WOW. This is pretty awesome. I’m not super into Witchhouse but I love bands like Cccandy, Hussle Club and Blessure Grave. Going to give some of these groups another listen while checking this out. Thanks Mishka

Didn't notice Gatekeeper on the list, the Giza EP isn't bad. Love the Atari cartridge worthy cover art.

(xpost) no, it's kind of like distorted slowed down trance, heard via a slightly mistuned radio. It's OK-ish, but not great.

^^ this band is great but they've been going for 3-4 years now, amirite? not sure how they'd fit in w/ "gravewave" or watever this shit is

how did "gravewave" leapfrog "haunted house" as the next silly microgenre title?

"haunted house" makes sense, people!

The Jokers of the Scene remix of Asia by Salem was one of my favourite tracks of last year and I think Gatekeeper are amazing.

That said, most of these tracks are pretty dire. Cult Of Youth, for example, sound like mid-period New Model Army. Utterly without merit.

soft metals are completely awesome, the rest of this music can fuck off imo

Anything worth listening out of these?

soft metals
memory tapes (probably not that remix though)
like some stuff by Jokers of the Scene (new Shit Robot rmx of them is good)

uh yeah that's about it

dmr, Saturday, 22 January 2011 19:16 (2 years ago) Permalink

This is so stupid, how is there any connection at all between most of these artists

I mean you could draw a pretty solid TriangleWave line between five or six of these bands but otherwise this is basically a useless comp

We are literally forcing shit into genres now, there's not even an attempt to make anything concrete

That said, Blessure Grave are awesome (as are Gatekeeper)

The Dutch of Dukes, Saturday, 22 January 2011 20:03 (2 years ago) Permalink

There's actually a lot of really interesting bands in the Witch-house scene when you dig around past Salem and oOoOO. Have any of you heard the Creep mix on FACT? Really great spooky sounds on both sides of the pond!

sub rosarie, Sunday, 23 January 2011 23:59 (2 years ago) Permalink

Can't say I've heard many people mention grave-wave before now!

sub rosarie, Sunday, 23 January 2011 23:59 (2 years ago) Permalink

Ah this is a classic "made up by 90s NME staffer in lunch hour"-style fake genre. It's always nice to see there are people who can be bothered to corral a load of bands no one cares about together purely for the sake of it. These New Puritans being the structurally necessary band that people actually listen to.

Matt DC, Monday, 24 January 2011 00:04 (2 years ago) Permalink

^otm

Kerr with all respect you are kind of a mark when it comes to this thing - anyone who is invested in music culture enough to make up a damn genre name and try and tell people about it is probably also gonna know how much it winds ppl up, and to a large degree be doing exactly that

Kind of aghast, honestly. It sounds like a cross between 90s Planetary Assault System tracks and the Propellerheads.

Maybe with a little Front Line Assembly thrown in, its frickin weird.
