Ween are often brilliant although I find some of their humour really grating (same with Zappa as it happens).

I know maybe three Primus songs, file under 'Not for Me'.

Don't think I've ever heard Phish but the sleeve for Billy Breathes is the stuff of nightmares.

Yeah, the band really has taken a toll on him, but I think Mickey's been into all the same shit and it doesn't seem to have affected him in the slightest. He did a really good interview here:

I never put anything before Ween. I dedicated twenty-eight years of my life to it. So, I don’t know. It’s common knowledge that Aaron just went away for a long stint in rehab. He’s trying to get himself sober, and get his life on track, and that extends way deeper than just Ween. And I love Aaron, he’s one of my best friends in the world, my whole life. So, I kinda thought, that maybe the band would be on ice for a year, or two, or three, or five, and I was totally cool with that. However long it took for him to be healthy and more importantly happy, I was prepared to do it, and I was going to wait for him to take the lead on it. And the next thing I know I read in Rolling Stone that he said that he was breaking up the band. And I was heartbroken. I still am. It’s only been a month. And I also knew, you shouldn’t make a decision like that, the day you get out of rehab or the week you get out, and I think he regrets it. I don’t think that you’ve seen the last of Ween. I wouldn’t be surprised if we played before the year is over to be honest with you.

think it's just "touring" that is bad for Gene, not the band Ween specifically - his rehab program comes with a sponsor that goes on the road with him on his (ill-fated) solo tour. also cf the noted disaster gig last year, Dean's comments on that, and the time abt six years ago when Deaner pulled an entire months-long tour a few days in bcz of Gene's intake as soon as they hit the road

Yeah, but that’s the norm, and I get it. That’s cool, but that’s one thing. I’m not going to complain. Every time I complain I get kicked in the balls by a million people. That was officially not a complaint. The other thing was, there was this big drama last year. Aaron got too drunk to play in Vancouver, and it got picked up by the wire services and all this. And I was laughing; do you know how many times that’s happened over the years? But that was before shit was going up on Twitter and YouTube and Facebook as quick as someone could hit send on a camera phone. And it’s funny to me that was made such a big deal of, this pivotal moment for Ween. This big crash and burn moment. It was like, God, how many times have we done that? Not even just him. Maybe it was me one time? People were asking me like somebody died? My father called me on tour, “What happened last night?” Nothing, Aaron was fucked up. Like Joe Cocker never fell down on stage from drinking too much? Did no one care? It’s different, but Ween is so old fashioned.
It’s funny because, I actually remember the day that show happened, and I saw the reviews of it. And every publication that covered it, I kind of had the same reaction. Granted that’s odd to happen at a show, that doesn’t necessarily mean anything.
It happened two hours and forty minutes into our set. We’re like forty-four songs into our set. It’s not like we couldn’t play the first song or whatever. It was like, we had put in double the amount of time on stage that most bands put in, and it mostly went all right. It’s not even really worth talking about to be honest with you. It’s just non-anything. It was a big deal and people were pissed and rightfully so. But the amount of attention it got… it wasn’t even stand-out amongst Ween meltdowns. I don’t know if it would even crack the top 10. I’ve crawled under the stage before, like on the first song, freaking out on LSD and then stayed under there until it was safe to come out twenty minutes later.

I've also never heard a Thin Lizzy record despite tons of seeming to love them and telling me I need to. I guess based on the three songs I have heard I don't get what differentiates them from hordes of other 70s classic rock staples - not this is bad, just nothing I've sought out.

Ween live in 1997 was one my favorite shows ever; the first Phish show I saw was at a small theater in 93 and was great but the next three were in progressively bigger venues and got worse every time, partly due to being surrounded by more and more Phish fans.

That said if they happened to play near me this past summer I totally would have gone, fuck the haters.

I realize that they are an Irish band fronted by a black guy which makes them obviously different from, say, Skynrd, but musically what am I missing that makes Jailbreak or The Boys Are Back In Town that much different from all the Seger / BTO / BOC / REO / Aerosmith / Eagles stuff that I heard on the same stations growing up? Enough that a number of different people have passionately talked to me about them being great, people who wouldn't do the same for any of the other bands I listed?

There is nothing wrong with starting with Jailbreak. I honestly haven't heard any BTO or REO albums, but would listen if there was a good one with great deep cuts. Thin Lizzy isn't as inscrutable as BOC. Not as blooooooz as Aerosmith, but way bluesier than the Eagles. Good songwriting. Closest comparison I could think of would be Bruce Springsteen if he wasn't so damn "hey everybody look at me!"

thing is, that's a pretty varied bunch of bands. sure, thin lizzy were heavy 70s rockers, so they fit in pretty comfortably with others of that general ilk, but that isn't a good or bad thing in itself. they've got their own distinct personality and points of appeal (fine musicianship, memorable tunes, evocative lyrics and vocals). same goes for BOC and aerosmith, afaic, though you can have the rest.

but yeah on the real Lizzy is very unique because they were so multi-faceted and blessed with Lynott's voice, how many bands can recall Van Morrison or Springsteen at points and sound like proto-Iron Maiden at points? they straddle the line between metal and hard rock and just rock 'n roll and soul in a unique way....like for example, i'm listening to Live and Dangerous and they just went from a totally swinging stroll through the basically soul song "Dancing the Moonlight" with and extended sax solo from some dude in Graham fucking Parkers' band of all things, then the nexts thing is Massacre which sounds like the roots of NWOBHM
