i saw harvey play a beach party here in hawaii just three days ago. a half hour before sunset he put on E2-E4. about 25 minutes in i went up to him and asked, "are you going to play this one all the way through?" he smiled huge and replied "of course, man!" it was dark by the time the song's 58th minute rolled around. the mixture of an epic sunset with an epic track orchestrated by such a master selector created something hard to describe. it will probably remain one of my top 5 musical moments for the rest of my life.

Not many could pull that off. I remember reading in Muzik magazine about 15 years ago that a DJ submitted a mix for Bedroom DJ of the Month had done this - much hilarity that 2/3rds of mix was one record! Balearic state of mind etc..

surprised nobody's riding for double or antena

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 23 May 2011 04:03 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i mean they're pretty much apples and oranges in terms of style, it's just that instinctual genius for pacing and inspired selection coupled with a completely unfuckwithable tracklist -- "garden of earthly delights", "new jersey deep", "not reggae", "new day" etcetc. totally sets out a vibe in the first few bars of the first record and rides it out seamlessly over the entire mix. i'm not always into that kinda tasteful gilles peterson endorsed flat cap wearing dude house but he somehow manages to make it sound so exhilarating

Snámh dá Én (missingNO), Monday, 23 May 2011 04:16 (twelve years ago) link

This really has to be one of the most influential single mixes of the last 10 years.

The first A Mountain of One EP is like a band rerecording the first 30 minutes live.

Tim F, Monday, 23 May 2011 04:21 (twelve years ago) link

when did it drop?

D-40, Monday, 23 May 2011 04:41 (twelve years ago) link

I don't really know the history of the sarcastic disco mix? When did it stop being something that people only had if they'd bought clothes from Sarcastic and an actual widespread phenom? Earliest mention here is 2005 (by Vahid of course).

AMO1 first EP was late 2006 or early 2007 I think - even includes a cover of "Can't Be Serious".

Tim F, Monday, 23 May 2011 05:01 (twelve years ago) link

i remember reading that lindstrom called this mix 'the album of the century'

obv claudja barry has the best track here. not sure how its glory wouldn't be apparent from any possible angle, but if you think it's boring, try... listening to the chorus again? i mean there is lush melody packed into just about every corner of the song, but srsly. btw, anyone know where to find the extended version outside the 'selections from sarcastic disco' (bootleg? so crackly) - or for that matter have there been any good edits?

i'm surprised that holger czukay didn't pull any votes. or hallucinations! such a great track, i'm gonna put it on now - i can't even think of it without it stuck in my head for the next week

Hollywood Symphony was my second choice. And Our Prayer third. I love the whole first half so much, the sequencing and everything is perfect.

Citizen Smith (Jamie T Smith), Friday, 27 May 2011 10:26 (twelve years ago) link

Any news on his long awaited first UK date/s in forever? Or did it happen and I missed it?

Citizen Smith (Jamie T Smith), Friday, 27 May 2011 10:27 (twelve years ago) link

i dont think so? afaik the last time he played in london was in 2008 and i missed it...

just sayin, Friday, 27 May 2011 10:39 (twelve years ago) link

If it was then, then so did I! But I thought the whole deal was he was playing for the first time outside the US in a decade last summer in Europe and Japan, but was going to play the UK at some point.

The reissue is avail to pre-order on CD at harvey.dj. Throwing in some more support for Love for the Sake of Love. First spring-y day of the year a few years ago, I had it come up on shuffle on my iPod and just let it ride out on repeat for a long walk home.

Also surprised Holger Czukay didn't get a single vote but it is tough competition.
