Currently no threat to the Bowie record unless the lurkers show up in droves. Get those ballots in!

so excited for the results thread

They're a band where I think no matter how the results shake out, I'll enjoy the hell out of the process.

JAGGER IS COMING

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 30 March 2012 16:54 (twelve years ago) link

voted. yowza that was hard. probably leaned more towards greatest hits than deep cuts, really. the greatest hits are great!

tylerw, Friday, 30 March 2012 16:58 (twelve years ago) link

they surely are

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 30 March 2012 16:58 (twelve years ago) link

i definitely voted for some deep cuts but even some of their album tracks feel like ubiquitous timeless standards so it's a blurry line

Eisbaerg Slim (some dude), Friday, 30 March 2012 17:00 (twelve years ago) link

yeah at this point, nothing from Sticky Fingers really feels like a "deep cut"...

tylerw, Friday, 30 March 2012 17:05 (twelve years ago) link

I think I ended up with like, 5 Sticky Fingers tracks.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 30 March 2012 17:06 (twelve years ago) link

only 4 for me, but i really could've voted for all of 'em.

tylerw, Friday, 30 March 2012 17:08 (twelve years ago) link

this is too hard and everyone else is way more into this catalog than I am, gonna refrain from voting

weird!

tylerw, Friday, 30 March 2012 17:10 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, that's far less offensive than the zipper cover.

Shakey, don't be a crybaby. RIP THE BANDAID. We need you!

In re "Connection," it was in contention for me but I ended throwing my BtB deep-cut vote to "Something Happened to Me Yesterday."

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Friday, 30 March 2012 17:14 (twelve years ago) link

gripe, grumble, grudge

ffs there is no excuse for not voting, seriously

Just half of Bridges to Babylon, all of A Bigger Bang, and a buncha heartache then I'll be ready to go. I'm just gonna have to abandon the 60s stuff. It's probably rubbish anyway.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 30 March 2012 17:16 (twelve years ago) link

That makes two of us. Would rule if it made the final results.

Dancing with Mr. T (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 30 March 2012 17:17 (twelve years ago) link

there's just vast swathes of their catalog I haven't listened to and, frankly, don't feel like investigating right now - and everything I like is obvious and gonna get voted for anyway so eh whatever

voted for 0 sticky fingers tracks. probably should have voted for brown sugar, but figured the hot rocks voters would cover that base for me. "sway" and "dead flowers" came very close for me, but we've talked abt that upthread.

? Ah right xp, BtB can also refer to Between the Buttons

Ismael Klata, Friday, 30 March 2012 17:20 (twelve years ago) link

Ismael your ballot gives me stomach cramps but I love you dearly so I can't shout at you

Aw shucks, it's all mutual

Ismael Klata, Friday, 30 March 2012 17:22 (twelve years ago) link

plus you still have years of good will with me from doing the fiction poll

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 30 March 2012 17:23 (twelve years ago) link

roger noted VOODOO LOUNGE on my albums pallot (and 2 songs from it on my tracks ballot) and said i should defend it itt. i think it's aged really well, at least compared to anything since or a decade or so beforehand.

Eisbaerg Slim (some dude), Friday, 30 March 2012 17:23 (twelve years ago) link

My 80s-and-beyond shortlist is at 21 tracks already btw, I'm still gonna have some weeding to do xp

Voodoo Lounge is really, really good btw, it made this morning a joy.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 30 March 2012 17:25 (twelve years ago) link

Something went a bit wrong mid-80s though, Dirty Work is almost a write-off. I think it's the drum sound.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 30 March 2012 17:27 (twelve years ago) link

btw i didn't mean "explain yourself!" or nothin'... just, without commenting on any ballots I can say that going in I expected the real Big Reveal in the album results to be #5 and it's cool to see the love get spread around. I can't say I voted for it, but it's the last record where it felt like the Stones managed a few minutes of relevance. Like, that Fincher vid was all over the MTV.

imma get sincere for a sec and say, see, this is why you SHOULD vote. your idiosyncratic experience of the catalog as someone who Loves Music is at least as valuable as any imagined Expert Assessment.*

...

*or at least, this is the rationale by which I allowed myself to cut a ton of classic and historically significant and Important stuff off my ballot in favor of tracks that for whatever reason have mattered deeply to me at various times in my life.

^^^^^^

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 30 March 2012 17:42 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, i didn't let being unfamiliar with "vast swathes" of their catalog (well most anything post 1980?) stop me from voting.

tylerw, Friday, 30 March 2012 17:42 (twelve years ago) link

I was super-intimidated going in bc everyone was talking about songs and albums I didn't know. I tried to get down with a couple of albums I hadn't heard, that yielded maybe 1 song that i would vote for...but most of them were songs that had already burrowed their way in, and fuck it, there's nothing wrong with that.

follow your heart shakey! <3

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 30 March 2012 17:44 (twelve years ago) link

it goes beyond anything post-1980 tho. don't think I've ever listened to the entirety of Between the Buttons or Aftermath, for ex. or Goat's Head Soup. Or It's Only Rock n Roll... I mean I have a *bunch* of Stones stuff but there's all kinds of things I never bothered to track down/sort out (their pre-70s catalog is a mess - almost as bad as the Kinks!) and I mean does Brown Sugar really need any more votes etc
