seriously, no thread on this guy yet? (if there is, please delete this one!)

Anyway, new single for free download today: http://4ad.com/news/releases-7-and-g/

low-key, hoping he hasn't graduated into playing all chill all the time

New album is kind of a snooze.

errant flynn, Monday, 25 July 2011 23:18 (twelve years ago) link

Such a massive let down after Where Were You In 92. He gives the game away in his recent WIRE interview where it doesn't matter so much that he comes across as a massive wanker who can barely string a sentence together but his line of if you don't like this album now you will do at some point in the future but if you don't in the future tough, because it wasn't written for you. (Translation: I know I've made a bad album and I don't care.)

blueski, Monday, 25 July 2011 23:34 (twelve years ago) link

I don't mind the slightness of it, nor the "these are just sketches" feel it has. I think it sounds great, and the sketches are catchy and memorable; they carry emotional resonance on their very skinny frames. The only thing I'd change about it is the presence of Panda Bear... The album it comes closest to in some really intangible "feel" sense is, to me, the Richard D. James album.

Clarke B., Monday, 25 July 2011 23:40 (twelve years ago) link

it's the best stuff i've heard from him for sure

I prefer this to any of the stuff I've heard before. His previous stuff just sounded like bad IDM shoved into a dubstep-sized hole. And I agree with Clarke here:

I don't mind the slightness of it, nor the "these are just sketches" feel it has. I think it sounds great, and the sketches are catchy and memorable; they carry emotional resonance on their very skinny frames.

Yes they are quite slight and sketchy - I was underwhelmed at first, but the Wire interview that Doran mentions upthread actually made me reassess this. Yeah, he comes off as a bit of a prick - extremely arrogant in some cases - but it was great to read about his technical/compositional approach to making music, and this is laid bare on this album which has very little clutter on it.

rope (lloydwabbitt), Tuesday, 27 September 2011 23:41 (twelve years ago) link

He showed. It was one of the most hilariously contemptuous things I've ever seen, he played a bunch of his productions for the first half, at which point his computer overheated and he started simply playing gabber and snap music tracks he liked for the second half while wandering back and forth from backstage. He came back towards the end, played the Panda Bear track, then shut his computer and walked off. It was kind of a good time.

for some reason the grin on the Guy Fawkes mask gave an impression that he was having a good time. and yeah, he'd lift it up an inch or so to smoke through it at least every 12 minutes or so. There was a real sense that he completely lost interest in performing after the first 30 minutes or so.

A couple of Zomby quotes from the interview in self-titled are doing the rounds:

Who’s singing on “Natalia’s Song” then?
"A Russian singer. I don’t know her name. I’m surprised [that song] doesn’t have like 2 million [YouTube] views. It’s really a work of art. I’m really proud of some of my tunes. The aim’s always been to make records that haven’t been realized—the dream songs between the great songs you can’t quite hear."

and

"Like with “Natalia's Song”, I wrote it to give to Burial, really."

I used to post on the dubstepforum probably circa 2006/7 or whatever and zomby was on there, early in his production career when like "one spliff" or whatever that song was out and he was probably 18 or so., obviously a total prick of a poster.

anyway, there was another annoying poster, a 12 year old boy white-rapper who just spammed constantly. zomby took exception to this and wrote a post, which has become seared in my memory, saying that if this child ever released a record, zomby would go to a store selling it, take all the copies they had and piss on them
