This should be a tougher match-up than round 1. Round 3 will poll all the other, less canonical 1994 albums that you all have nominated.

SAW II

76:14 - like I said on the other thread, I would have chosen SAW85-92 over either but I think I might actually like the Global Communication better.

It's my idiosyncratic opinion that SAW II is massively overrated/nothing all that special. I will rep hard for 76:14 any day of the week, though, and will be sad to see it probably go here.

Is there a thread where all the contenders in this championship are listed?

Saw2

don't know... 76:14 is the better album, but SAWII is so singular... it's almost like a sound effects CD.

EDB, some discussion of what to include happened here:

That answers everything!

What, and the winner went onto round 3?

I guess round three will have three albums in it.

i demand a recount!

I concur, and I didn't vote either.

I think I may have forgotten to vote in my own poll... I probably would've gone with 76:14 as well. But I do think SAWII is utterly singular and covers an impressive range of moods. As its title suggests, its more a collection of vignettes (very memorable ones), whereas 76:14 fits the rockist notion of a proper album. Apples and oranges, for sure.

azaera, Thursday, 16 August 2012 17:43 (9 months ago) Permalink

In that sense, the tied result seems fitting

azaera, Thursday, 16 August 2012 17:43 (9 months ago) Permalink

Not that I don't like it, but SAWII seems not fully formed. And there's more than a couple tracks that I never need to hear again, they grate. 76:12 sounds like someone mic'd my brain when it's in a hypnagogic state. It all flows so effortlessly.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 16 August 2012 17:57 (9 months ago) Permalink

which I guess is ironic considering the manner in which R. James supposedly created SAWII

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 16 August 2012 18:00 (9 months ago) Permalink

For a moment there I was all "Rick James is on SAWII?!"

How did he make it?

And yeah, I'd probably pull it out way more often if it it was nicely edited down to one cd. It's like 2 of the best ambient songs ever, a few great ones, and a whole lot of ehhhh

formerly EDB (ed.b), Thursday, 16 August 2012 18:14 (9 months ago) Permalink

iirc he deprived himself of sleep until he was basically hallucinating/lucid dreaming

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 16 August 2012 18:56 (9 months ago) Permalink

Hallucinating from lack of sleep and lucid dreaming are not at all the same thing.

That said, he had spoken (boasted? lied? who knows!) about using both techniques.

Shepton Mullet (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Friday, 17 August 2012 08:23 (9 months ago) Permalink

that's prob why i listed both of them?

Your grammar is very unclear.
