Ruban Nielson: I found it on one of those random-image sites-- it was my desktop wallpaper the whole time I was making the record. At first, I didn't know anything about it but it looked futuristic, which I like. It's a visual equivalent of what I wanted people to hear when they listened to the album.

this was some reddit ish floating around a while back: http://humanscribbles.blogspot.com/2010/12/spomenik-propaganda-or-pure-beauty.html

The pillars were composed of cool molecular hydrogen and dust that were being eroded away by photoevaporation from the ultraviolet light of relatively close and hot stars. The leftmost pillar was about four light years in length.
