* I recently received this email in my email box on my email page. Word is I've got email. No really there will be a split between Alvarius b(alan bishop of the Sun City Girls) and cerberus shoal(siberius s). Rumor has it that the groups of two became 1 after a mysterious package was received by the elder states man on this CD. Simply stated they will cover eachothers songs on this CD. You can get this disc by going to see cerberus shoal on tour, or you can just go to the merchandise table and leave. any way like I said I got this in my email box. does anybody know about this?

No Philadelphia? Sigh. I guess it serves me right, as I missed the show earlier this year.

four years pass...
Has anyone heard this split? Man, WFMU played the last track (the 18 minute one) today and I was more floored than I've been by anything in a long time. Stayed in my car a good ten extra minutes and then called the DJ. How's the rest of the disc?

The Cerberus Shoal tracks are great (I referenced them in the Joanna Newsom thread as a possible precursor) but you may have heard the best one. Seeing that song live, and now knowing who they were, was one of those experiences that is so crystal clear, years later, even though i was falling-down drunk. Just amazing. Love that fucking typewriter, love that voice. When I saw them she read all the lyrics from a big scroll. And it wasn't pretentious.

The Alvarius B was pretty forgettable for me.

two of the Alvarius B tracks are from the S/T double album, his 2nd. Since I consider that record one of humanity's finer achievements, it is difficult for me to objectively evaluate the rest. In this case "the rest" is AB covering the 18-minute track ("Ding") in an approx. 9 minute version and Cerberus Shoal covering the two AB tracks which is quite interesting. Good release overall, worth looking for.

Man, I really wish that track was available via iTunes or eMusic or perhaps even some free means of downloading things (HINT). I'm ordering the disc, but I need instant gratification, damnit!

Woo!

Whoa - the typewriter is all the way panned left. I didn't notice that in the car.

Fuck, this is good.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Thursday, 14 September 2006 03:29 (seventeen years ago) link

I love how the arrangement gets denser and denser each time, but it happens so slowly. The mere entrance of the jaw harp becomes jaw-dropping, not even to mention where the simple drum beat and the marimbas come in.

i love where her voice rises.

thanx hurting for reminding me how great this is. it had probably been a year (two?) since i'd heard it.

I also really dig all the use of noise, crowd chatter, etc. -- it's like what the Books try to do but done much better.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Thursday, 14 September 2006 20:33 (seventeen years ago) link

how does the rest of the cerberus back cat measure up? vim & vigour and Mr. Boy Dog are the only ones i've heard.

opium ben (davemotion), Thursday, 14 September 2006 20:54 (seventeen years ago) link

It's been hit-and-miss in my limnited searching. I know the pre-2001 stuff is way punkier, with different members of the band. The girls (who do the singing I like so much) joined around 2000, i think.
