Is It Because I'm Black is one of my favourite albums ever. Back For a Taste of Your Love is excellent too. He did some great stuff.

When I first started digging into this stuff I have to admit I thought he was just a second-rate Al Green - maybe because his cover of Take Me To The River feels a little unneccessary to my ears - but he's definitely his own thing. I have a lot of affection for the lesser-known (at least relative to Al) Hi Records guys now - Syl Johnson and Otis Clay especially.

I was in the same boat. Was introduced to Syl Johnson as 'if you like Al Green' but grew to love him more than Al Green. Same with O.V. Wright. Would rather listen to both of them now over AG.

On some other thread I once wrote :

I saw Syl Johnson awhile back (2009) as part of the Numero Group Eccentric Soul tour. Still has an impressive voice

six years pass...

Have had the Numero box gathering dust on my shelf for a few years*. Just started digging into the vinyl, beginning w/the actual Twinight albums, and haven't felt this good in awhile.

*Usually when I need a Syl fix I reach for that shitty but wonderful Collectables comp, or pull up the Twinight Singles set on Spotify.

Those Twinight albums are just perfection, impossible not to smile while listening.

His recent stuff, I'm less into:
