Where does the line come between funky, jackin and afrobeats? I still don't really understand the differences clearly.

boxedjoy, Thursday, 26 July 2012 17:16 (10 months ago) Permalink

I'm not ignoring this thread btw.

Tim F, Thursday, 26 July 2012 21:21 (10 months ago) Permalink

I don't think afrobeats really has a line (because afrobeats is an umbrella term rather than a genre or scene per se), there could be funky afrobeats and for that matter jackin afrobeats if the artists in question fancy it.

Matt DC, Thursday, 26 July 2012 21:25 (10 months ago) Permalink

Where does the line come between funky, jackin and afrobeats? I still don't really understand the differences clearly.

Well I'm not an expert either but I think it mostly comes down to the different kind of beats. Funky = beats with clave/3:2 type snare patterns at about 130bpm. Jackin = much straighter-sounding beats with the snares on the 2 and the 4 in each bar. I think Jackin tunes tend to be slightly slower too, closer to 120bpm but could well be wrong on this.
Afrobeats is a bit more diverse and harder to pin down. Some of the beat patterns are def similar to Funky, but the genre covers a lot of different types of beats at different tempos. The main thing that marks it out is obv the influence from African music, and a lot tunes have vocals or MCing done in West African accents + patois. That's the other thing that separates it from Funky and Jackin, it's more heavily vocal/song orientated.

40oz of tears (Jordan), Thursday, 26 July 2012 21:36 (10 months ago) Permalink

Terrible names are just a tradition in uk dance music at this stage tbh.

i'm sorry i misunderstood this to be about acid house, not a subgenre of funky

the late great, Thursday, 26 July 2012 22:25 (10 months ago) Permalink

It's not really different to house music (at this stage) - comparable to late 06 / 07 funky in that regard, with different sonic reference points.

Which means it has roughly the same capacity for greatness as you might expect of music "not really different to house music" - quite a lot as it turns out! But I'm not obsessed with it the way I was with funky this time four years ago.

I can't post youtubes at the moment but suffice to say Hannam and Garnett's "you want me" is total top five of the year.

lex pretend, Thursday, 26 July 2012 22:33 (10 months ago) Permalink

afaik 'jackin' house' takes some of the elements of bassline but combines with a more traditional house (or maybe electro-house) palette. it's fun and it reminds me of when producers from the grime/garage/dubstep scenes started fuckin' with house properly and there was a year or so where it felt like that music could really go anywhere.

in my personal exp. the ppl i know who are heavily into uk-centric dance music scenes don't really seem to fuck with house that much (apart from a few uk ppl who are deemed releveant). i attribute this (and i could be totes wrong) to house being so daunting and ~unknowable~ where as grime or garage or whatever is more easily geeked over and fetishised. so for me, when these uk producers open up their sound in this way it is really exciting and opens up so many possibilities.

big fan of that nick hannam ft. tom zanetti track & the nick hannam track that samples robin thicke. there really is very little separating 'you want me' sonically from the house music that is massively popular in london/rest of europe rite now apart from the AWESOME, AWESOME rap. always find it interesting to see on facebook how the tom zanetti raves seem to have hot creations house ppl and big garage names on the same bill.

hardhouse banter (tpp), Thursday, 26 July 2012 22:34 (10 months ago) Permalink

also notwithstanding that several of my favourite dance tracks of the year are based on r&b samples, i am sick to death of listening to new dance songs and hearinga familiar cut-up voice hove into view today

i hear one which sampled "promise" yesterday - i forget where or what, it doesn't matter - and literally turned to yell at the computer. LEAVE CIARA ALONE

lex pretend, Thursday, 26 July 2012 22:35 (10 months ago) Permalink

^ I'll give You Want Me a listen in a bit (got the radio on just now).
I think the main thing that's holding me back with this genre is something like... there's been a few tunes I've heard that I've liked a lot (mostly ones posted on that 'Certified Jacking' youtube channel), but they've seemed like 'exceptions to the rule' kind of tunes, and I don't like being in that kind of relation with a genre. Part of why I fell so hard for funky is that at its peak (for me) I could love the whole breadth of vibes right across the scene. But there's been tonnes of Jackin' tunes that people have showed me and I've just felt like 'nah that's naff' and a lot of them as far as I know are fairly representative of where the sound is at right now.
I'm aware this all sounds like hand-wringing.

After having the owl/ufo bass from 'You Want Me' running in my head for two days straight, I have to say Jackin is growing on me. I think the electro part turned me off initially, but the skippy beats, warpy owl bass, cheeky/cheesy samples, and blatant drugginess on some of these tracks is winning me over.

Astrochimp32, Saturday, 28 July 2012 18:18 (10 months ago) Permalink

I think I like about half of those youtubes. Was vibing quite a bit to Away We Go earlier. A lot of the tunes I like sound a bit like slightly slower, slightly straighter equivalents to the garagey bits DJ Q plays. A lot of this stuff has an enjoyable effortless sort of feel to it. Might try and post more coherent thoughts later, but yeah I'm coming round to it a bit.

Seriously who the hell came up with the name? There's only one kind of jackin house. It's from Chicago and it existed two decades ago. And by jackin they really meant JACKIN. I don't hear any jack here.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 6 June 2013 12:06 (2 weeks ago) Permalink

yeah the 2:31 shows are v good... not wild omg stuff the way jackin nuum hype (or the marcus nasty 2012 sets) implies but a true representation of how the midlands crew puts its spin on today's house n bass sphere. strictly speaking i don't see jackin as really existing any more tbh, at least not the way it did last year

think you'll find as you listen your question on the ukpopbass thread answers itself better than anyone could possibly tell you (within ten thousand words anyway)

r|t|c, Thursday, 6 June 2013 12:24 (2 weeks ago) Permalink

I need to dig deeper and follow those guys more closely, but the midlands house sound, whatever you want to call it, has a druggier, ravier vibe than anything else in UK dance I've heard for a while. This show from the 29th has more echoey, stutter vision, deep house effects circa late 90s early 00s than anything on the pop thread (but also with Bassline inflections)

It is also clear that Hannah Wants has shifted into a slightly more "sophisticated" sound than what she was playing when I checked her mixes out last year. Kind of hope she doesn't go further down that path though. Her mixtape 0513 is pretty much perfect imo.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 6 June 2013 12:45 (2 weeks ago) Permalink

if it happens to be the 5th june one then there's a tune of c&a's at 54 mins or so that is thee very zenith of yr "compulsive broken machine loops", more or less just a clanking 8 bar riddim

on the most recent 12th june they actually premier an official(!) remix of a new newham generals tune and they sound to the grimey manor born. so nice to hear d double on something decent again!

i'm just getting round to the second hour of 12th june now, left it at the newgens track

the best periods of these last couple of shows have been when they just get their heads down and do banging driving in-the-pocket house sets (like what normals think of jackin i suppose) only with the current tools at hand. very exciting, makes me want to get a gym membership

also their occasional throwback record of the week slot is invariably excellent and cratediggy, i must go back thru and note them all down

the funny thing about these sets is that for me they've rekindled my enthusiasm for jackin (well, belief in its agency rather) but also made me surer than ever that viewing jackin as some wild isolated sui generis tribe is totally the wrong way to gain any meaningful purchase on it

Yes, I've struggled with the question of whether enjoying jackin' in the context of, say, a DJ Q set, is getting a misreading on it the same way I would have considered to be the case for someone approaching funky via Oneman or whoever. Like, is there something inherently point-missing about the polystylistic pick'n'mix appraoch?

Obv. a key difference is the nature/character/context of the person doing the picking and mixing. But it also just feels like jackin' itself is less interested in constructing its own soundworld, is more open to and curious about the world around it, forms a cluster of intensity within a broader disseminated vibe-chain rather than establishing its own nation-state-of-vibe.

Tim F, Wednesday, 19 June 2013 23:06 (Yesterday) Permalink

yeah like i mean take for instance 'jack' playing now, at first you think oh right it's 'jack' big tune on the scene etc etc. but listen closer and isn't the crucial kinda weirdly queasy animal groaning that makes the track (counterintuitively not erotic at all in juxtaposition with the vocal) such a move totally at home amongst jackin - absolutely not appropriated by in dialogue, but something already there that jackin waxes and wanes on as it suits it

r|t|c, Wednesday, 19 June 2013 23:20 (Yesterday) Permalink

and after that the same taiki & nulight mix of ray foxx that dj q played just to underline the point
