anyone else heard it yet?

what it is: new soul jazz comp of lovers rock/slick reggae covers of classic disco/pop hits, ala "ring my bell", "don't stop til you get enough", "upside down" (and "rappers delight"!!)

Yeah, I put "Don't Stop" up on FilePile a bit ago. I love it, Marcello loves it, Dr C I believe loves it - the predictable English suspects. It's been big Summer listening.

Yes, I do. Especially Ring My Bell, Upside Down, Don't Stop and Rapper's Delight. The Joe Gibbs production on the last two is a bit special. I wish Soul Jazz would do some decent sleeve notes though.

If it seems obvious it could very well be that uh YOU are the problem. That sounds snarky but it isn't meant that way. Just that maybe you are already familiar with it, and want something *different*?!?

Yeah that's probably it - it is the only time SJ have put out a comp of stuff I'm already very familiar with, I suppose. I take it for granted that I am the problem with most negative opinions I have (well some anyway).

Sort of agreed about ITBTWR, as I said at the time. Still ended up with a copy though as I didn't have the Pop Group or Slits trax, or oddly enough for a Factory bore like me, the 'Knife Slits Water' 12 inch version, which is ace. There was little excuse for putting 'Being Boiled' on it though, or the same two 23 Skidoo tracks as on 9 O'Clock Drop.

The *worst* Soul Jazz release I have is Studio One DJs which, whilst good, doesn't catch fire like the other Studio One comps. I now have all the 100% Series and they're all overwhelmingly ace with 400% just shading it from 200% and 500%. 300% is the least essential.

SJ do often go for the obvious choices - Studio One Rockers and In The begining.. suffered from that rather badly I thought. The saem two 23 Skidoo tracks as on that Andy Weatehrall comp seemed a bit crap. Still they have done the amazing Chicano Power album of Latin Rock which is excellent.

I like all the SJ comps I've heard but they often seem like bad vfm - the Dynamite series are only abt 45mins long, they could certainly fit more tracks on. And as someone else remarked, the liner notes (or lack of 'em) often lets the packaging down.

I think the 45 minute length is key to the success of the comps: they're short enough for the casual listener not to get drowned. Since they're (I think) designed as primers / introductions rather than anything encyclopaedic, I think they're a good length.

Agree about the sleevenotes though: even if they just gave recommendations for where to go ot hear more from that artist / producer that would be great.

Don't have Hustle! yet but it looks good. I was pleased to pick up the Ballistic 12" of "Ring My Bell" for 50p the other day though and that's great.

Well SJ did a Studio One Discomix comp, but it's not at all the same thing. It's Discomix as in 'extended version' or in many cases 'new version with added syn-drums'. That said, there are a couple of versions of 'I Want Your Love' on there.
