Is there any cd comps?

I am a Bill Lamey fan myself

hard to find those celtic 78s (at least in my experience), but I believe these were mostly re-issued on Shanachie in the 70s (though I could be wrong), and I believe their is a CD comp of Bill Lamey that was put out sometime in the 90s, but I am not 100% sure. There were definitely some comps put out on Shanachie on LP in the 70s as well ('This Is Sydney' 'Cape Breton Violins' etc, which is how I heard of of stuff in the first place) good shit this.

Yeah, I first heard a lot of this stuff via Shanachie. Bill Lamey rules!
I remember hearing an Angus Chisolm tune on one of the volumes of "The Secret Museum of Mankind" that Pat Conte put together and I was HOOKED. Took me another two years to find the Chisolm LP that Shanachie did.

I don't own any cape breton 78s, though I do keep a look out for them on ebay. A guy I know lives in Nova Scotia and has an incredible collection of this stuff.

^^ i would like to own this, but since I went overboard lately buying hillbilly 78s I need to not bid.

UMS:
I did a quick look on amazon but can't find a CD comp of the classic 78rpm era stuff. OTOH, you could probably listen to a lot worse than those who followed after them.

ha! i read the title and knew this was an ian thread
i can't help you, but i do remember some lady who had an album called "my roots are showing" and i cringed for the awfulness of that title before learning that it was cape breton fiddle music, which i would probably like

sometimes i wonder about starting a reissue label, but could i possibly sell more than 100 copies of this stuff? i do not know.

i dunno -- an ethical/thorough high quality package with notes and downloads? i bet > 100 ppl would bite. you're already operating a store by yourself as it is, right?

One of things I love so much about this music, and also some Irish fiddle records, is the sound of the piano playing rhythm. There were not many American old-time country bands who used piano, at least that I'm aware of. The Shelor Family (aka Dad Blackard's Moonshiners), Bob Larkin's Music Makers, some late Charlie Poole sides, but who else? In the U.S.A. you hear a lot about how the record companies thought the piano overwhelmed the sound of the other instruments, and I guess given the primitive recording technology that's a valid concern. But to me it's such a rich, enchanting sound.

xp to LL: not a physical store, just an internet store. and i am selling records at an upcoming record fair.

xp to self: Also I guess the Reaves White County Ramblers usually played with a piano but had to make due with a pump organ at their recording sessions? Would love to hear those tunes with the piano.

i know! i just think it's possible -- even more so with internet store.

two weeks pass...

i got a few of those records from skot, and he sent me a copy of the great jerry holland LP on rounder -- here is a nice interview with holland that talks a lot about the history of cape breton fiddling etc.
