I need more music that fits in with this style (early-mid 80s offbeat / mutant / italo, catchy synths, nonsense lyrics etc)

Just making a little compilation for myself. I intend to put it onto cassette tape for my friend's little car as I think this is a style he'd like. I'm not too fussed about time / context, just creating an overall feel.

Flash & the Pan - Midnight Man

Gichy Dan - Cowboys & Gangsters

Plustwo - Melody

Methusaleh - Zombie

Yellow Magic Orchestra - La Femme Chinoise

Disco Dancer Soundtrack - Jimmy Jimmy Aaja Aaja

I love this genre by the way (ZE Records, new wave gone disco, weird synthpop etc...) Hhere's another that has made several of my mixtapes.

Sex Kitten mind control slave (Dan Peterson), Friday, 2 November 2012 15:03 (6 months ago) Permalink

Thanks Dan, this is exactly the vibe I'm looking for - somewhere between ZE and Italo.

I had never heard that Plus Two track, that's great! Something kind of Kate Bush-like about the vocal line in one part. I really don't know a ton of Italo.

Another alltime favorite:

I really want to organize a dj night so I can spin this stuff again.

Another version of Midnight Man

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 6 November 2012 03:07 (6 months ago) Permalink

The Plustwo is one of my all time favourite tunes. Midnight Man is a new discovery, but absolutely fantastic. I'd love to mix it into a straight-up house set next to some Todd Terje or something.

make like a steak and beef (dog latin), Tuesday, 6 November 2012 10:02 (6 months ago) Permalink

^ i feel like there are probably a lot of mixes from the 2006-7 disco revival pd that do exactly that. not that it's ever a bad idea to play this stuff or that it doesn't pair well with house or w/e, but you might be able to steal some good tracks from those mixes (dj harvey, james murphy's fabriclive mix, rub n tug, etc). also a ton of comps from the mid '00s mine or overlap w/ this territory

(apologies if some of these are obvious or too straight ahead italo)

akadarbarijava (psychgawsple), Tuesday, 6 November 2012 10:52 (6 months ago) Permalink

I love "Put Your Pants On" - such a slow burner. I think I included it in my disco-reggae mix from a few years back.

make like a steak and beef (dog latin), Tuesday, 6 November 2012 11:07 (6 months ago) Permalink

yea ilm dance crew was obsessed with this stuff for a while, peaking with the whole beardo/cosmic thing. never thought of "put your pants on" as disco-reggae before tho

akadarbarijava (psychgawsple), Tuesday, 6 November 2012 11:11 (6 months ago) Permalink

btw, i'm really digging "slang teacher". looked into it and it turns out i recognize it from ilxor dan selzer's mix on rvng - which is yet another example of a great mix with a ton of this type of stuff in it

Super-obvious:

Double - Rangoon Moon
Zazu - Captain Starlight
Holger Czukay - Cool in the Pool
Sky - Desperate For Your Love

Yeah, that doesn't make sense... I definitely had it on a mix of some sort.

maybe these
Witness The Change (dub) - Pete Shelley
Big Man Restless - Kissing The Pink
Fire Island (Extended Mix) - Session
Help The Man (Dub) - Georgie Red
Telepatia! - Lavvi Ebbel
Kites - The Associates

Maybe too slow but in mutant disconotdisco camp

Good thing I occasionally search for my name or I'd never have spotted this thread.

Awesome to see the Vels posted above. The woman singing is Alice Cohen, who's been a NYC mainstay for years now. I think she even dated a certain ex-ILXor. She's still playing hip gigs around Brooklyn, and does really cool animation. http://alicecohen.bandcamp.com/

Dan, thanks to the link to Alice Cohen's new stuff. She's not a name I would be actively searching at all, and I honestly don't listen to many 2012 versions of 80s synthpop these days, but I'm halfway through her Pink Keys album this morning, and it's really hitting the spot. Very nice.

Yeah, well it's not like she's doing retro/revival synthpop...she's doing her own thing and the songs have always been good.
