Great track, heard it via (IIRC) Lex & Al's EOY lists & wished it had a dedicated thread to garner more support.

Feels like a really classic/obvious sample being used - anyone know much about the production?

i heard this a couple of months ago and liked it a lot

surm, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 20:11 (1 year ago) Permalink

Damn, I didn't know about this song. Great stuff. Also curious about the sample.

have looked around for prod and/or sample info and have yet to find any

some dude, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 21:51 (1 year ago) Permalink

Also, apparently the label just changed her from 'Brianna' to 'Brianna Perry' not sure why, but it's changed on iTunes and everywhere else.

Hmph.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 03:41 (1 year ago) Permalink

probably because when you say it it sounds like rihanna and that's weird for people in their minds

surm, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 03:55 (1 year ago) Permalink

yeah i was gonna say, i'd started to see her full name pop up more and more. probably a good thing, it's hard to be a mononym with a fairly common name.

some dude, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 04:13 (1 year ago) Permalink

i cosign this thread and this video, glad to see it's getting a push - way too good not to

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 10:52 (1 year ago) Permalink

2 months pass...

ah so the guy who produced "marilyn monroe" is called cainon lamb and his past credits are basically "countdown" and "need u bad"

think that merits a one-to-watch stamp

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Wednesday, 18 April 2012 11:05 (1 year ago) Permalink

yeah i think alex in montreal had pointed out that he also did "countdown," crazy to realize the same producer had 2 songs in my top 10 last year and i had no idea. didn't know about "need u bad," though, nice.

some former lust object you've shamefully forgotten (some dude), Wednesday, 18 April 2012 11:12 (1 year ago) Permalink

it's a co-production credit w/missy

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Wednesday, 18 April 2012 11:18 (1 year ago) Permalink

he did a couple of monica singles too but i closed the tab accidentally and can't remember which ones

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Wednesday, 18 April 2012 11:19 (1 year ago) Permalink

is the best easter egg on this the bit where she goes "i'm goin' blonde, i think i'm marilyn / so i bought more, maryland" cuz with her drawl "bought more" sounds like "baltimore"

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Wednesday, 18 April 2012 20:43 (1 year ago) Permalink

haha i obviously caught that on the first listen so it never occurred to me that it could be a slow burner

some dude, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 20:44 (1 year ago) Permalink

WHOA.

Mind. Blown.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Wednesday, 18 April 2012 20:45 (1 year ago) Permalink

for ages i thought it was a lazy line b/c she rhymed "marilyn" with "marilyn" for no reason, i only got it because when you rap along the "bought" shapes itself into "balt" and then i went ohhhhhhhhh duhhhhhhh

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Wednesday, 18 April 2012 20:46 (1 year ago) Permalink

i'm going to be talking about this song on the guardian podcast tomorrow and wondering how excruciating it will be if i try to explain that easter egg in a british accent, to people who might not get it

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Wednesday, 18 April 2012 20:47 (1 year ago) Permalink

haha

i still hear this on the radio now again and am like damn this song still needs to blow up. or she needs to drop a worthy follow-up.

some dude, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 20:48 (1 year ago) Permalink

i finally got round to the most recent mixtape, it's pretty good too. has it actually charted? the video's on the atlantic youtube account so i assume she has a major label deal and is concentrating on finishing her album.

no, face off is the one i meant

what was the whole elaborate charade with people pretending not to know the sample all about upthread

that... is what you were all doing right

heh oh yeah i remember seeing that before

"Marilyn Monroe" charted in lower reaches of the R&B chart, months and months ago, before the video dropped

xp Lamb has been Missy Elliot's co-producer for a while now...

Peace (peaceful) (The Brainwasher), Thursday, 19 April 2012 01:19 (1 year ago) Permalink

ok, so like, what songs of these did he do besides "need u bad": Missy without Timbo: singles, features, and songwriting/production credits

some dude, Thursday, 19 April 2012 01:22 (1 year ago) Permalink

"holding you down," (actually, all of Missy's productions for Jazmine), "everything to me," a lot of stuff for Fantasia, Keyshia Cole's "Let It Go"... basically, most productions attributed to Missy in the last few years were co-produced by Lamb.

rtc - I didn't mean the drum loop - I meant those horns, which I thought were a sample but maybe not... Sorry for the confusion.

I got all excited and thought you had placed where they came from.

twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Thursday, 19 April 2012 02:41 (1 year ago) Permalink

"all the kids at school call me baby trina" is still one of the more o_0 lines on that album. like given what trina's MO was/is, how does that even happen. and was lil brianna even allowed to listen to the album she was on.

i just gave that new swv album a spin yesterday, we should probably talk about it in the r&b thread at some point but i don't have enough thoughts on it yet to do it myself.

i've DJed it out twice in the past month and both times people came up to ask what it was. we can do this!

lol @ people missing the amen sample (it is slowed down a ton, but still)

*kills everything*

*downloads again*

r&b morcilla (lex pretend), Monday, 11 March 2013 17:08 (2 months ago) Permalink

there was a different "Symphony #9" mixtape out in November that WAS mostly half-song snippets, this new one appears to be a complete other release with basically the same title.

some dude, Monday, 11 March 2013 17:10 (2 months ago) Permalink

she's already in my bad books for fucking up my id tags by adding her surname AFTER i'd played "marilyn monroe" a million times

r&b morcilla (lex pretend), Monday, 11 March 2013 17:12 (2 months ago) Permalink

this tape is pretty b-grade tbh, fun enough but far too beholden to its guests after all the self-possessed character 'marilyn monroe' had

r|t|c, Monday, 11 March 2013 17:18 (2 months ago) Permalink

ANYWAY

"take my breath away" giving me that ruff sqwad "died in ur arms" realness

r&b morcilla (lex pretend), Monday, 11 March 2013 17:18 (2 months ago) Permalink

really thought she'd use "marilyn monroe" as more of a springboard

r&b morcilla (lex pretend), Monday, 11 March 2013 17:19 (2 months ago) Permalink

xp heh spoken like a true night slugger

it's more like a dipset heatmakerz nod (as was the rsqwad) only er, without the heat made. nicki can pull off that kinda prom dressantino vibe really well somehow, brianna kinda but not so much imo

r|t|c, Monday, 11 March 2013 17:28 (2 months ago) Permalink

find the mmts cut really hilarious for some reason, just him and that beat together

r|t|c, Monday, 11 March 2013 17:33 (2 months ago) Permalink

finished it and would agree with rtc's assessment, but it's still pretty fun - she works so well on uptempo beats that really knock, am feeling "red cup", "get it girl", "top notch" on first listen

pretty much functions how tiding-over mixtapes should
