(from the Amanda Palmer thread)

Have you ever tangible physical goods to musicians that you were fans of?

Odyssey Dong (how's life), Friday, 14 September 2012 13:10 (8 months ago) Permalink

Could be food, but not if you've brought them back to your house to crash on your floor. Like, if you've brought a lasagne to the venue or something would be okay.

Odyssey Dong (how's life), Friday, 14 September 2012 13:11 (8 months ago) Permalink

I was nicer to my support bands than Amanda Palmer was. I even gave one of them the lovely gold jacket right off my back when she asked for it.

I used to write letters to bands telling them I liked them. My mom used to write fan letters as a teen and she made us write letters to musicians or singers as a kid, it's corny but I did it out of respect for her.

This was when I was a teen or in college, though.

I gave Frank Watkins, at the time the bassist in Obituary, a pretty cool Sonic Youth book with a 45 single called "Sonic Life"

In the area of services, I allowed members of Napalm Death to shower at my house and I am pretty sure I gave vocalist Barney Greenway some Nine Inch Nails CD or two (I worked at TVT Records at the time).

I also gave Mike Patton a Godflesh CD when I worked at RED. It helped to work at a label or distro to do these things, actually, since I was giving away shit I got for free to begin with (or in the case of the SOnic Youth book, paid a small amount).

I unwittingly gave members of Death Angel a small marijuana pipe - it was a promotional item I got from Priority Records for something they released (I forget who it was) and I was showing it off and next thing I know, they say "thanks!" and it is no longer mine. (I don't smoke so it wasn't that big of a deal...)

That happens a lot to people, actually - people are showing off something to a band and they interpret as giving it to them.

Example:

Michael Rother had flu so i went to a spanish supermarket to get him some snacks. He wanted pretzels, but I couldn't work out how to explain that to a non-English speaker. He got some nuts and trail mix instead.

Jamie_ATP, Friday, 14 September 2012 13:28 (8 months ago) Permalink

He was cool with that - no beef.

I gave a copy of my band's demo to Steve West when I saw Pavement.

I gave Eric Bachmann a pen at a Crooked Fingers show. (Actually, I gave him a pen to sign my cd, and then I never saw it again.)

Apologies for taking that wide-open goal, there.

I actually can't think of that much. I, along with my boyfriend of the time, gave one of my American musician friends one of those '70s green lady paintings to take home post tour. I intended to give Julian Cope a dinky toy police car I had as I knew he collected them, but then I never met him in the end. Wrote shitloads of letters to people.

emil.y, Friday, 14 September 2012 17:15 (8 months ago) Permalink

so, in essence, one could say that you did indeed give the drummer some?

Bought a beer for the lead singer of the Czech Republic's biggest indie band on Wednesday. Gave half a pack of sweets to one of Olivia Tremor Control some years ago.

If you count my ex that was in a band when we dated, I gave her lots of stuff. But beyond that, I bought a beer for Jay Bennett at a Reputation gig once (and gave a hug to Elizabeth Elmore at the same show). And in lolcollege I served food to various members of the Poster Children, Blue Meanies, and Hum.

Not quite what's being asked for, but I gave an excessively oversize Celia Cruz t-shirt I bought at one of her shows to a conguero who played live for the jazz samba dance class I used to take (and who I also used to see showing up occasionally with salsa bands, or backing up people singing Cuban standards, etc.).

That's funny. I'm not bragging because my mom is a pain in the ass, but she used to make us listen to rock radio and read the magazines, know all the songs. Now that I'm older I realize a lot of kids didn't have a mom like that, but that's because she liked rock and roll as a teenager and didn't like people forgetting what it was.

See, my mom is an old rock and roller and back then she had religious wackos in her family and remembers when they burned records and it wasn't a "cool" thing with her, it's not like she's some dope smoking hippie, it was more, "religious nuttery is un-American"! And stuff like "there are no Satanic messages" and stuff and how we should play the records to see if there was Satan in them.

I gave Rammellzee a fist bump and bought him a Sapporro tall boy. He thanked me and wandered off gesticulating with the can as he talked but kept it unopened the 20 minutes he was in my vicinity. Second guessed myself that he might be secrete Muslim or a non drinker who was offended but saving me face. A few years later reading the obituaries I was surprised to learn he was a big beer lover.
