Clean, wistful guitar pop

I'm listening to the new Wild Nothing stream and I find it really great.

Is this sound a little trend now, or am I just late to the party?

Some new records by bands with their own takes on this: Real Estate, DIIV, Lotus Plaza

For those that aren't as into it, does it just sound like another little indie-style-fad to make people in the future go "What is this 2010-2012?" if it sound pops up again?

Thoughts?

Try club 8's "spring came, rain fell"

Might be on the twee-er tip but the thread title brought it to mind.

Oh you're not asking for recommendations I see. But that fits nonetheless!

omar little, Monday, 27 August 2012 03:28 (eleven years ago) link

Well I'm certainly open to them, thanks! I left the thread title general to encourage all comments on the subject.

My fist thought on the matter though was just noticing a trend emerging recently in tidy guitar pop.

Evan, Monday, 27 August 2012 03:34 (eleven years ago) link

subject line describes some of my favorite music ever but i've never herad any of the current bands being discussed so i dunno

some dude, Monday, 27 August 2012 03:35 (eleven years ago) link

difficult for me to think of this as a 'trend' as i don't think bands have ever stopped doing this sort of thing. is it really that much more popular now?

the dilettante escape plan (electricsound), Monday, 27 August 2012 03:36 (eleven years ago) link

Do you see similarities in those few bands I mentioned musically? I feel like I do, and they're all new enough where I grew curious. The trend is a more specific relation the mentioned band in my opinion have, the thread title is the outer layer of similarities I noticed off the bat- not the "trend."

Evan, Monday, 27 August 2012 03:55 (eleven years ago) link

i like those three bands mentioned in the opening post; anything that sounds like the first few Felt lps is good to me. i do tire of all the reverb on the vocals though (DIIV, Lotus Plaza...)

nerve_pylon, Monday, 27 August 2012 03:55 (eleven years ago) link

Like how I saw a little trend 2004 - 2006 of bands that liked bark-y vocalists like Wolf Parade. Or maybe I just thought that was a thing then.

Yeah nerve I agree a little especially on the DIIV record, I really enjoy the sound a lot but by the end of the record I'm sick of the reverb.

Evan, Monday, 27 August 2012 03:59 (eleven years ago) link

To keep discussion alive, any other recommendations of newer bands doing this well in the vein of the 4 mentioned at the top?

Evan, Monday, 27 August 2012 20:01 (eleven years ago) link

Real Estate?

Are you recommending them or confused that I originally included them at the top?

Evan, Monday, 27 August 2012 20:15 (eleven years ago) link

Anything...

Evan, Tuesday, 28 August 2012 01:59 (eleven years ago) link

is this a captured tracks thing? the first band that pops to mind reading the header is minks. i do get a strong felt/early rough trade vibe out of these guys tho i haven't heard that many current bands aping the lighter end of post punk you sort of describe. some twee/C86 action here and there, sure, but that's about it.

cock chirea, Tuesday, 28 August 2012 03:11 (eleven years ago) link

You know I was going to ask if it was a Captured Tracks thing. Seems that way. If it really is mostly them pushing that sound than I'm all for it!

Evan, Tuesday, 28 August 2012 03:16 (eleven years ago) link

This stuff seems pretty nice, but it's all sort of dream-pop for ipad ads, isn't it? I don't even really mean that as an insult, it's just what it makes me think of.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 28 August 2012 03:52 (eleven years ago) link

how is this stuff distinguished from, like, power pop that isn't too overtly '60s retro

some dude, Tuesday, 28 August 2012 03:53 (eleven years ago) link

no power for one

oh ok

some dude, Tuesday, 28 August 2012 03:55 (eleven years ago) link

not interested then, seeya

some dude, Tuesday, 28 August 2012 03:55 (eleven years ago) link

It's not that slick, tipsy... They're at least creating some kind of atmosphere with depth.

Evan, Tuesday, 28 August 2012 05:36 (eleven years ago) link

More like late 80s, some dude. That degree of separation is important here.

Evan, Tuesday, 28 August 2012 05:39 (eleven years ago) link

The thread title made me immediately think of the Vulgar Boatmen and the Volebeats. But those are 90s bands and it seems you want NOW music. If you are cool with the 90s then check out "Drive Somewhere" (http://youtu.be/kop24gtlS8o) and "Somewhere in my heart" (http://youtu.be/NkcnwNdw3tU).

Whoa whoa, if anyone is cool with 90s music I'm your guy.

Evan, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 05:34 (eleven years ago) link

By the way Vulgar Boatmen are incredible, thanks so much!

Evan, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 05:36 (eleven years ago) link

Another Vulgar Boatmen fan = the world is a better place.

Oh man I am just now hearing Wild Nothing and it's hitting a sweet spot for me. Loved the last Real Estate record, too.

Sandy Denny Real Estate (jaymc), Sunday, 9 September 2012 17:01 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah definitely! Just a thought- I was listening to "Shadow" by Wild Nothing and the orchestration gives me a fuzzy Clientele kind of feeling. I like the maturity in the sound of the best of these bands. Maybe it's the lack of angst.

2013 albums in this vein that are doing it for me:

Ducktails (Real Estate offshoot, so no surprise)
Kurt Vile (I think he fits, no?)

jaymc, Monday, 15 April 2013 17:32 (eleven years ago) link

I think I like the earlier Ducktails stuff better, but never gave that new full band stuff much of a chance either. Kurt Vile definitely applies to me. Very much like that new one.

Evan, Monday, 15 April 2013 17:48 (eleven years ago) link

Timely topic as every year I try to compile clean, wistful guitar pop into a spring mix. Great sunny day driving music.

Evan, Monday, 15 April 2013 18:32 (eleven years ago) link

'Ivy Covered House' off the Ducktails album is the song of the year so far IMO.

Real Estate debuted some new tracks for their hometown crowd in Ridgewood on Sunday. It sounds really great to me but I am too big of a fan to fairly critique it.

where does one play a show in Ridgewood, NJ?

Ha! It was supposed to be at the bandshell in the park by the library (like last year) but ominous weather reports forced them to relocate to the middle school. Glenn Mercer Band opened.

Sorry I didn't give any heads up- I found out it was happening day-of via brooklynvegan
