was going through some old CDs and came across this album that I listened to many a time in middle school.

http://i.imgur.com/IonPs.jpg

eventually I owned the single or full album of all of these except Cracker and Danzig - job well done by the compilation makers/PR people.

White Zombie's best song all the way

the ineffable genius of DJP (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 02:28 (twelve years ago) link

The mom of Ivan De Prume (White Zombie) once came to my house to adopt a kitten, back in the 90's. She weirded us out a little too much, and we ended up sending her away, nicely. I've never minded No Rain as much as other people seem to...

zero memory of either the live or googoo dolls tracks on volume 2, everything else i either love or could get some nostalgic half enjoyment out of hearing. whereas this has 'zombie' on it.

balls, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 02:36 (twelve years ago) link

I'd say 'Hey, Jealousy'. I was a fan of those early Gin Blossoms singles. Runners up are STP and White Zombie.

Really, though, all this stuff is my admittedly middling-quality Achilles heel. I have a 700+ song '90s Alternative Nation playlist that I utilize anytime I need pleasantly familiar aural wallpaper.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 02:43 (twelve years ago) link

kind of surprised at the White Zombie love despite the fact that I still enjoy the song a lot. In retrospect it's much poppier than it felt at the time. 13-year-old me loved the cover art:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/60/White_Zombie_More_Human_Than_Human.jpg

My top four here would be Hey Jealousy > More Human > No Rain > Cantaloop.

I hate every song on here except More Human & Mother, and I voted Mother because while More Human is great it's a huge dropoff in quality from the bizarro fuck-rock schtick White Zombie'd been working for the two or three years before that. No way of selling anybody on this proposition I know but trust me Whiney if you hadn't been, like, just a kid before White Zombie broke bigger, a dollar says you'd be very much on the front lines of telling people who like the later quasi-industrial White Zombie that they are wrong

"mother" = perfect riff, over which there is danzig's characteristic lowing, which is totally theatrical i.e. capable of high ridiculousness but also there's this unsettling quality to an unbroken character, and then the song also captures a kind of metal appeal by delivering something distant and dark and nightmarish in a totally visceral way

This looks to be stuff from '93 and '94. To give you an idea of just how much other stuff MTV discarded to pare things down to just these tracks, may I propose a pair of alternate universe Buzz Bin variants...

1993:
4 Non Blondes - "What's Up?"
Beck - "Loser"
Belly - "Feed The Tree"
Bjork - "Human Behavior"
Breeders - "Cannonball"
Digable Planets - "Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat)"
Dinosaur Jr. - "Start Choppin'"
Frank Black - "Los Angeles"
Juliana Hatfield 3 - "Spin The Bottle"
Lemonheads - "Into Your Arms"
Lenny Kravitz - "Are You Gonna Go My Way?"
Matthew Sweet - "Girlfriend"
Nirvana - "Heart-Shaped Box"
Pearl Jam - "Daughter"
Porno For Pyros - "Pets"
The Proclaimers - "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)"
Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Soul To Squeeze"
Smashing Pumpkins - "Disarm"
Spin Doctors - "Two Princes"
Tool - "Sober"
U2 - "Numb"
Ween - "Push Th' Little Daisies"

1994:
Alice In Chains - "No Excuses"
Beastie Boys - "Sabotage"
Candlebox - "Far Behind"
Collective Soul - "Shine"
Counting Crows - "Mr. Jones"
Crash Test Dummies - "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm"
Green Day - "Basket Case"
Hole - "Violet"
Lisa Loeb - "Stay"
Live - "I Alone"
Mazzy Star - "Fade Into You"
Nine Inch Nails - "Closer"
Oasis - "Live Forever"
The Offspring - "Self Esteem"
Pavement - "Cut Your Hair"
REM - "What's The Frequency, Kenneth?"
Sheryl Crow - "All I Wanna Do"
Soundgarden - "Black Hole Sun"
Tori Amos - "God"
Urge Overkill - "Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon"
Veruca Salt - "Seether"
Weezer - "Buddy Holly"
Whale - "Hobo Humpin' Slobo Babe"

...which will likely make you nostalgic or nauseous. Or, as is so often the case with these things, a combination of both.

Soggy Cheeseburgers (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 05:02 (twelve years ago) link

those weren't actual buzz bin stuff videos. though, thats just stuff you made up

the ineffable genius of DJP (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 05:06 (twelve years ago) link

No Whiney I literally tapped into the alternate universe and brought these through from the other side do you see because that's what I am actually claiming here.

Soggy Cheeseburgers (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 05:09 (twelve years ago) link

I'm saying a list that has multiplatinum band u2 on it and a whale video that never made it out of Alt Nation rotation wouldnt be in the Buzz Bin even in an alternate universe.

the ineffable genius of DJP (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 05:11 (twelve years ago) link

Pearl Jam's "Daughter" didn't even have a video. This is a list of nonsense from your iTunes

the ineffable genius of DJP (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 05:12 (twelve years ago) link

Also, I didn't check beforehand, but it appears that most of those artists qualify. And considering that the videos of most of those songs were effing ubiquitous during that time, the objection is overruled. (gavel sound)

fuck deathcore and metalcore (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 05:17 (twelve years ago) link

some dude and aero are both otm in a way

i mean, clearly, that Buzz Bin was 80% "new artists" made to give the thing cred and 20% "alt-leaning already-popular things" so people had some reference point for why they were seeing the Eels on TV.

ffun. (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 19:07 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, that 94 ad you posted has only two real mtv 'breakthrough' vids (weezer and dino jr), a follow-up to a hit (offspring) and a 'wtf they're already huge' way more absurd than the cranberries (beasties). so yeah, by "zombie" the brand had been diluted.

da croupier, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 19:08 (twelve years ago) link

i totally get some dude's point - saying "buzz bins were bought by record labels and given to already popular bands" doesn't contradict that the Cranberries already received and could expect plenty of MTV airtime by "Zombie" and most of the groups given buzz bin nods didn't.

― da croupier, Tuesday, March 20, 2012 3:03 PM (5 minutes ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

that said, i've been accused of selective memory and long-held, judgment-clouding ilx beef by aero before, too, so i can't be trusted.

i'm not even sure that "feel the pain" was dino's first appearance in the buzz bin. for all i know that video where j snowboards briefly lived in the bin as well

da croupier, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 19:12 (twelve years ago) link

clearly, that Buzz Bin was 80% "new artists"

I'm not even sure this is true of the options being polled

"Zombie" and to a lesser, Beavis-fueled extent "More Human Than Human" are the only songs on the comp I wouldn't pick as the band's buzz bin breakthrough, with respect to "Sex Type Thing".

da croupier, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 19:20 (twelve years ago) link

actually I think I saw Cracker's "Happy Birthday To Me" a couple times after school, though "Low" definitely crossed over harder than that or "Teen Angst"

da croupier, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 19:22 (twelve years ago) link

Cracker, Gin Blossoms, Danzig, the Cranberries - these were not "new" acts in any way

look at you, flaunting your hip by saying you knew the gin blossoms from way back

da croupier, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 19:23 (twelve years ago) link

i was surprised later on to see that "Start Choppin'" had peaked higher on Billboard a year earlier than "Feel The Pain," since the latter seemed like a semi-big hit because of the video while i never really heard the former outside the parent album

some dude, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 19:24 (twelve years ago) link

Shakey, we're talking about songs bands broke through on MTV with, that you and your hipster buds were jamming to Dusted years before is kind of irrelevant
