all of those should be great. anyone up to doing some producers or labels?

are we waiting for the Manics poll to finish before the PSB can begin?

Zep will be fun

some dude, Saturday, 18 June 2011 16:01 (1 year ago) Permalink

I was going to wait until the polling closed in the Manic's thread, 22nd iirc and then start the PSB poll. The Manics reveal can go on while the PSB votes come in.

hyped for the PSBs poll. expecting high placing for My Funny Uncle

Prince would be my no.1 choice for a future poll though i think, just because i like the discovery of rarities aspect, and with led zep and steely dan everyone who's a big fan sort of knows every track

I'm A Genius, Too! (Jamie_ATP), Saturday, 18 June 2011 20:46 (1 year ago) Permalink

true-ish, although Steely Dan has some great unreleased songs most people don't know that i'd be youtubing all over the place trying to drum up support for

for the most part the dan aren't one of those 'treasure trove of unreleased stuff' bands. they have those early demos which aren't super interesting and then the gaucho stuff which is great but that's about it.

iatee, Saturday, 18 June 2011 20:51 (1 year ago) Permalink

to me the interesting part of these threads isn't so much the 'which rarity might sneak in' as much as the enthusiastic discussion and dissection of 'why' these tracks are the best.

Is this the status as of now still?

1. pet shop boys - billy dods
2. Beatles - Mark G
3. beach boys - iatee
4. __________
5. __________
6. __________
7. Led Zeppelin - WmC

Because I bailed on the Madonna idea, but Guided By Voices keeps nagging at me and I'm finally giving in. So put me down for Guided By Voices at #6.

Something dancey/electronic, or a label poll at 4? Madonna would be great if anybody wants to take up the challenge.

So when is it kicking off for the PSB's?

Are we waiting on the end of the Manics one first? Fair enough.

Suggsting: some sort of generic poll-thread title, e.g.

ILX Tracks Poll No 1 : Pet Shop Boys

Mark G, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 08:32 (1 year ago) Permalink

I like the uniformity in titling idea. Easier to search for in the future.

Alpaca Lips (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 21 June 2011 08:37 (1 year ago) Permalink

Any chance we could move either the Beatles or the Beach Boys back a bit? It's getting so canonical white dudes that there'll be minimal interest in doing anything else after we've trawled through everyone in Q magazine.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 08:47 (1 year ago) Permalink

Well, everyone else has backed off, timewise.

There's the Manics one up at the mo, the Pavement one just finished, the MC Tunes is taking it's time, just like his second album, so the pace is fairly leisurely.

I hesitate to suggest, but the Beach Boys' "Smile" is coming out fairly soon (the single is out already), so...

Mark G, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 08:52 (1 year ago) Permalink

(hopefully) BIG 50s decade trax poll coming sometime in July as well. Would hate for it to face one of these head to head, so I'll figure out what week that will roll out and let whomever is coordinating these know so a gap in the flow can be predetermined.

Alpaca Lips (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 21 June 2011 08:55 (1 year ago) Permalink

I mean, yeah I'd love someone to do a James Brown one, but do we collectively have the required knowledge to vote? I mean, I have the "Star Time" box which is pretty nice and all encompassing as these things go, but is that enough?

Mark G, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 09:06 (1 year ago) Permalink

There are shitloads of James Brown fans on ILM, surely?

Matt DC, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 09:24 (1 year ago) Permalink

If we want to make it a little less white then a labels poll such as Motown, Stax or Trojan or a genre poll such as disco (1975-80) or Northern Soul would fit in. I think a Wu-Tang and its members poll would be good too.

iatee, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 11:30 (1 year ago) Permalink

A Motown poll would be neato keen-o.

Mr. Patrick Batman (WmC), Tuesday, 21 June 2011 14:32 (1 year ago) Permalink

You can put me in to run Prince if you like - having fun doing the Manics one.

I guess Neil Young and Dylan are other ones that would be good due to the huge discogs, but i do agree on the less rock white dudes quota. Think a Jacksons one would be good - so Michael, Janet, Jackson 5, any family member.

I'm A Genius, Too! (Jamie_ATP), Tuesday, 21 June 2011 20:42 (1 year ago) Permalink

I'd love to see a Stax or Motown poll. The problem with genre polls like "disco" is that they descend into a flamewar about what does or does not belong to the genre.

winoa ryder sexes creatures of the night (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 21 June 2011 22:16 (1 year ago) Permalink

I was toying with doing a Disco one. Keep those wide open is the best way I say, and let the voters decide whether they're happy with a track as disco. It worked fine on the showcasing poll, except that The Cure sneaked into the top 5.

Oh man, my job is Excel-based so now I imagining formatting possibilities and vlookup potential.. but I'm only good for Belle & Sebastian, Pulp or Modest Mouse, I'm not nearly enough of a completist for most other bands now that Blur's been done.

Alright, I made an excel file that should be useful, hopefully.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ZQBPGXI6

Basically it's got a sheet where you dump in the songs and their ranks, and a formula that compares rank to point value which is listed on a separate sheet. Then there are suggestions and examples for making a pivot table to corral the data, or a suggestion for doing it manually.

I hope it's useful! /nerd

^^if I didn't make it clear.. I'm really hoping someone will find it useful. This is why I chose computers over English ;)

I'll do Pulp at #4 if no one else objects? Understand if too close to Pulp/Manics/Boos. Mostly I just want to play with my Excel file now.

a Pet Shop Boys Poll! My brain is already hurting.

Gukbe, Thursday, 23 June 2011 01:31 (1 year ago) Permalink

Hmm...not sure. Going by a quick Google, Ardent was not a subsidiary of Stax, Stax just handled distribution for them. Depends on where we want to set the boundaries,

sword of (seandalai), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 21:49 (2 days ago) Permalink

I thought Stax had bought a share of Ardent Records as well, though can't find any detailed history of the label online. Recently listened to the Thank You Friends comp of Stax-era Ardent recordings, was disappointed at how thin it was other than the Big Star-related tracks (which make up over one-third of the set).

and in his absence, she (Lee626), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 22:43 (2 days ago) Permalink

Q: Is the reissue of any Ardent product possible, say through the sales of tapes to other companies, or through another agreement on your part?

FRY: Under the terms of the distribution agreement with Stax, they own the masters. Any masters that were actually delivered to them and deemed satisfactory for release and put out became property of Stax. There is at present a great deal of litigation going on to determine who is going to wind up owning that property. No one right now is in a position to say that they have a clear title. There are a number of creditors who claim security agreements and so forth. That is going to have to be decided in the courts. When someone establishes clear title, they would be in a position to sell the tapes or license somebody to manufacture and release product. If there was a demand. We’ve had some inquiries from England which we have not been able to handle because of the legal situation.

I had an idea today that was either brilliant or really stupid -- y'all be the judge. Each December when we start the EOY hiatus, we do a radio-button poll of the artist polls still to come -- "which one are you most looking forward to?" Winner gets to jump to the head of the line in February.

WilliamC, Thursday, 23 May 2013 21:34 (Yesterday) Permalink

you need to poll that possibility

Euler, Thursday, 23 May 2013 21:36 (Yesterday) Permalink

in that case I'll start my campaign for the CCR poll with this:

Creedence Clearwater Revival vs the Grateful Dead vs the Band

ḉrut (crüt), Thursday, 23 May 2013 21:36 (Yesterday) Permalink

I kinda like that idea actually! Lets us keep the organized, take-your-turn system of the polls while introducing a little big of unpredictability so it doesn't just feel like waiting out an endless countdown.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 23 May 2013 21:57 (Yesterday) Permalink

That's what I was thinking! And doing it just once a year wouldn't be too disruptive, and doing it during the hiatus would give the poll-runner time to prepare.

WilliamC, Thursday, 23 May 2013 21:59 (Yesterday) Permalink

during Carnival, the artist being polled should run a poll of ILX posters. we can kickstart the funds for this.
