Download & Listen to COMP TOGETHER - ILX Covers The Beatles (Available Now!)

The Bee Gees made their own version of Sgt. Pepper. Then there was that weird collection of Beatles covers called All This And WWII. Booker T. & The M.G.s covered Abbey Road and who can forget Tiffany's version of "I Saw Him Standing There".

Now, it's ILX's turn.

Beginning on June 1, the 35th anniversary of the release of Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, we'll start accepting claims for an ILX compilation of Beatles covers tentatively titled ILX Covers The Beatles. The deadline for song claiming will be Dec. 1. Tracks will be accepted until Jan. 1, 2013. The release of this compilation is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, which would have been George Harrison’s 70th birthday.

_______________________________________________________________________

Here are the rough guidelines:

• Like other ILX comps, send your song as an MP3, WAV or FLAC. If you would rather work out some sort of dropbox deal, let me know in an email. The email address for all correspondence is ilx.beatles.compATgmailºcom.

• Unlike other comps where we claim our songs in this overview thread, let’s keep the songs we’re covering private. That way, when we release the comp, it can be a big surprise. I’ve got grandiose plans of releasing two versions - one in which the tracks are separated and named, and one “LOVE” version, where all tracks are mixed together into one big beautiful monstrosity.

Send me the name of the song you want to do as well as a second and third choice. First come, first served. I'll get back with you on what's been taken/not taken.

And if you let loose with which song you’re going to do, no worries. You’re just not going to get any revelations from me.

• As I said, we’ll start taking dibs on songs beginning on June 1. Let’s do it at 1400 GMT that day. That’s 7 a.m. San Francisco time, 10 a.m. at the Ed Sullivan Theater, 3 p.m. in Liverpool and midnight, June 2, in Sydney. Any claims on songs before then will not be accepted.

• Only songs performed by the Beatles and released originally by the Beatles will be accepted. No Badfinger, no Wings, no Wilburys, no “Besame Mucho”. If the song you want to cover is “Twist & Shout”, that’s fine since it was released on Please Please Me. I would encourage submissions to be written by Lennon, McCartney, Harrison or Starkey, but if the group thought it was a good idea to release their version of “Boys”, then who can I be to say we shouldn’t either.

Even though Anthology was an official release, I’d prefer we stay away from songs such as “All Things Must Pass” or “Teddy Boy” which were released later as a solo effort.

Looking forward to hearing comments. Yeah yeah yeah!

June 1 is soon enough to get started, but you have until Dec. 1 to pick a song (if you can get it done in a busy month.)

Only reason to be picky about when to start accepting dibs is to be fair to both sides of the Atlantic. I don't want a bunch of Britishes upset at some dumb Arkansas guy for accepting the first claims at 000 GMT.

But that said, the Beatles did land in Arkansas once for refueling. They installed a statue in Walnut Ridge to commemorate the event.

Today was the first time I ever actually bothered to look up that Beatles statue. It kinda bothers me because the band landed up there in 1965 or '66, long before they grew their hair out and started walking across streets.

How about Beatle-composed Anthology songs that released during the Beatles' tenure, but by other artists?

Is it really a good idea to be running two ILX comps at once? Can you not wait a bit?

Seems like when ILX does 2 at once, neither happens.

Dixie Narco Martenot (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Thursday, 24 May 2012 05:52 (1 year ago) Permalink

ok, I've read the first post now.

Mark G, Thursday, 24 May 2012 05:58 (1 year ago) Permalink

So firstly, I shall put my claim in June 1st in private, I shall see about getting a mod to edit my first post here.

And also it'll be well away from being run at the same time as the current one, any road up.

Mark G, Thursday, 24 May 2012 06:01 (1 year ago) Permalink

I'm up for it too. Have ideas of songs and doubt anyone would fight me for it / them.

Rob M Revisited, Thursday, 24 May 2012 06:10 (1 year ago) Permalink

Argh see now I'm going to get the anxiety that everyone else is choosing the song I would want to do.

There's such a narrow range of songs that would even fit me and I imagine it's the off the beaten track songs that will go first.

Dixie Narco Martenot (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Thursday, 24 May 2012 06:37 (1 year ago) Permalink

I can imagine the queue for "get one of those for your trousers" will be longer than the queue for "Hey Jude"

Mark G, Thursday, 24 May 2012 06:41 (1 year ago) Permalink

I should have put quotes around "off the beaten track."

It's just that there are really only 1 or 2 songs I'd want to do, and I'd be gutted if I lost out to someone who was all just "I h8 the Beatles & their cultural domination so I'm just going to pick this one to wreck it."

Because yeah yeah I hate the cultural domination and critical supremacy of the Beatles but some of their songs are so beautiful, especially when they catch me unaware.

Oh, I am conflicted. I should sit this thread out.

Dixie Narco Martenot (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Thursday, 24 May 2012 06:48 (1 year ago) Permalink

Wow, what a cool idea. Yeah, I want to do this. Gonna start thinking about my top three picks! Bravo pplains.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 24 May 2012 07:26 (1 year ago) Permalink

WCC, hopefully the June 1 starting gun at a particular time helps in getting you the song you want. I really don't imagine getting 90 submissions all at once there.

But to be fair to anyone else who would have wanted to do those two songs as well, I think this is fair. At least it's daylight in most of ILX-land.

And I know we've got the Animal Collective comp running now too. Anyone is welcome to forget about this project until that's over. Remember, you've got six months to even claim a song and almost eight months to record it.

pplains, Thursday, 24 May 2012 13:56 (1 year ago) Permalink

Just adding this again since I really should have made it bold in the OP:

• As I said, we’ll start taking dibs on songs beginning on June 1. Let’s do it at 1400 GMT that day. That’s 7 a.m. San Francisco time, 10 a.m. at the Ed Sullivan Theater, 3 p.m. in Liverpool and midnight, June 2, in Sydney. Any claims on songs before then will not be accepted.

In a week, this will be a moot point anyway.

Hey yeah, I didn't realise how long the submission period was when I was worried about not being able to finish the other compilation. That's plenty long enough to finish the other one before starting this.

ARGH WHY YOU GOTS TO THROW TIME ZONES INTO IT THO I can never get my head around time zones. We're in British Summer Time now, right? Argh. Pressure.

I think I've found two alternate songs but I just have no way of judging how popular things are among the ILX compilation crowd. Not that I would plan on doing either of these songs, but we seem like the kind of people where several people would fight over Rain but no one would be interested in doing Strawberry Fields.

so hows this gonna work? you keep receiving submissions until the entire catalog is full or until 1/1/13, which ever comes first?

billstevejim, Thursday, 24 May 2012 20:02 (1 year ago) Permalink

Or is it like, one submission per ILX username?

billstevejim, Thursday, 24 May 2012 20:08 (1 year ago) Permalink

I'm prolly not gonna do this, but I was just wondering.

billstevejim, Thursday, 24 May 2012 20:08 (1 year ago) Permalink

Yeah, for now, we're just going to take one submissions per ILX user. No socks.

Beginning June 1, I'll take submissions at ilx.beatles.compatgmaildotcom. (Trying to avoid setting off the email filter here.)

From then until Dec. 1, you can stake your claim on what title you're recording. You have until 1/1/13 to submit the finished track.

I don't know off the top of my head how many Beatles songs we're talking about here. At least 120. If we get anything close to that before 12/1, I'll certainly alert everyone on this thread. I will also likely shit my pants.

So if we clear your submission a week from tomorrow, you record it and get it ready over the weekend, and then send it to me on Monday, June 4, you're good.

If we clear your submission on 11/30 and you have it back to me by 12/31, then again, we're good.

You don't have to claim your song on June 1 and you don't have to wait until 1/1 to send it in. The only incentive to get in your stakes early is to take advantage of the "first-come, first-serve" procedure here.

I'm going to add a track to this, but I'm going to wait until the last minute, so I don't claim a song over anyone else.

pplains, Thursday, 24 May 2012 20:10 (1 year ago) Permalink

I would love to hear multiple versions of the same song, myself.

Trey Imaginary Songz (WmC), Thursday, 24 May 2012 20:13 (1 year ago) Permalink

no medleys or intra-beatles mashups allowed then? like elanor rigby lyrics over daytripper riff?

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 24 May 2012 20:16 (1 year ago) Permalink

If multiples exist, they must be performed in different keys. You know, to keep it interesting for the listener. Get those capos warmed up.

andrew m., Thursday, 24 May 2012 20:16 (1 year ago) Permalink

I agree that multiple versions would sound cool, but I'm more interested in covering a lot of ground, seeing what songs get taken first, and how it's going to sound when it's put all together. You really want to hear six versions of "Helter Skelter" in that Love mix?

But that said, if someone wants to go all Beatallica and throw in a few riffs from other songs into their mix, that's cool. Lord knows the Beatles themselves pulled that trick a couple of times. Just as long as it's under the umbrella of one song title.

So yeah. No one gets to claim Stars on 45.

I have a Beatles cover I made 20 years ago, one of the few surviving tapes I have from that long ago, that I just listened to for the first time in eons. I recalled it being a rather dull, straightforward cover. I forgot it featured a cheap vintage keyboard simulating a guitar and a Roland 808 in lieu of Ringo. Would you all rather have this or a newly made recording?

I was real tempted to sequence it in order of appearance on their respective albums -- have WYWY start "side 2", hide "Her Majesty" as an untitled track.

But with both Tomorrow Never Knows and Good Night on there, I got thrown off that idea and just went in order of release. Still came out pretty cool. We can thank serendipity for that one.

It's funny how nobody, other than the peerless Paul MarioCartney, took on a really big track. Three from the Blue Album, nothing from the Red Album. Only one single.

I know this is ILM, but if you released the originals it'd make for a pretty obscure Beatles comp for a lot of people.
