this is kind of a dumb question but, who do y'all think fell off harder: neptunes or timbo?

even accounting for tim's sabbatical i don't think he ever had a period of mediocrity that stretched as long as the neptunes from, like, 2004 up until pretty recently (HHNF stans stand down). that said, i think tim from 08-present is kinda pushing that right now... even the neptunes down period was more repetitive & lazy as opposed to the offensively bad shit tim has been a part of for the last few years. and the neptunes/pharrell have sort of picked it up recently whereas tim hasn't had a hot track pop up on a random pop album since like flo-rida's first joint. plus there's the whole danja thing with tim's latter-day stuff as well.

I agree that Pharrell's pulling it back - Sweet Life is a great, subtle production. His style isn't as emphatic as it used to be but nor is it as generic as it became. Scrolling down the Neptunes wiki discography I'm surprised by how much post-2008 stuff I like, if not love, whereas Timbaland's output in the same period is a wasteland.

I think Timbo had more true one-of-a-kind talent/brilliance, and lost his magic touch more dramatically, in the sense that his best later stuff may have been driven by Danja or other co-producers, and there is just a ton of later stuff that contains nothing of what I consider Tim's musical character beyond his voice. Pharrell at his worst, which is pretty bad, has always felt kind of true to who Pharrell is, and I kind of feel like a lot of the failure of later Neptunes is aesthetic and almost technical; once they abandoned their best drum/synth sounds, they just never found new ones that worked remotely as well.

Also feel like the results of this are gonna be less interesting than the timbo poll - I suspect that the neptunes' stand-outs are much easier to spot. But we'll see.

the "imperial period" is a real thing, and both Tim and Neps are this century's best exemplars

really? my expectation has been the opposite. there will probably be fewer deep cuts in the mix but i feel like i have much less of an idea of what hits will do better than ohters.

Okay yeah that's probably true - I felt like my ballot felt more boring overall this time around but yeah the top ten was necessarily random ass in its ordering b/c how can you parse the qualitative differences between these tunes.

yeah the top 20 is kinda set in stone already but i feel like it could go in virtually any order

keep it moving w/ the schedule if you gotta, it's not like the idea of one ballot poll at a time is being honored by everyone that the people who do try to uphold it should bend over backwards to stick w/ it

srs question: at what point do we all just forward our ballots to a volunteer and run the results sans V79?

By Friday imo so it can get moving by monday next week.

obv it's not a great look for someone to drop off the grid for a while during a time when they'd signed up to run a poll but i really disliked the hostile takeover shit that happened with the james brown poll and see absolutely no harm in people just sitting tight and continuing to vote or talk about the neptunes itt until whenever V79 shows up again. hearing "excuse me miss" on the radio right now and it's reminding me that i always liked this song when i was a kid, and still kinda do :-/

'excuse me miss again' is very high on my list of i knew people would be too stupid to vote for this tracks

yeah that song is pretty dope

that era where the drums had started to go dinky but the synths were still fat and noisy made for some oddly top-heavy beats, which i appreciate more now than i did at the time.

"jigga please" off blueprint 2 being probably the most extreme example

I voted for that and almost voted for "excuse me miss again" but was too stupid, but yeah mainly because I just wanted to throw in one example of that indian summer period of neps beats.
