there are like fifteen no doubt threads but none explicitly c/d so i thought i'd make a thread for this song because it RULES

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 17 July 2012 14:58 (10 months ago) Permalink

it's 2012 and we can release a 6 minute single with a dub outro

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 17 July 2012 14:58 (10 months ago) Permalink

awesome

mizzell, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 15:34 (10 months ago) Permalink

sounds a surprising lot like no doubt

contenderizer, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 15:41 (10 months ago) Permalink

sounds like one of the blander deep cuts off Rock Steady tbh

lol the shot a minute in where i'm like "oh no Gwen is smuggling one of the Harajuku girls in her truck, look out guys it's a SOLO RECORD!"

some dude, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 15:49 (10 months ago) Permalink

this is terrible

the vocals sound like they were put on the wrong song

Yeah and I ~obstruction~ you/ya fucking blind cunt (pause) fucking k (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 17 July 2012 15:54 (10 months ago) Permalink

that's the patented "gwen stefani sound"

some dude, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 15:56 (10 months ago) Permalink

This is one of the few cases where I'll say that the band who made a singer famous is absolutely holding him/her back now.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 16:47 (10 months ago) Permalink

from what? getting together pharrell and trying to take the night back from ke$ha?

some dude, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 17:11 (10 months ago) Permalink

I don't know what she'd do, but it would be different and likely better than this.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 17:12 (10 months ago) Permalink

lol no it wouldn't, did you forget about "Rich Girl" already

PITILESS LIVE SHOW (DJP), Tuesday, 17 July 2012 17:13 (10 months ago) Permalink

"Rich Girl" is kind of silly, but I'll go to bat for L.A.M.B. as a whole.

prefer rock steady to any solo gwen or previous no doubt

contenderizer, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 17:18 (10 months ago) Permalink

I like both of her solo albums pretty uniformly. Haven't liked a No Doubt track since "Ex-Girlfriend".

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 17:19 (10 months ago) Permalink

i think she's been good for at least a couple good songs and a lot of smh for pretty much album with or without the band, but Rock Steady prob had the highest ratio of the former over the latter

some dude, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 17:19 (10 months ago) Permalink

also I would like to remind ppl that Gwen released this as the lead single to her second solo album:

now let me be clear: I LIKE GWEN STEFANI AND I LIKE NO DOUBT

let's not pretend like she is an immaculate singles artist, tho

PITILESS LIVE SHOW (DJP), Tuesday, 17 July 2012 17:21 (10 months ago) Permalink

in fact, the borderline self-sabotaging streak that runs through some of her single choices is one of the most endearing things about her

PITILESS LIVE SHOW (DJP), Tuesday, 17 July 2012 17:22 (10 months ago) Permalink

this post has popped into my head regularly at the sight of gwen stefani for over 10 years now:

Wyndham Earl wrote this on thread No Doubt's Hey Hey Baby as paen to anal sex? on board I Love Music on Jan 31, 2002
it IS isn't it? the way she slaps her arse and wiggles her eyebrows suggestively at every mention of 'the boys get the girls in the *back*'. and that mock-horrified look at the end of the video..

i actually find gwen stefani to be the unfathomable woman in the universe. i just don't fucking understand her at all, can't work it out. from that coy ultra ultra girliness to those REALLY ODD gestures and facial expressions she makes in her videos.

it's like trying to talk to Lassie. WHAT IS SHE TRYING TO COMMUNICATE?

it's like the woman in the red dress in Fire Walk With Me. whatthefuck??!?

some dude, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 17:25 (10 months ago) Permalink

hahahahaha yes

PITILESS LIVE SHOW (DJP), Tuesday, 17 July 2012 17:26 (10 months ago) Permalink

wtf, I like "Wind It Up" (and did when it was new)

"wind it up" rules

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 17 July 2012 17:52 (10 months ago) Permalink

i have very mixed feelings about "wind it up" but i like it more than i don't

new no doubt single otoh is kinda eh

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 17 July 2012 17:53 (10 months ago) Permalink

yeah "Wind It Up" grew on me

some dude, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 17:56 (10 months ago) Permalink

outfits and hairstyles may have changed but wow these guys do not appear to have aged a day in 15 years.

Roz, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 18:05 (10 months ago) Permalink

No Doubt's drummer is having almost as much trouble accepting that he's too old for guyliner as Green Day's drummer is, though

some dude, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 18:07 (10 months ago) Permalink

They actually shot this video in 1999. No Doubt is a long term project.

Also, they're sitting on 40-50 other videos that will turn up periodically well into the 2040s.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 18:08 (10 months ago) Permalink

I like "Wind It Up" too but it's an insane choice for a lead single

PITILESS LIVE SHOW (DJP), Tuesday, 17 July 2012 18:09 (10 months ago) Permalink

there is like ONE angle you see Gwen from at a few points in the video that makes me think oh she's starting to look a little "old" but by that i mean over 30 and not over 40 like she ridiculously actually is (xpost)

some dude, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 18:10 (10 months ago) Permalink

i'll rep for l.a.m.b as a 90% stellar pop album, albeit one that can be blamed for a lot of the worst things about pop subsequently. stefani's second album was strange, there really seemed to be so little effort put into it - it was like a bunch of random shitty cast-offs she found while tidying the studio one day, plus one unexpectedly great ballad ("early winter"). "wind it up" is an embarrassment.

i only like a handful of no doubt songs but i LOVE those ("hella good" and "don't speak" and er um i think that's it). i'm not feeling this on first listen really, it might grow on me.

bitch I'm on the 242 (lex pretend), Tuesday, 17 July 2012 18:12 (10 months ago) Permalink

ok the dub outro might be the only thing I like about this right now.

Roz, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 18:20 (10 months ago) Permalink

it's def the best part

some dude, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 18:23 (10 months ago) Permalink

I'm amazed by how much I like this!

boxedjoy, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 22:25 (10 months ago) Permalink

It's interesting to compare it to what Garbage (probably their closest contemporaries in terms of pop-not-pop bands still clinging on) are doing with their comeback.

boxedjoy, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 22:26 (10 months ago) Permalink

diplo has done a track for them featuring busy signal it seems

call me crazy but i could kinda go for basically a major lazer album with gwen on

kind of par for her solo career no? it was her first top 10 single since rich girl a year before and hollaback girl right before that. at that point 'insanity' was basically her entire thing.

Don't like this band, but I like this song. I have no problem with the group being back.

Suddenly had a flashback to seeing Tony Kanal's supergroup stint with Perry Farrell and Nuno Bettencourt! Lol at wiki's sendoff: "Perry Farrell now remains the only permanent member."

Three for one sale on the hair bleach for the No Doubt crew eh?
This song is better than I expected it would be. Pretty fun!
I really liked "Wind It Up" – Lonely Goatherd sample! But the rest of that album was too boring to go on. I'd really loved LMAB too

No Doubt is a case of a band having enthusiasm and the right influences but produces second-rate product. Like, these guys' music sounds like they don't think much.
