Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 22:47 (7 months ago) Permalink

one of the downsides of a super long countdown with most of the nominees present is way less suspense and possibility for surprise toward the end

Algeddie Trunkeeper (some dude), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 22:50 (7 months ago) Permalink

were you too busy to vote then? you and timellison made the most noise on the noms threads I then acquiesced to your complaints with allowing certain bands/albums yet neither of you voted.
Anyway I hope you both still post here and enjoy the poll.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 22:51 (7 months ago) Permalink

Guys, I think AG just likes to be on the internet. Let him count down 400 albums from a pool of only 556 if he wants. I'm kinda over being a crank about this. Jump on or off the bus when necessary.

Simply tabulating requires minimal effort now for me (for the EOY poll most of my time goes into the stats), so I can probably help out.

really? how many points do you waste doing an unweighted ballot?

― cock chirea, Friday, October 5, 2012 3:05 AM (7 hours ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

This time round you got 10 extra points to give out with a weighted/split ballot compared to an unweighted ballot. But really the main benefit of having a weighted portion is that you get to give more points to the albums you care about more (or think need more help) - even if an unweighted ballot seems easier, it's probably not the case that you care about every album equally.

would be interested to see where, exactly, the aesthetic boundaries get drawn in the '70s poll.

some dude, Friday, 5 October 2012 11:10 (7 months ago) Permalink

i don't think i bought a single "rock" record between 1990 and 1997 as i was so immersed in electronic music so i'd find that of interest to see what gems i missed out on, but a 70s poll would be more fun.

stirmonster, Friday, 5 October 2012 11:23 (7 months ago) Permalink

Well it appears there's support for a 70s poll and seandalai says its no problem then shall we do a nominations thread then see what aesthetic boundaries we can agree on? I think we will be less strict but again less sure about springsteen. Still , that's what the thread is for. Because you want to vote for it isn't enough reason to have an album nominated so in borderline cases i think a good case has to be provided.

Anyway dont reply to that here - leave it for

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 5 October 2012 11:32 (7 months ago) Permalink

haha dude you HAVE to come up with a different name than 'Anti-Rolling Stone Canon' for this stuff, it'll make even less sense with the 70s poll

some dude, Friday, 5 October 2012 11:45 (7 months ago) Permalink

well lets wait and see what is nominated. but for archival purposes its easier to keep these titles.
I guess a 70s poll will be a more alternative rolling stone canon rather than anti rolling stone canon.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 5 October 2012 11:51 (7 months ago) Permalink

I dunno I think you could still keep the spirit of the poll going in the 70s - no dylan, no byrds - and rolling stone wasn't exactly singing the high praise of sabbath and the stooges in the 70s

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 11 October 2012 10:37 (7 months ago) Permalink

will have another think. my motivation died a bit when the parameters kept changing but i'll try to get back into it.

stirmonster, Thursday, 11 October 2012 10:40 (7 months ago) Permalink

well its still the same parameters as this one. Just no jazz or minimalism (which wasnt allowed in 80s poll anyway)
You know theres lots of 70s music could have fit into this poll. That needs nominated and talked about.
Plus I get to introduce people to funk records! (i stood firm on funk)

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 11 October 2012 10:45 (7 months ago) Permalink

I got introduced to trust back in '81 cuz they were on the heavy metal soundtrack (which tbh did not have much actual heavy metal on it). could never find any records by them in the states until the worldwide internet computer came along, crazy that you saw em live, stirmonster.

I think it used to way back 10 years ago but I must admit not in the last 5? Shellac always seemed way more popular for some reason.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 14 October 2012 14:43 (7 months ago) Permalink

I assume you're just as surprised they won both polls as the rest of us then?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 14 October 2012 14:46 (7 months ago) Permalink

theres a lot of residual love for albini but shellac seem to be in that historical 'blind spot' of recent antiquity where they are not quite old enough to really canonical while still seeming quite estranged from contemporary music

atomizer is 26 years old....i can't help but think how 26 years in the other direction is almost before time

Cornelius Chi-Dubem Udebuluzor (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Sunday, 14 October 2012 14:51 (7 months ago) Permalink

the sonic youth (and hüsker du) vote was always going to be split so there was a space for something to creep in, especially by an artist with just 1 or 2 albums

ppl were voting for an idea as much as any particular record and big black certainly epitomize that caustic, dysphoric 'spirit' of the 80s underground probably as well as anyone else.....even more than early swans or sonic youth id say

Cornelius Chi-Dubem Udebuluzor (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Sunday, 14 October 2012 15:00 (7 months ago) Permalink

I forgot to mention earlier, but this poll is like the revenge of underdog metal, kicking the shit out of the normal heavy hitters Metallica, Slayer (South of Heaven way down at 267!), Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Megadeth. The combined '80s sales of all the below albums probably were a fraction of anything from the aforementioned five. I picked up some CDs of Manilla Road and Saint Vitus.

10 Saint Vitus - Born Too Late 1855 Points, 26 Votes, Two #1s
11 Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus 1838 Points, 25 Votes, Three #1s
21 Trouble - Psalm 9 1656 Points, 24 Votes, One #1
35 Saint Vitus - Saint Vitus 1211 points, 21 Votes, One #1
40 Melvins - Ozma 1149 Points, 21 Votes
41 Melvins - Gluey Porch Treatments 1141 Points, 20 Votes, Two #1s
45 Candlemass - Nightfall 1085 Points, 18 Votes
46 Manilla Road - Crystal Logic 1071 Points, 17 Votes
57 Celtic Frost - To Mega Therion 851 Points, 17 Votes, One #1
60 Celtic Frost - Morbid Tales 799 Points, 15 Votes
89 Voivod - Nothingface 616 Points, 10 Votes
90 Celtic Frost - Into the Pandemonium 614 Points, 11 Votes
96 Napalm Death - Scum 591 Points, 11 Votes
97 Bathory - Under The Sign Of The Black Mark 589 Points, 10 Votes
119 Witchfinder General - Death Penalty 491 Points, 8 Votes
122 Candlemass - Tales Of Creation 482 Points, 9 Votes
135 Cirith Ungol - King Of The Dead 450 Points, 11 Votes
143 Cirith Ungol - Frost and Fire 431 Points, 9 Votes
145 Candlemass - Ancient Dreams 430 Points, 8 Votes
148 Saint Vitus - V 407 Points, 9 Votes
170 Venom - Black Metal 360 Points, 9 Votes
198 Bathory - Blood Fire Death 324 Votes 6 Votes
201 Voivod - Dimension Hatross 316 Points, 8 Votes
209 Manilla Road - The Deluge 305 Points, 7 Votes
219 Manilla Road - Open The Gates 288 Points, 6 Votes
228 Atheist - Piece Of Time 270 Points, 4 Votes
248 Trouble - The Skull 246 Points, 6 Votes
266 Angel Witch - Angel Witch 227 Points, 4 Votes
279 Diamond Head - Lightning to the Nations 213 Points, 4 Votes
281 Venom - Welcome to Hell 211 Points, 4 Votes
289 Autopsy - Severed Survival 204 Points, 4 Votes

Cool results overall. I would have thought Riot, Anvil, Raven, Loudness, Tygers of Pan Tang and Pagan Altar would have fit in too, but I guess weren't nominated. Had I been around during noms, I would have campaigned for these too:
