That, for me, was how I knew the '80s were finally over....

There's something very amusing about Adele's Bond theme (which should have been a complete commercial no-brainer) being kept off the top spot by Swedish House Mafia.
I suspect said amusement would swiftly abate upon actually listening to the Swedish House Mafia track in question.

Well they released it on a Friday, which just seems boneheaded because you that first initial burst of enthusiasm is wasted chart-wise (and there was LOTS of enthusiasm; Skyfall went to #4 on the strength of just 2 days of sales)

Exactly the same thing cost Born This Way number one despite massive sales last year.

If only it could have been Vic Reeves, who knocked U2 off.
Chris Martin cited this as an example of evil triumphing over good when the Crazy Frog denied Coldplay the number one they were entitled to. Ha ha.

people bought crazy frog precisely to stop Coldplay getting to #1. Same with Mr Blobby & Take That.
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 15 October 2012 11:12 (7 months ago) Permalink
Ten years later people still remember Crazy Frog, while you'll have to search far and wide to find someone who remembers what Coldplay song it fought off.

I cant remember which Coldplay or Take That songs were beaten, it's true.

this wasn't a dethronement, but i found it hilarious when "tik tok" blocked "bad romance" from the top week after week.
oh and there was that year that people bought "killing in the name" to prevent (successfully) xfactor from snagging the christmas number one for the millionth time. of course the winner's single ended up replacing it the very next week.
― teledyldonix, Monday, 15 October 2012 20:06 (7 months ago) Permalink
also personally i am a fan of whigfield's "saturday night" dethroning "love is all around" after it was #1 for 15 weeks

On the R&B chart Gladys Knight has deposed royalty repeatedly over the years.
In 1961 when she was a "Pip" her record "Every Beat of My Heart" took down Ben E. King's "Stand By Me"In 1971 "If I Were Your Woman" replaced King Floyd's "Groove Me"In 1974 "I've Got to Use My Imagination" replaced "Until You Come Back to Me" by the Queen of Soul Aretha FranklinIn 1983 "Save the Overtime (For Me)" replaced "Beat It" by the King of Pop Michael JacksonIn 1988 she toppled the King of Pop again when "Love Overboard" replaced "The Way You Make Me Feel"
