She's getting all the hype and it seems her thing is to rap on top of electronic songs (lazy jay, lone, machinedrum, jimmy edgar). She'll be releasing her debut album later this year. Will she rise or will she flop?
― Moka, Tuesday, 17 January 2012 09:13 (1 year ago) Permalink
If she can throw together more stuff that sounds as interesting as 212, then yeah, I think she'll do just fine. I guess we'll have to wait and find out.

Haha I'd almost prefer it if I never heard from/of Azealia again, and I like "212".
Or if she basically had a career like Slarta John or Richie Dan.
That'd be just fine.
― Tim F, Tuesday, 17 January 2012 11:30 (1 year ago) Permalink
yeah! also applies to LDR/"Video Games" and Kreayshawn/"Gucci Gucci"
― irina-camelia begu (lex pretend), Tuesday, 17 January 2012 11:35 (1 year ago) Permalink
Also I sorta resent Azealia hype because, like, where were all of these fuckers for Lady Stush?

or reema major this year! a lot of the time when i see people wetting themselves over azealia, i think, yall need to expand your horizons and stop reading the same blogs as everyone else
― irina-camelia begu (lex pretend), Tuesday, 17 January 2012 11:47 (1 year ago) Permalink
Lady Stush and Azealia aren't exactly similar though.
Or if she basically had a career like Slarta John or Richie Dan
^^^ Yes this. Given the people involved in her career and the sort of audience she's courting it's more likely that they could fuck it up completely and she could end up with some hamfisted try-to-please-everyone-actually-please-no-one Lady Sovereign career.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 17 January 2012 11:50 (1 year ago) Permalink
Lady Sovereign is a good reference point actually. Though obv they don't actually sound alike.
― Tim F, Tuesday, 17 January 2012 11:53 (1 year ago) Permalink
i still think kid sister is the closest ref point for az banks - she's kind of like a kid sis who hit at the right time
― irina-camelia begu (lex pretend), Tuesday, 17 January 2012 11:54 (1 year ago) Permalink
and i think that line about "i am the young sis, the beacon" in "212" is shade directed at kid sis ;_;
― irina-camelia begu (lex pretend), Tuesday, 17 January 2012 11:55 (1 year ago) Permalink
Yeah I'd say Kid Sister works best as a sonic comparison (the big slab of dancehall influence in Lady Stush separates her from this conversation for me), Lady Sov as an example of where/how her career might go wrong.

I love they say she's not a one trick pony, yet every track she released in 2011 was just her performing on top of a song that already existed. That's exactly ONE trick.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 18 January 2012 21:40 (1 year ago) Permalink
that's not really a 'trick,' that's just something a lot of new artists do, especially rappers, whether you think that's a valid measure of their talent or creativity or not. obviously that's probably not what she's going to do on her major label album anyway.
― Planned Perrintweet (some dude), Wednesday, 18 January 2012 21:43 (1 year ago) Permalink
Oh yeah, I'm sure whatever turns up on her album will be created solely for her with her in the loop of the process. Look forward to it, tbh.

I swooned over "212" too, and notice I really don't have any other nasty female rap on 125-130 BPM house beats, which is a pretty natural environment. Not asking for a derail, but I'd appreciate a few pointers to Bank's precursors.

FWIW, I think AB is interesting because of the ease with which she crossed that ethnic/oceanic divide on "212", though her other tracks lack that tension of syncopated boast over metronomic propulsion.

― 乒乓, Monday, 11 March 2013 14:37 (2 months ago) Permalink
AZ is definitely making a bigger splash but no one actually thought Kreayshawn was going anywhere, did they? AFAICT no one has spent any time pretending or attempting to convince themselves that they like anything by her other than "Gucci Gucci", whereas ppl are still acting like AZ has the potential to put out good songs.
― Darth Icky (DJP), Monday, 11 March 2013 14:40 (2 months ago) Permalink
I definitely think Kreayshawn has the potential to put out more good songs if she goes back to making catchy street rap. Not holding my breath until she does though.
― longneck, Monday, 11 March 2013 14:45 (2 months ago) Permalink
banks will 100% sell more albums than kreayshawn, if that's the barometer
based on the crowd when i saw kreayshawn in dec., she'd be smart to try and reinvent herself as, like, rap for people who go to warped tour
― J0rdan S., Monday, 11 March 2013 14:48 (2 months ago) Permalink
i agree that az banks yelling on twitter won't turn the public off her, but it's probably got to be turning potential collaborators (musical and non-musical) in the industry off her - not so much beefing with randoms like the stone roses or iggy azalea but turning on people she had good working relationships with like baauer and shystie
although at this point the paucity of official material - let alone good official material that matches up to her one great track - is what will kill her career; it's fair to surmise that, regardless of the beefs, she's having issues getting this debut album made and released
― r&b morcilla (lex pretend), Monday, 11 March 2013 15:02 (2 months ago) Permalink
it's probably got to be turning potential collaborators (musical and non-musical) in the industry off her
That's what I was thinking when I asked the twitter question. Who's going to work with her if there's a chance they'll be attacked five minutes later for doing so or not doing so?
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 11 March 2013 15:05 (2 months ago) Permalink

plus it's reeealllly not a good look when you're turning on people with much less of a profile than you, you just come off like a bully rather than the (potentially endearing) bratty upstart like when you attack established names
also at this point i'm less sure it's part of a PR masterplan, though possibly AZB herself thinks she's doing it for publicity.
