I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Thursday, 9 February 2012 21:45 (twelve years ago) link

Right?

Raymond Cummings, Thursday, 9 February 2012 21:49 (twelve years ago) link

pretty sure i'm in the minority on ilm in preferring kendrick

I wish he'd do a mixtape where he just rhymes stuff with "Figg"

Raymond Cummings, Thursday, 9 February 2012 21:51 (twelve years ago) link

just spent most of the evening listening to schoolboy q

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Thursday, 9 February 2012 21:51 (twelve years ago) link

I need to hear more Kendrick so I can weigh in

Raymond Cummings, Thursday, 9 February 2012 21:51 (twelve years ago) link

the only person on ILM who I've actually seen say "I like Schoolboy Q more than Kendrick Lamar" is D-40

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Thursday, 9 February 2012 21:54 (twelve years ago) link

i like setbacks better than section 80, does that count?

pandemic, Thursday, 9 February 2012 21:55 (twelve years ago) link

seem to remember a fair few ppl expressing pandemic's opinion. i won't really contest it since section 80 does kinda drag. kendrick's best verses just blow me away though.

art dealin' thru the west coast (tpp), Thursday, 9 February 2012 21:59 (twelve years ago) link

I like SchoolboyQ better, though the more I listen to section 80 the more I like it. It's def a grower.

Regional Tug (irrational), Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:00 (twelve years ago) link

i prefer q to kendrick too, yeah

POLL

dr dre throwing dubstep balloons (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:01 (twelve years ago) link

i like some of his songs, still think it's weird/disheartening when a rapper uses the word "fags" and no one seems to think it's a problem, not really interested in a big discussion about it because i know it's been talked to death but i'm just tired of it. sorry.

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:01 (twelve years ago) link

ok i know this is a schoolboy q thread but i LOVE that bit in the A.D.H.D video in the empty office building when the cute girl in typing on a non-existant type-writer and kendrick is pretending to pass her some invisible papers

I didn't like Section 80 at all but am curious about this dude

What did you not like about it?

dr dre throwing dubstep balloons (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:14 (twelve years ago) link

granted I only listened to it twice but I really did not dig the production

max buzzword (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:15 (twelve years ago) link

'blessed' off the new schoolboy q is really nice effort from both of these guys actually

Raymond Cummings, Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:52 (twelve years ago) link

I haven't heard the new Schoolboy Q album, but the production on Setbacks seems pretty slight compared to Section.80 to me. And Kendrick is a lot more charismatic and a better songwriter imo.

lag∞n affiliated (The Reverend), Friday, 10 February 2012 02:44 (twelve years ago) link

the production on the new schoolboy is pretty cool and even tho i wouldn't agree i'd hear an argument that from that standpoint it trumps section.80, but in any other facet i think it's kendrick by a pretty large margin

J0rdan S., Friday, 10 February 2012 02:47 (twelve years ago) link

kendrick is just a much better songwriter... q hits on some good stuff on a few songs on the album but it's still pretty amateurish in a lot of places to me

J0rdan S., Friday, 10 February 2012 02:48 (twelve years ago) link

and not amateurish in a way that i guess i'm attracted to... just sorta skating by on 'vibe' and all that

J0rdan S., Friday, 10 February 2012 02:49 (twelve years ago) link

how was the production 'slight,' like what do you mean by that?

the production on section80 was kind of hokey to me in parts, v grandiose & all that

D-40, Friday, 10 February 2012 04:48 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i agree with that

diln (k3vin k.), Friday, 10 February 2012 04:49 (twelve years ago) link

yeah kendrick made some real corny choices on section.80 but i don't think it's a huge deal

J0rdan S., Friday, 10 February 2012 04:51 (twelve years ago) link

cosign n/a's post. otoh most of the music I listen to is dudes talking about who they're going to kill & with what gas-powered garden tool so glass houses I guess

"And Kendrick is a lot more charismatic"

This is basically what it boils down to for me. His voice is v engaging/unique.

Having said this, SQ's new album is probably my favorite release so far this year.

best thing i've heard from any of these dudes

flopson, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 07:13 (twelve years ago) link

when he played here on his spring tour tickets were $25. but there's a whole shady cottage industry of nightclubs who book a midlevel rapper to perform for 20 minutes and charge an arm and a leg.

some dude, Tuesday, 9 September 2014 01:14 (nine years ago) link

It's part of the local festival. All good if it helps the local festival alive, give a chant to emergent artists to perform and whatnot, but there is so little hip-hop going in this city (montreal) it ends up being very frustrating.

https://soundcloud.com/topdawgent/that-part-black-hippy-remix-1

Ab-Soul used to be an actual good rapper, I have no idea what happened. The rest of the dudes acquit themselves pretty well.

Also, Blank Face is out today.

poolboy skew (voodoo chili), Friday, 8 July 2016 13:33 (seven years ago) link

I have just been listening to Blank Face, not feeling a lot of it - maybe I'm just not in the mood for it. I keep waiting for habits and contradictions 2 tbh.

calzino, Friday, 8 July 2016 13:46 (seven years ago) link

"Man of the Year" is still song of the year

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 8 July 2016 14:50 (seven years ago) link

^might be right

im liking this though, not sure i heard a standout killer jam but all m/l was pleasing

johnny crunch, Friday, 8 July 2016 20:03 (seven years ago) link

I had a bit of a stoned epiphany listening to Blank Face last night and have decided it is pretty dope after all.

calzino, Sunday, 10 July 2016 12:19 (seven years ago) link

It hasn't got anything to match some of the bangers off oxymoron, but it is still a fine album.

calzino, Sunday, 10 July 2016 12:20 (seven years ago) link

I'm in love with "Groovy Tony/Eddie Kane."

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 10 July 2016 12:25 (seven years ago) link

the tha dogg pound track bangs p good

johnny crunch, Sunday, 10 July 2016 21:24 (seven years ago) link

record is good. been pretty hit and miss artist for me but this is consistent

moistest hoist (Spottie), Tuesday, 12 July 2016 00:21 (seven years ago) link

This is amazing. Agreed that Groovy Tony/Eddie Kane is something else. Love the Vince Staples and E-40 tracks too.

Even despite the inconsistency of previous albums I still loved 'em, but this one hasn't got a dud track on it and is probably his best album yet. But still my fave ever Q tracks are on habits.. and oxymoron.

calzino, Sunday, 17 July 2016 13:01 (seven years ago) link

I don't know those albums at all - this is my introduction. I'll definitely revisit older stuff on the strength of this though.

Oxymoron is at least half an alltime classic album, plenty on it to love.

calzino, Sunday, 17 July 2016 13:16 (seven years ago) link

John Muir is another cut off Blank Face i keep repeating.

calzino, Sunday, 17 July 2016 16:30 (seven years ago) link

yep

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 17 July 2016 16:31 (seven years ago) link

JoHn Muir is indeed a highlight, classic rider anthem with crisp live drums

You gotta admire the man's dedication to the capital "H" meme

poolboy skew (voodoo chili), Sunday, 17 July 2016 16:51 (seven years ago) link

i don't know what i think yet, it did sound aimless as i've seen said, but strong, likely a grower

j., Sunday, 17 July 2016 21:49 (seven years ago) link

I felt like that at first, it is deffo a grower and has a lot of strength in depth.

calzino, Sunday, 17 July 2016 21:59 (seven years ago) link

good album imo

based stress reduction (crüt), Monday, 18 July 2016 14:46 (seven years ago) link

this sounds great on first listen to me

can't tell if there's anything as good as 'man of the year' or 'collard greens' but there was a huge gap between those 2 and the next best track on oxymoron, this is way more consistent

flopson, Thursday, 21 July 2016 20:11 (seven years ago) link

Yeah this was my feeling as well

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 21 July 2016 21:25 (seven years ago) link

mourning joe (voodoo chili), Friday, 26 April 2019 14:52 (four years ago) link

gave it a full listen this morning. feels low-stakes and fragmented compared to Blank Face. some good moments and cool production but weirdly unambitious. some grating hooks, too.

Simon H., Friday, 26 April 2019 14:57 (four years ago) link

yeah, i figured from the pre-released tracks that it wouldn't be as ambitious or eclectic as blank face, but whatever, every artist reserves the right to make minor works every once in a while.

mourning joe (voodoo chili), Friday, 26 April 2019 14:58 (four years ago) link

I don't think he's charming enough to coast through bang average material or something. what a disappointment :(
