do you think i'm to blame?

i associate this song with the party that, oddly, followed my high school graduation (which was somewhat after its release). nevertheless, it is awesome, so let us praise it.

is its pattern, in fact, abacab?
is it an illusion?
is it a game?

mookieproof, Saturday, 4 June 2011 05:06 (2 years ago) Permalink

Isn't it in, like, 11/4 or something?

i think the pattern is a bab cab, plus an intro.
yes

A) This song is in relentless 4/4
B) I have played bass on this song in a live setting and doing so is uber boring.

hard for me to imagine a world where a song this awesome was new on the radio. what happened?

great song from a very good Genesis album, one of the few post-Gabriel I'm a fan of.

yea, hard to believe this was a single really...

Great song, but I always forget it exists when "No Reply At All" starts up, as it is the best song.
Also good is the Dodo -> Lurker b-side one two punch.

This is an unbearably heavy record, by the way, production-wise it makes a lot of contemporaneous records sound like pablum.

really the only song I don't like on that album is Whodunit?

It's a bad song but worth it just for the phased-out transition from "we know" to "we ALL know"

And "Me and Sarah Jane" is pretty lousy tbh

duh, yeah. thought i counted 33 beats through the chorus, but it's just 32. looked for weirdness and tricked myself into finding it.

I love this song so much. Ówen P's love for "No Reply at All" as well.

I always replace "abacab" with "happy cat" when I hear this. In my head. (I'm allowed.)

I love this song. I think the version on "Three Sides Live" is the definite one.

reminds me of lying in bed after dark, as a little kid with my first battery powered radio. adjusting that big antenna on it to get the stations to come in properly. this was always on.

The intro has a rather obvious influence:

Otherwise, the song is OK, but not anything close to Genesis at their best. The "Abacab" album is among their least Genesis-sounding, and also among their lesser albums.

My roommate heard the one line as "there's a hole in the subway!" which led to a whole alternate reading of the song as being about a subterranean gang operating out of secret subway tunnels, etc. I have no recollection of how the rest of the lyrics could be tied to this, mind you. Great song, the chorus organ part is one of my favorite little things to fiddle out when I sit down at a keyboard (although agreed, the bass part is kind of absurdly plodding).

Overall good record although off the top of my head I can't reconstruct any of the second side...
