how good ARE they????

donna (donna), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 01:31 (10 years ago) Permalink

is it just me or did that whole hype machine just grind to a halt as soon as people actually heard the album?

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 01:41 (10 years ago) Permalink

It's not just you. You try living in Australia - horrible scenes, man.

Charlie (Charlie), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 01:44 (10 years ago) Permalink

ps third album will probably be great tho...

Charlie (Charlie), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 01:45 (10 years ago) Permalink

But we need to pretend to like all these crap garageland bands until the Hives get their third album out.

B:Rad (Brad), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 01:48 (10 years ago) Permalink

uhhh, haven't The Hives already had, like, four albums? I know one's a comp, but still...

Charlie (Charlie), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 01:53 (10 years ago) Permalink

The Vines have one, incredibly slick, album featuring several rubbish rock tracks that have been / will be released as singles, quite a few rather good pop songs, all minus the raw charm that made the demo recording of 'Factory' so appealing. Live they are a contrived, charmless shambles with too much goddamn vocal reverb.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 02:02 (10 years ago) Permalink

Plus I hate stoners, so the singer comes across as a pathetic excuse for a human being.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 02:11 (10 years ago) Permalink

is the "factory" demo available (officially)? I've heard so many people go on about it - it's a charming slice of Supergrassian whimsy - but only heard the album version.

Actually, I think they opened with it when I saw them in April but I can't really remember that.

Charlie (Charlie), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 02:15 (10 years ago) Permalink

It's on the 7" they did for Rex Records. They chose not to play it for many of their shows in Australia.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 02:18 (10 years ago) Permalink

Sunshinin' is ok. It's the only song on the album that's even close to good.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 05:54 (10 years ago) Permalink

Young rock band with "The" in name = you know the drill.

Fun recent game in the newspapers - seeing their non-pop writers trying to sound knowledgeable on the 'latest trend' by airily mentioning eg "The Strokes, The Streets, The Hives..."

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 06:31 (10 years ago) Permalink

Greatest band ever: The Whive Stropes.

Nate Patrin, Tuesday, 24 September 2002 06:48 (10 years ago) Permalink

The Vines seem to be an excuse to let rock writers give their Nirvana fixation some exercise. Blarg.

Ess Kay (esskay), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 06:54 (10 years ago) Permalink

At least Kurt Cobain could sing live without the use of sheets of reverb.

Craig Nicholls is a scum-sucking excuse for a human being, who seems to think that pretending to be a severe depressive is perfectly acceptable PR.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 08:32 (10 years ago) Permalink

No, don't download at all. Dom is right, Craig Nicholls deserves to have his voice box removed with a rusty coathanger.

They're only barely better than Silverchair because at least their singles are short meaning the pain is over quickly.

There's no way back from the darkside now. If it's confession time I'll admit to liking the vocal version of Cosmos-Take Me With You.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 12:04 (10 years ago) Permalink

Craig Nicholls and the Vines on Letterman had to be about the best television appearance of a musical act that i've seen in ages. Not since the black-biker-leathered PJ Harvey completely disrupted the Johnny Carson Tonight Show have i seen a more electric performance. Drugged up or not, i'll buy Highly Evolved simply for props.

All those pansy wannabe punkers au d'jour can sod off, quit posing, and start thinking about some energy again...

hahaha tom is right on when he talks about the fun game of band name dropping by those who have obv. heard maybe half a strokes song.

i want to know how many tapes of the 'in bloom' and 'come as you are' videos the lead singer wore through before he perfected his crash-into-the-drums routine.

The Vines don't sound like Stone Temple Pilots. The Vines probably wish they could write as many catchy songs, however.

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 19:30 (10 years ago) Permalink

The Vines are really one of the least interesting bands Australia has to offer at the moment. They're not even their management's best band. Try Rocket Science or Youth Group instead (both far, far superior bands)..

Hives>Vines any fuckin' day, for suits, ties and crazy grin alone.
Hives: antics enhance music/performance.
Vines: antics try haplessly to supplement putrid lack of music/performance quality.

Revive...

Fuck knows why, cos I've never had any love for The Vines, but I've just come into possession of the new album Winning Days, and I'm slightly chastened to say it's not the execrable pile of wankshite I was expecting. In all recent interviews, Craig has come across as vaccuous, dangerously ill-informed and just plain desperate and sad, but I'm halfway through the album and have as yet had no Stereophonics-like Pavlovian urge to press stop and throw the damn thing out of the window. Sure, it's no u-turn musically - vaguely Beatlesy melodies/harmonies with the occasional burst of wasn't-Kurt-great dynamics, lyrics about absolutely fuck-all - hell, they've not even bothered to pretend they're reinventing the wheel *again*, but...oh bloody hell, it's ok, y'know?

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned the new album before now. Perhaps they've been written offf due to Nichols's arseishness. Thoughts?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 12:02 (9 years ago) Permalink

the guitar tone on the new single is the worst i've ever heard on a studio recording. whoever produced it is either cloth eared or a fucking pansy-ass who can't stand up to nicholls/the record company/the management

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 12:04 (9 years ago) Permalink

seriously, is it so hard to get a guitar to not sound like a 16-year old in his bedroom playing a squier through a peavey?

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 12:06 (9 years ago) Permalink

I started to worry about how much they owe their label after watching their Michel Gondry-directed video last night. That and Craig Nicholls' insurance premia must be breaking their bank

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 12:12 (9 years ago) Permalink

their last album sold a respectable amount, not as much as Jet though. ha! melbourne beats sydney yet again

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 12:12 (9 years ago) Permalink

Yeah, but they're not from a part of Sydney espoused by anyone else, they're from *The Shire*. You won't find any Surry Hills/Glebe/Newtown/etc inhabitant claiming ownership of The Vines or basking in any reflected glory they might find, any more than you'd find anyone in Brunswick banging on about how Jet are "their" band, surely?

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 12:23 (9 years ago) Permalink

Don't worry, nobody would ever be stupid enough to think that Melbournians were proud of Jet (except for JJJ listeners).

Australian ILMers need to have a day of local band shame, a day in which we apologise for crap local bands getting big: Brisbane=Powderfinger, Sydney=The Vines, Melbourne=Jet, & Perth=The John Butler Trio.

I've already done my bit by hiroshimaing the drummer from Butterfly Effect when I was a teenager - so I have no guilt when it comes to them.

Eh -- I liked a few of the songs on the first album. Admittedly, the singer is a dolt, but at times he can be quite entertaining.
I remember an interview in which he stated that he wanted a statue on his grave of David Gahan, shirt flapping in the breeze, inscribed "Sleep Well, My Dark Angel" (= classic).

We'll see, eh?

http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1493980/20041119/vines_the.jhtml

it's kinda weird that everyone always (jokingly?) talked about how he acted/looked like a retard and that it was probably a put-on and then it turns out that apparently he does have an autistic disorder. although I think at the time of that announcement a lot of people speculated that it was another put-on because it was brought up in a court trial.

Actually if "challenging" is Dave Grohl's musical goal, that might explain why he released an acoustic version of "Times Like These." It's harder to get through than Myst or what the fuck ever.
