Goapele

Don't know if it's acceptable to drag this from the rolling R'n'B thread - I'm not a regular, but thought it might be worthy of wider attention. I know the Lex has been stanning for Goapele round these parts. Been listening to the Break Of Dawn LP and it's really light and silky, very pretty soul music. I especially like "Right Here" all harmonic soars and neon-lit synths. Apparently her earlier stuff is more current affairs-y... But that's as much as I know...

and her name makes me think of fruit juice for some reason, which is a plus.

I got this album the other week after hearing Play on the tracks of the year Spotify playlist. It's solid all the way through, the only problem is it's way too short.

Along with Play this is my other favourite song on there.

Haven't heard any of her earlier work yet.

In no way is Break of Dawn too short. 30-35 minutes is the sweet spot, especially when there's no filler. This albums just about perfect. I've actually found some of her vocals to be a little forced in the past, she would sometimes roll into the note she was trying to get at, kind of over-silk it. BUT, she seemed to scale that back here and she nails every track with a more simple/straightforward/mature vocal approach.

One of my favorite recent releases for sure.

Am so in love with the Break of Dawn album at the moment. Think it might be my favourite R'n'B album of the decade so far.

You were right by the way, this album is not too short at all, it's just perfect the way it is.

I had no idea people were paying attention to Goapele nowadays. I love her first two albums, but the EP she put out a couple years back was underwhelming and seemed to suggest that she was going in a direction that didn't do her much justice. But seeing people talk about her latest is def promising.

There's also a remix which crams Snoop Dogg into the picture, but he doesn't ruin it by any means.

Not digging much else from the album on first pass, though.
