When you opened for us (Transport to Summer) at Middlebury, did you manage to get the furniture tower all the way to the ceiling? When we left, you'd gotten it about 2/3 of the way there. I think I heard they've since banned all bands from that room...maybe the "Sanchez presentation" had something to do with it...

That's a well-written review, but I'm really thrown by the 6/10 rating. The review certainly reads much more positive than that rating indicates.

Rated O might be favorite thing this year. Might. It's a sprawling monster, but after repeated listens things really start to form a clear shape. Um and you know...doobage and stuff.

Clash's policy indicates that 6 is actually a pretty good rating. It didn't get higher cos from a personal viewpoint I don't think of it as a "listen to it every day" album.

I'd give it a 7 (love "Brownout in Lagos," don't hear anything on the rest of the album that even comes close; you can let it play through but it's really long.) Favorite albums by them are still Steel Rod EP and Each One Teach One.

I think that Secret Wars(one folowing EOTO) is somewhat slept on.
I very much prefer Oneida in full on Krautpunk mode to Oneida playing songs, but I've always been most appreciative of the live experience, too.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 23 July 2009 14:45 (fourteen years ago) link

^^^^ This, on all accounts. I can see why n/a might not feel this as much as the more "song-y" stuff, but for me these guys have morphed right into the direction I like best.

Jamie_ATP, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 23:15 (fourteen years ago) link

i should probably mention when they play at ATP New York in a few weeks they're basically going to be performing for a whole day, improvising with members of other bands playing the event and recording it all in order to release the highlights. me = pretty hyped.

alright, "10:30 at the Oasis" is chillwave. Had to be said.

Rated O just gets better and better. The River is such an awesome song. Did anybody nom it for the 05-09 Tracks Poll?

demons a. real (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 20:14 (thirteen years ago) link

I didn't nominate any of the songs for the Tracks poll because it was so. fucking. hard. to pick just a few. Just an astounding album all around.

he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 20:15 (thirteen years ago) link

Frankly I just don't listen to Oneida as much as I wish I did. They're such a good band, but I have to be in a certain mood and in the right company to really enjoy them. You can't just stick em on in the background while you do the washing up.

Evil Eau (dog latin), Thursday, 28 April 2011 11:32 (twelve years ago) link

ve watched for years as their contemporaries become famous, or far lesser bands jock their sound.
might be true, but it might be at least in part the band's own fault? they don't seem too interested in pursuing a standard indie rock career, at least in terms of touring/promotion, etc. which is good in a lot of ways, but it also means that they're going to be a little less known. i think it'll all even out in the end.

tylerw, Thursday, 28 April 2011 15:01 (twelve years ago) link

Well, to be fair, I think that they used to tow the typical indie rock line. At this point, dudes are married with children, and it's pretty tough to be a family man living on the road. Hence these marathon Ocropolis sessions, I suppose. I mean, I've seen them ten times in my life but none of those shows were in the last five years. And I've only been to NYC twice.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 28 April 2011 15:08 (twelve years ago) link

I think that they are just too extreme/weird/sincere/awesome for mass acceptance.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 28 April 2011 15:09 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, probably. i mean, i think it's admirable -- with them, i pretty much know nothing except the records, which is kind of rare these days?

tylerw, Thursday, 28 April 2011 15:16 (twelve years ago) link

or just rare in general.

tylerw, Thursday, 28 April 2011 15:16 (twelve years ago) link

That sucks. You should really see them! Let's meet at ATP in sept.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 28 April 2011 15:21 (twelve years ago) link

is this ATP UK?

Evil Eau (dog latin), Thursday, 28 April 2011 15:23 (twelve years ago) link

I got an email from Kid Millions today (no braggin) talking about taking his Man Forever project on the road.
I'll admit, I was a tad let down by the prospect of a local show with Kid that isn't Oneida. But he wants to tour the country (world?) and just hook up and jam with local drummers wherever he happens to be. I think that's really awesome. I mean, imagine you're an 18 year old kid in Iowa and you get to sit in with Kid and who knows how many other drummers and make a ridiculous amount of noise. That is pretty special, imo.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 28 April 2011 15:25 (twelve years ago) link

ha, yeah that'd be cool.
would love to go to atp one of these days, but i am guessing this year is not the year.

tylerw, Thursday, 28 April 2011 15:32 (twelve years ago) link

two weeks pass...

Having been alerted to this, to respond to Doran:

Just to qualify: I thought no drums was a great idea and was really looking forward to some kind of cosmic synth masterpiece but on first listen I found it really airless, monotone and unengaging. That said they're a band who often does stuff that grows on me.

I gotta disagree, this is hooking me from the get-go -- if Neu! could do both the drum overdrive and zone equally well, no reason why any other similarly inclined band can't. I came in with no expectations and find it to be this massive, dramatic howling thing that's all about restraint and sudden, turn-on-a-dime moments. Cryptic as all hell in the best way, and it functions for me on its own and in combination with the larger whole.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 19:35 (twelve years ago) link

I saw them a few times in London. Each time people were talking through their sets. One time, there was a guy braying about his overdraft facility for about ten minutes straight through the first two songs. I pinned him to a wall and threatened to knock his teeth out if he didn't shut up. One of the most shameful incidents of my 30s.

(He shut up but the ephemeral bubble of gig enjoyment had been decisively burst by that point.)
