Divine Fits - A Thing Called Divine Fits

"Supergroup" / side-project (delete as appropriate depending which you thing is less pejorative) featuring Spoon's Britt Daniel, Wolf Parade's Dan Boeckner and Sam Brown of New Bomb Turks. I don't know Wolf Parade or New Bomb Turks, but I love Spoon, and picked this up today. Basically feels like Spoon with a synth, which is a pretty cool idea to me. Very minimal, very cool, tunes seem pretty good, very satisfying on first contact. Any thoughts / fans?

the reviews turned me off from listening to it

nostormo, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 17:16 (8 months ago) Permalink

Why's that?

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 17:19 (8 months ago) Permalink

the summary of them is: it's an ok record, but not as good as their major bands etc

nostormo, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 17:24 (8 months ago) Permalink

the cover of pre-birthday party birthday party is pretty cool. wonder if they actually scrounged up that record or just saw the youtube.

it's a good record though - different enough from Spoon that a guy who likes Spoon (say, me) can dig it but be getting a different vibe

xp "Shivers" has been a well-loved tune by most every indie cat I know for years, the ones who like Nick Cave anyway

yeah i'm not a big cave acolyte so i have no idea how familiar it was outside of "look at lil nick and pals on youtube"

I've really been enjoying this - I think the Boeckner song that opens it ("My Love is Real") is my favorite.

I think I prefer this to the last Spoon album, and I liked that a lot. Love the Birthday Party song.

I'm a huge Handsome Furs fan so drawn to this but I get the feeling this is more for Spoon fans.

This Wolf Parade guy sounds a lot like Bono. I'm fine with that.

nate woolls, Thursday, 6 September 2012 18:27 (8 months ago) Permalink

album sounds like the Spoon guy and a Wolf Parade guy got together and made an album that sounds like Spoon meets Wolf Parade.

that being said, i like it about as much as Transference and definitely more than the 2 or 3 Spoon albums before that, but not as much as Girls Can Tell and stuff before that.

and i basically lost track of Wolf Parade after that first album, which, every time i listen to it, i remember it's better than i give it credit for.

some good tunes, looser britt daniel than usual, album a little schizo. be interesting to hear a follow-up.

i just found out about this. was hoping for a new Spoon record as the last one came out in January 2010.

will have to investigate, which will start with listening to the YouTube clips above.

This is a fucking great record.

Rumour has it that James Murphy wanted to produce a Spoon record but couldn't cos he was too busy with LCD Soundsystem, and that's part of the reason he folded the group. If he had produced a Spoon record, it'd probably have sounded like this. (It is produced by Nick Launay, so, you know, it might as well be, cos I'm pretty sure JM bites his style hard.)

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 21 September 2012 07:01 (7 months ago) Permalink

I always thought 'You wanted a hit' off the last LCD album sounded like them doing Spoon in a way.

Digging this Divine Fits album as well. Genuinely inspired collaboration from two artists who are super consistent.

yeah i am v much on board with this. boeckner and daniel compliment each other well. it is primarily spoon sounding because of the space but there is a fuzz that drags it a ways in the direction of boeckner's bands.

still conflicting feelings about picking this up - as much as I love the Handsome Furs, Wolf Parade and Spoon have always left me cold

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 21 September 2012 12:24 (7 months ago) Permalink

If Spoon leave you cold, this probably will too, as (from what I know of the others), it's closest to Spoon.

2 weeks pass...

"would that not be nice" is such a good song. i like the rest of the album too but that's the serious jam on here.

Yeah, that's my favourite too.

Britt Daniel is doing an IAmA on Reddit tomorrow.

Still love this record.

i just bought this CD, haven't listen to it quite yet.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 19 December 2012 01:36 (5 months ago) Permalink

I was surprised by the "Shivers" cover, as I hadn't read about the album before playing. Another possible place they found it (which is where I did): Dogs In Space movie, where it appears twice. Actually the song that follows the cover, something to do with ice cream, is pretty good. It's like a slightly less spoon-y production spoon.

dlp9001, Wednesday, 19 December 2012 03:20 (5 months ago) Permalink

This is my album of the year, totally loving it.

Marty8501 (Marty Innerlogic), Wednesday, 19 December 2012 08:43 (5 months ago) Permalink

Great record. It's also belongs in the rare group of albums where side 2 is better than side 1.
