So yeah, "99 Red Balloons" and all that and I just kept thinking 'one hit wonder' for no good reason without considering what else they might have but DJP and ENBB are showing me the error of my ways on the Cure Top poll thread. Thus, among other things:

I keep forgetting about "Nur geträumt", I don't really know why

Nur Getraumt is amazing. Irgendwie, Irgendwo, Irgendwann is very good too.

TBH Nur geträumt is one of my top 10 all time favorite songs. She recorded it again in the early 2000s but it was not nearly as good.

Oh once when I was visiting my aunt and uncle in Germany I bought a Nena CD and was telling my aunt about how much I loved her and that I was excited to have found this particular CD and my aunt was very confused and after a good five minutes of back and forth broken English (hers) and German (mine) we figured out she thought I'd been talking about Nina Hagen.

Aerosmith is absolutely correct.

Nope. Wrong.

Might be pushing it a little but she definitely helped popularise the NDW sound.

Casually tossing Falco into an article about the German New Wave scene (and xhuxk does it with slightly more awareness than most) is like tossing Rush into a discussion of hard rock bands from Detroit.

Three Word Username, Thursday, 7 June 2012 18:48 (11 months ago) Permalink

Well, maybe if Rush were from Windsor. (Anyway, yeah, I'm well aware Falco's from Austria. But he sang in German, and his career depended on Germany -- when you're talking hits in the U.S., I'd say that's close enough. It would've been weird to leave him out.)

xhuxk, Thursday, 7 June 2012 19:12 (11 months ago) Permalink

I assume, xhuxk, you know about this thing. Saw it many years ago, still surprised they did an English dub for it:

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 7 June 2012 19:18 (11 months ago) Permalink

And hey, if anyone wants to see it!

Not the dub, sadly.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 7 June 2012 19:20 (11 months ago) Permalink

Falco sang in a Viennese dialect that's incomprehensible to a lot of, maybe even most, Germans. He also came out of the vibrant Austropop (that phrase, which is now used as a marketing gag for any music of Austrian origin, used to mean a very specific sing-songwriter rock scene, sung in dialect) scene as a bassist with the Hallucination Company, and most of his songs (including Der Komissar) were about the Viennese drug scene. Vienna's about 6 hours by car to the nearest German city that's even one third as big as it is. Some suburb.

Three Word Username, Thursday, 7 June 2012 20:17 (11 months ago) Permalink

I mean it's legit to talk about Falco as part of a brief flare-up of receptivity to German-language pop in the 80s, but he had nothing to do with the so-called Neue Deutsche Welle -- which was a fake construct of the record companies, anyway (I'd refer people to Jürgen Teipel's book Verschwende deine Jugend, but it will never be available in English, which is a shame.)

Three Word Username, Thursday, 7 June 2012 20:20 (11 months ago) Permalink

And his producers were Dutch.

6 months pass...

Aerosmith is wrong, wrong, sadly misguidedly wrong. Aerosmith the band are, were always have been a spile of steaming turd.
