the pinefox (the pinefox), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 16:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

I should qualify my above post, and say that my better judgement thinks that juicy is a great song, but that I shouldn't be inspired by it.

Pinefox- Mike and the Mechanics???

I Only Wanna Be With You - Dusty Springfield.

She could be reading out Biggie lyrics and Id still find it inspiring.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 18:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

jess - I didn't see the earlier thread, so I don't know if this overlaps, but what I was getting at is that I'm pretty cynical and it's difficult to positively manipulate me, but I was listening to this, and when they get to the "Why can't we give ourselves one more chance?" part, I thought to myself, you know, that is a good idea. even though there's something silly about the song and I would probably choke on that lyric if I saw it written down or heard it in a Mariah Carey song.

doug, Tuesday, 17 September 2002 18:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

you dont have to excuse yourself just cuz jess made a bitchy remark. just for future ref.

Kris (aqueduct), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 21:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

cheesy + big i.e. overplayed i.e. popular?

is that what you mean? if not, define what you mean by "big" and "cheesy". if it is, i would have to say i love a lot of popular songs despite them being overplayed. Kinda relates to the "should yo have to explain why you like it instead of just saying 'i just like it' - great art bypasses your rationalising, critical faculties and streams into your soul IMHO. Eventually :)

chris sallis, Tuesday, 17 September 2002 22:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

I am assuming that "big'n'cheesy" means "unsubtle" and/or "critically laughed at".

Nate Patrin, Tuesday, 17 September 2002 22:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

"shadowplay"

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 03:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

chris - i don't necessarily mean popular - i'm more referring to this sweeping grandeur - "unsubtle" is a good word. critically laughed at, i don't know, probably. again, just the idea that it's putting forth lyrics or ideas that are terminally doe-eyed and heartfelt and optimistic and overly broad and that you (if you tend towards cynicism, esp.) would typically laugh at but suddenly you say - holy spunk, that moved me.

And "Do You Realize" is a perfect example of what I'm talking about.

doug, Wednesday, 18 September 2002 06:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

'dancing queen' by abba, though i'm with kris - several of the songs listed here have elicited the same reaction at one point or another. must do something about that karaoke fetish...

angelo (angelo), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 06:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

"can't smile without you" by barry manilow and "one day in your life" by wacko jacko are two of my favourite ever songs. the former makes me ecstatically happy (in a melancholy kinda way) the latter unaccountably sad (in a bittersweet sorta way). either way, we're talking tears.
