Psychedelic Rock that's not Psychedelic Rock

I came across this music clip a few weeks back and keep going back to it as the music is just really cool. I swear without the visual, you would think it is some krautrock Ash Ra psych jam band - except it's not, it's some dudes playing the town picnic.

I think some of the Gamelan music also has this kind of disassociation as the music sounds very electronic, yet it is as acoustic as you can get.

Well, I tweeted this link last night and about 3 label folks I know replied instantly w/ more information about them so I'd guess "t minus 6 months"?

Oblique Strategies, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 00:23 (eleven years ago) link

Hell I'd buy that record.

Evan, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 00:35 (eleven years ago) link

That kind of jam and an indie ironic name, brothers set the controls for the heart of the sun!

A standard engagement has the band setting up at the hosting household during the morning rituals, playing several low-key sets from the comfort of plastic lawn chairs occasionally working in a cover version of a foreign classic (The Cranberries "Zombie") while the beer and whiskey flow freely.

So ridiculously excited about this. So far, it's sounds great. Exactly what I was expecting...which is the same jams (as the youtube videos) with much improved sound quality. Although, I always did think that the rough editing and the various party sounds and crowd noises in the background of the videos was very charming.

Very fun record. Agreed that it loses a bit of the spontaneity of the live recordings, but the freewheeling vibe makes it such a breeze to listen straight through. Love the percussion.

a near-clone of the Wired article though

Perhaps this has shown up elsewhere but I was pleased that the Newsweek article posted the track that morphs into "Zombie" for a bit.

I can't get enough of this album. There is so much joy in it, or at least it seems that way to me. Very excited for the vinyl to arrive.

finally got around to listening to this, it's so rad. loses some of the lofi charm and atmosphere of those vids but i think the music is a bit more dynamic this time around?

global tetrahedron, Tuesday, 23 September 2014 22:24 (nine years ago) link

I'm waiting for my copy - I would totally pay for an album of just field recordings like the vids, though.

Much less laid-back and more intentionally "experimental" than Khun Narin, I guess.

so not gonna häpna (seandalai), Tuesday, 27 January 2015 00:12 (nine years ago) link

Kinda Boredoms-ish? There's a 25 minute video of them playing around Java and I'm trying to figure out what the hell the stringed instrument is the one guy's playing. Looks like a Chapman stick, sounds like Neubauten. Dunno if I'd want an album by them but I'd definitely see them live.

pelvic slang (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Tuesday, 27 January 2015 08:59 (nine years ago) link

According to the Wire article I found out about them in, it is "a long bamboo trunk strung with metal and bamboo string. Modelled on the valiha tube zither from Madagascar, it also has connections to stringed instruments found in remote corners of Indonesia. This is an amplified zither Wukir has fashioned himself and christened the bambuwukir. Musically it stretches from delicate harp filigree to rampaging percussion workouts, influenced by the hectic kuntulan drumming groups of East Java. It's the strings cut from the kin of the bamboo itself that generate Senyawa's powerful rhythmic patterns." So there you go.

Holy shit that is great. This happened so fast. Amazing times.

Hadrian VIII, Sunday, 13 December 2015 16:10 (eight years ago) link

It seems like maybe something has shifted in their sound in this context—even from the record? But in a really really good way, like they are accenting the right rock tropes.

Hadrian VIII, Sunday, 13 December 2015 16:25 (eight years ago) link

I want this recording.

yeah this is wonderful, really groovy

Mordy, Sunday, 13 December 2015 16:30 (eight years ago) link

I think the big thing with the difference in the sound is just everything is miked up and mixed.

They have definitely upped the level of whoops and celebratory howls like they're Blueshammer.
