering at the very idea but that's faded now. think most non-musos were only vaguely aware of it as a phenomenon so a good one still sounds really exciting/interesting played in a club/on radio. total boon for a dj playing a party set, which is why i'm focusing on hunting out the best ones i've missed over the past decade.

would be good to read an article about the whole thing, by peter robinson, dorian l, someone like that

NI, Sunday, 27 October 2013 13:11 (ten years ago) link

xpost to myself there's a mashup for 'killing in the name of' with glenn miller which works well but you wouldn't want to hear it more than once or play it to other people.

i'm sure i remember a great bootleg using the vocal to 'forgot about dre' but intensive googling is coming up with nothing. anyone help?

(diff dre song but this is nice enough: https://soundcloud.com/samplegee/dr-dre-vs-buena-vista-social )

I'm sure there was a Forgot mash too, but likewise can't recall what

mark e, Thursday, 13 February 2014 15:25 (ten years ago) link

tch, that'll be the beatles legal team won't it?

lot of the bootlegs with hip hop vocals are censored as the available acapellas are all pg-friendly for some reason. i've spent many hours cueing and eqing the likes of kanye, 50 cent and snoop saying 'fuck' and 'nigger' to make the bootlegs as naughty as the original. a chore certainly but 100x better than the alternative, for a friday night dancefloor
