it's a pretty brilliant equation, super cheesy pop hooks + exxxtreeeme brostep breakdowns, at least if you like getting paid in 2k11.

this is unusual for batman. (Jordan), Friday, 11 November 2011 23:04 (2 years ago) Permalink

Also for reference: is it brostep?

Still my favourite Skrillex:

Tim F, Friday, 11 November 2011 23:09 (2 years ago) Permalink

I've decided that a lot of the appeal of this music is that it's like the "Come To Daddy" you can nod your head to.

otm!

“I’ve been deep into electronic music my entire life. The first records I ever owned were ‘Fat of Land’ by the Prodigy and ‘Come To Daddy’ by Aphex Twin,” raves Sonny Moore, better known as emerging electronic visionary SKRILLEX.

It doesn't sound any worse (or better) to me than lots of electronic music and dance pop stuff that gets praised on ILM (e.g., that incredibly awful Nayer/Pitbull song). Possible advantage of never really getting electronic dance music: being unphased by new developments (perversions, corruptions, whatever).

both songs here are decent for like a minute, but the spazzy stuff is just boring.

there was definitely a lot of lesser industrial/ebm similar to this.

Thraed of Skrillex sounds like a Iain M Banks novel

owenf, Friday, 11 November 2011 23:30 (2 years ago) Permalink

see that stuff is actually superfresh to me now xp

i spent a lot of time going out & occasionally DJing etc. for the bulk of my 20s, in a variety of scenes, and so I know lots of the 'classic dj tracks' -- it became kind of boring at a certain pt because you start to critique the DJs & no longer get lost in that "i have no idea what any of these songs are' mindset ... i've been going occasionally to this goth club called 'neo' in chi that is superfun because i don't know, like, any of the tracks -- its all 80s industrial type ish. and they play, like, nine inch nails at the end of the night. its not so much that i love the music -- i'm not out buying this stuff or shazam-ing it -- i just like that there's a dance scene i haven't bled for knowledge, and i'm kind of enjoying keeping it that way

anyway, its def a retro scene at some level because they arent putting on any dubstep tracks.

There's something potentially quite potent about the Brostep genre but i'm not convinced that Skrillex has anything like the talent or the vision to get the best out of it. He feels like the Korn to a Slipknot yet to come.

Mohombi Khush Hua (ShariVari), Friday, 11 November 2011 23:36 (2 years ago) Permalink

goth scene runs pretty deep in the Bay Area and I have had plenty of friends into it over the years. shit, once I lived with a woman who insisted she was conceived in a coffin... but it's just so silly. I'm sure DJP has a different perspective on it lol

The Uncanny Frankie Valley (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 11 November 2011 23:36 (2 years ago) Permalink

Identify with deej's post the above.

I still have vivid memories of watching 'The Living End' at 17 and really enjoying all the pop-industrial used in the background (Nitzer Ebb or something I guess) and having no idea what it was. I've always wanted to stumble on a club playing stuff like that and get lost in it.

Tim F, Friday, 11 November 2011 23:37 (2 years ago) Permalink

He feels like the Korn to a Slipknot yet to come.

lol

but yeah I see this pretty clear line from like Wax Trax >>> NIN >>> Aphex Twin >>> dupstep (I guess?) >>> this stuff and it's not really a lineage that interests me.

I guess I still like some Ministry records. That 1000 Homo DJs EP is good.

seems like these songs have a set-up and a punchline which most old industrial didn't have. some of it was tongue in cheek, but it was like that straight through.

ain't nothing nice (bnw), Friday, 11 November 2011 23:39 (2 years ago) Permalink

never really did the aphex twin or ministry thing or w/e so I've come to the conclusion that I don't really mind brostep - it's no more better or worse than say PATD! which is actually pretty good.

bring on the scary sprites!

i have a (semi-guilty) love for spazzy, headbanging brostep breakdowns. most of the electronic music that i love is the opposite of this, and i don't seek it out, but it's hilarious and effective. also it becomes amazing if les twins are involved (though i can't see them dancing to a skrillex track; their taste in beats is impeccable, really):

hmm I guess I will listen to bangarang, but track above is really generic sounding to my ears, like burial, pearson sound or faltydl with preset drums and strings. it should play in the cool teen store at the mall, whatever that is

Dominique, Thursday, 3 January 2013 22:07 (1 year ago) Permalink

sad 4 them

i don't think this track sounds like burial, there's something a bit new agey and ambient and '90s about it rather than ~night bus~ dark, but it is as boring as most burial

i read this as "it's catchier and has a bigger pop appeal than burial" which isn't good or bad

bish (bosch), don't kill my vibe (rennavate), Thursday, 3 January 2013 22:07 (1 year ago) Permalink

I don't really think that track is "catchy". it's maybe "lighter" than a burial or faltydl track. imo if it wasn't made by skrillex, it would never show up on ilx

Dominique, Thursday, 3 January 2013 22:11 (1 year ago) Permalink

"leaving" off this is pretty sweet

J0rdan S., Thursday, 3 January 2013 22:13 (1 year ago) Permalink

It's less of a copy of burial than faltydl (initially) already was, and way less of a copy than that one track on the Royal-T album. On and then like old Pariah tracks and etc. etc. etc. If copying Burial is a crime then Skrillex is gonna be on death row a long time.
