Tired of lumping everyone into the 'Gay Rapper' thread, and if Le1f is big enough for his own dedicated thread, Mykki is also, especially once her proper mixtape drops in October.
'Wavvy' is the first official single from her rap mixtape - 'Join My Militia' and 'Head is a Stone' were both off of the industrial/punk/poetry EP she put out called 'Mykki Blanco & the Mutant Angels'.
It's produced by Brenmar, it bangs, she goes hard and the video came out today:
"What the fuck I gotta prove to a room full of dudes / who ain't listening to my words cause they're staring at my shoes"

when's the gatekeeper collaboration coming out?
― ogmor, Tuesday, 21 August 2012 18:15 (9 months ago) Permalink
The Gatekeeper collab is supposed to be on 'Cosmic Angel' along with a track from Teengirl Fantasy, a couple from Nguzunguzu, Physical Therapy, Sinden, 5kinandbone5, and some other folks.

So, October, I guess? Unless it gets released earlier as a single.
video is gorgeous, if this is indicative of the shift in tone from EP to mixtape then i'm keen. gatekeeper collaboration seems like the sort of maximalist risk that will probably fall flat but has an outside chance of unstoppable greatness

#!
Haze.Boogie.Life video. Love it. Love the spareness of the beat, v. Beez in the Trap. Live for some reason I thought there was a lot more BASS to this, but after the initial shock of how thin the production feels, it's pretty great.

Really like this until all the high-pitched voice tracks at the end.

Is it just me or do those sound like s/he's trying to do Ryan Trecartin? I get the impression one of them ("MB's First Freestyle") is the original Youtube clip that started the project; I really like "Mendecino California" but maybe it dates from the same period.

it's not bad, but not that impressive either.
― UnderControl, Tuesday, 13 November 2012 02:27 (6 months ago) Permalink
And sorry, I'm not trying to be transphobic or, you know, a dick with the "s/he" nomenclature, just not sure if I should use the pronoun for Mykki Blanco or for Michael Quattlebaum for something dating from that point in Mykki-Blanco-as-art-project.

Female pronouns for Blanco, male pronouns for Quattlebaum seems p obvious to me.

srsly. the mixtape is slightly less consistent then i'd like but the first 9 tracks are mostly GREAT and the singles choices/videos have been flawless.
The end of that tape is so bizarre but kind of inspired.
― The Reverend, Saturday, 26 January 2013 20:10 (4 months ago) Permalink
it is, but it doesn't feel of a piece
and i really wish we'd gotten a properly mixed/mastered version of betty rubble (i got the midas touch) because live it fits in REALLY well with the first 8 songs or whatever and on the record it feels like a demo.

If I'd heard Cosmic Angel earlier (d'oh!) I'd definitely have voted for it in the poll. I'm amazed right now, and I'm only seven tracks deep.
