voice-wise they can be similar, especially in falsetto. but i think it speaks volumes that Thicke's big breakthrough came out less than a month after FS/LS but "SexyBack" and "Lost Without U" represent such vastly different approaches that only the hackiest hack would've dwelled on the comparison for too long.

If you compare "Justified" to "A beautiful World" the comparison bears even less scrutiny.

after about 15 listens, I've decided it's not a disaster. i'm ok with it. fingers are crossed for the album to make me forget about it

i actually really did hate sexyback in the beginning! definitely on the low end of that album for me

Don't care much for Mirrors, other than maybe the ending, but I liked the new one her performed last night.

JT is a whopping 32. It's only been six years since the last album, which had several hits and a big tour, so call it less than six years. He's hardly a has-been but has had all the time and money and talent to do better than what we're getting now.

I don't think Bieber is more exciting than JT because I have absolutely zero expectations for Bieber. He's no more exciting than any other pop automaton. JT has a spark, though, which is what makes him so likable. He can act, he's funny, he can sing and dance OK, and his two albums have been great.

He massively transcends lil kid entertainment, in other words. I haven't seen Bieber live yet, but I bet the crowd on average is a lot more limited in age than what you'd find at a JT show, unless you're counting all the parents waiting in cars outside.

someone tweeted earlier that they think timberlake still doesn't have any burning desire to return to music, he's only here because myspace flopped. JT coming back with a great album was (and might still be) just as likely as JT coming back with a dud, i don't think comebacks follow any "rules" as such. but he gave every indication that the long hiatus was down to disinterest in the first place, and laying ~renewed interest~ on so thick in that first teaser clip should have rung some alarm bells in retrospect.

Fair enough. I still think Bieber comes off like a total doorknob, though. JT never seemed like a total doofus moron, and c. "Celebrity" he was getting tons of credit for N*Sync's best moments - literally, too, since he's all over the songwriting, and not bundled along with a half dozen collaborator cushions like the Beeb is. Granted, it took "Justified" to really anchor him as a creative force, but he at least seemed like he was building toward that. If anything, Bieber seems to be getting dumber and less ambitious. lol see that's the part that depresses me - I don't know, this might be unfair on Bieber, but I don't attribute his best work to him the way I do for Timberlake. I think a lot of the good songs that Bieber's recorded so far seem like happy accidents rather than sounds that he specifically pursued, whereas with JT it was very obvious what he wanted to do when he went solo (I've always seen NSYNC's breakup as a result of creative differences btw - there's that tension on 'Celebrity' with JT going urban/R&B and JC going more towards 2-step/dance music).

JT has always showed at the very least, a really good ear for pop music and I don't think I buy the idea that that goes away as soon as you hit your 30s. I just think a lot of what we've been hearing so far this year sounds really lazy and he knows better.

Lots of young people know JOHNNY CASH is the name of a Famous Person; it may not mean familiarity with his music.

on another note, I just realized the other day how much I love "All Tied Up"

Love After War (ping pong take note) is def his weakest album other than maybe the first tho, which I've never heard. Something Else is his best altho The Evolution of Robin Thicke is maybe his most definitive

The idea of Timberlake being a distinct step up from Thicke doesn't really wash with me. Timberlake is the better entertainer and is infectiously charming but Thicke is the superior vocalist and has a better grasp on the sensuous.

I wish I could unhear Mirrors.

thicke has some jams and his albums are all very solid and he's definitely underrated in a general sense, but dude's not holding a candle to FS/LS or the singles off 'justified'

right this is actually the first time i've ever listened to one of these pre-release streams that are just one track and what with every song having separate intros/outros and also lasting a million years long each, i'm not sure whether these songs are actually structureless or if i'm just being confused

i guess my other big problem with "mirrors" is that it sounds like he can't quite sing the chorus, it's painful

i think my general scepticism about JT projects despite the fact that i mostly love his music is pretty much down to the fact that he's really impressed with "classic" signifiers of artistry and really adept at marketing himself along those lines, and i couldn't care less - i have to ignore how he sells his albums, really.

Gotta say, I love Mirrors, and his performance of it on SNL was awesome (it helped that the band and backup singers all looked like they were having a blast). The lyrics are goofy as ever (what else is new), but it's hooky and and and. I just like it.

The album felt a little tedious on my inaugural listen, which was probably inevitable given the song lengths. But that hasn't bothered me so much on subsequent listens; the whole thing really hangs together well imo

there's a languidness to the album that is comparable to channel orange, but also a lot of other things

i dunno i just think "Memphis soul" is a pretty specific subgenre out of dozens of types of R&B that Justin may or may not draw from, and that it only gets mentioned, by him and other people, because he was born in Memphis, not because of anything you hear in the music. personal pet peeve of mine is all.

I realized watching him on SNL and Fallon this week that I think I like watching him perform better than just listening to him sing? I found the album kinda dull...it's okay, but not the wow I was expecting. but I really dig the songs I've seen him do live. It's weird, I've never really encountered that before.

charisma/cuetness helps I guess

This album is mostly dope and only falls off in the last two songs. People be tripping.

Actually, even "Mirrors" sounded better here than in isolation.

Except for the last track none of the long-ass songs feel long-ass and I love the languid, cozy feel of the rest.

but it doesn't work as a descriptor. the album doesn't sound futuristic. timbaland hasn't sounded futuristic in over a decade.

Whew: Caramanica doesn't like it.

He just wants to entertain. On “Saturday Night Live” recently he put his musical gifts to wide use, impersonating Elton John eulogizing Hugo Chávez in song, reprising his partnership with Andy Samberg as sensual early-’90s white R&B goons for a dating show sketch, and dressed up as a piece of tofu, hawking a vegan restaurant by singing health-friendly versions of Chic’s “Le Freak,” Trinidad James’s “All Gold Everything” and more.

He sounded more at home and vocally present in those moments than when singing his new songs, or almost anywhere on “The 20/20 Experience.” Forget the album; go see the show, or whatever else Mr. Timberlake applies his talents to. He’s learned how to be a musician who has no need to make records, the perfect solution to the modern economy.

The result is a smallness of purpose, with only slight variation throughout, like the deeply wholesome soul of “That Girl” or the drowsy “Blue Ocean Floor,” which had it been released two or three years ago, might have been called chillwave’s pop breakthrough. [...]
Seven of the 10 songs are more than seven minutes. In an era of Frank Ocean soul meditation, this could pass for artistry, but really it’s a gesture of conservatism, an argument for the album as a whole over whatever abbreviated singles will eventually be shipped to radio. It also harks back to ’70s soul, Prince’s funk breakdowns and Michael Jackson’s hyper-ornate pop. It is Mr. Timberlake radiating seriousness, lest you think his music making is frivolous.

w/r/t this - He gets a tremendous amount of mileage just for being a cool guy who’s willing to hang out with regular folk - it's true, but he's a luxe brand at the same time...it's very canny positioning, this sort of bridge between the increasingly remote gilded-cage opulence of kanye and jay-z, and "ordinariness". aspirationalism as classic film comfort blanket, shorn of the weird hard cold edges and triumphalism of his friends.

I don't get why that's conservative. There are lots of reasons to enjoy long songs and coherent albums that aren't "I <3 the 70s".

i think caramanica's argument - which would be mine too - is that in this case the song lengths really don't serve much purpose other than for the sake of just Being Long - they don't benefit the material and it doesn't feel needed.

I can see it's badly done, but I don't read it as automatically "conservative" - it's just a failure of execution. I hate the idea that long ambitious tracks (quality aside) are somehow more conservative than radio-ready pop hits. Both forms have existed for decades. It feels a bit like "Albums are over guys. Get with the bold new digital age," which I find very boring and limiting.

I can understand someone thinking it ended up lower aesthetically (I prefer Justified) but its aims were obviously grand.

justified was more low-key about its ambition and didn't wrap it up in an overarching marketing thing but i think the music on justified - both the range and the peaks - was far more of a daring statement in 2002 than FS/LS was in 2006
