The dropoff between vol 1 and vol 2 is fucking shameful

save for zombie and creep these are pretty far from the worst things most of these bands did

zero memory of either the live or googoo dolls tracks on volume 2, everything else i either love or could get some nostalgic half enjoyment out of hearing. whereas this has 'zombie' on it.

I'd say 'Hey, Jealousy'. I was a fan of those early Gin Blossoms singles. Runners up are STP and White Zombie.

Really, though, all this stuff is my admittedly middling-quality Achilles heel. I have a 700+ song '90s Alternative Nation playlist that I utilize anytime I need pleasantly familiar aural wallpaper.

voted White Zombie. takes me back to high school. really like Plush and Hey Jealousy too, but I'm burnt out on the former (still enjoy the latter).

kind of surprised at the White Zombie love despite the fact that I still enjoy the song a lot. In retrospect it's much poppier than it felt at the time. 13-year-old me loved the cover art:

'More Human...' was one of those songs that was a pleasant surprise to revisit 15 years after the fact. Pretty sure I like it more now than I did back then.

I hate every song on here except More Human & Mother, and I voted Mother because while More Human is great it's a huge dropoff in quality from the bizarro fuck-rock schtick White Zombie'd been working for the two or three years before that. No way of selling anybody on this proposition I know but trust me Whiney if you hadn't been, like, just a kid before White Zombie broke bigger, a dollar says you'd be very much on the front lines of telling people who like the later quasi-industrial White Zombie that they are wrong

"mother" = perfect riff, over which there is danzig's characteristic lowing, which is totally theatrical i.e. capable of high ridiculousness but also there's this unsettling quality to an unbroken character, and then the song also captures a kind of metal appeal by delivering something distant and dark and nightmarish in a totally visceral way

i mean, clearly, that Buzz Bin was 80% "new artists" made to give the thing cred and 20% "alt-leaning already-popular things" so people had some reference point for why they were seeing the Eels on TV.

yeah, that 94 ad you posted has only two real mtv 'breakthrough' vids (weezer and dino jr), a follow-up to a hit (offspring) and a 'wtf they're already huge' way more absurd than the cranberries (beasties). so yeah, by "zombie" the brand had been diluted.

i totally get some dude's point - saying "buzz bins were bought by record labels and given to already popular bands" doesn't contradict that the Cranberries already received and could expect plenty of MTV airtime by "Zombie" and most of the groups given buzz bin nods didn't.

i'm not even sure that "feel the pain" was dino's first appearance in the buzz bin. for all i know that video where j snowboards briefly lived in the bin as well

"Zombie" and to a lesser, Beavis-fueled extent "More Human Than Human" are the only songs on the comp I wouldn't pick as the band's buzz bin breakthrough, with respect to "Sex Type Thing".

actually I think I saw Cracker's "Happy Birthday To Me" a couple times after school, though "Low" definitely crossed over harder than that or "Teen Angst"

i was surprised later on to see that "Start Choppin'" had peaked higher on Billboard a year earlier than "Feel The Pain," since the latter seemed like a semi-big hit because of the video while i never really heard the former outside the parent album

also in 1994 lots of kids (like me) were dumb and didnt know any dinosaur jr songs until "feel the pain"

whether it was a corporate scheme or not, it exposed people to decent music they wouldnt have heard otherwise.
