Thunderbolt Pagoda is the new project from Erik Wivinius, formerly of Salamander -- just ordered the newest album but I haven't heard it yet.

Grabbed mp3s of some live tape that Sadhu Sadhu put out & recall liking it a lot. Vague recollection of it being kinda White Hills/Heavy Winged.

I have seen Catacombz put on thrilling and inspired shows, I've also seen them phone it in.
The cassettes that they make are very listenable.

Snuck out at the end of last year but Shedding's Tear in the Sun is great goddamn morning drone catnip for me right this second. Harmonium drones, contemplative vocals, Spacemen 3's non-rock part goes New Zealand.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 13 January 2011 15:37 (thirteen years ago) link

Please excuse me for the plug but I just thought some of you may be into the content of my (mostly) drone / ambient / noise blog: http://superreceptor.tumblr.com

Recent posts have included Will Long of Celer, Richard Skelton, Kevin Drumm, Rafael Anton Irisarri, Motion Sickness Of Time Travel...

Last year's version of this thread was a constant source of gold for me, so I'm really looking forward to what it throws up this year.

The fourth annual event is set to take place April 29 - May 1 2011 at Mexitas Events Center. Important here to note that this is a new venue for the festival. Peaking Lights "936" blew me away on the first listen. Reminds me of a poppier Blues Control. Very Kosmiche. Sun Araw fans might wanna check it out, too.

International Waters, Monday, 21 February 2011 01:59 (thirteen years ago) link

I blind bought the new Peaking Lights based on past quality. Kind of worried it will be too poppy/formless/chillwave tribal. Earlier shit was noisy/murky/more menacing.

old and new minimalist-drone from pauline oliveros, eliane radigue, yoshi wada, and sun circle:

the yoshi wada is great, it's like a twenty-minute sustained high note on a bagpipe. oh wait, ten minutes in suddenly something happened. now it's kind of… woobering. woovering.

i'm having the same reaction. wasn't that blown away by them before; this new one though's reminding me of the less synthy aspects of harmonia's deluxe

reggie (qualmsley), Monday, 28 February 2011 14:32 (thirteen years ago) link

Maybe the new Peaking Lights is hitting me like it's chillwave for people who hate chillwave. I'm enjoying the lack of menace, even though some of those basslines are still awful heavy. I dunno, it's been taking me "there" all week, though. It also led me back to Blue Control's "Local Flavor", which sounded great in the car this week during Atlanta's way premature springtime.

International Waters, Monday, 28 February 2011 15:13 (thirteen years ago) link

Psychic Paramount II is relentless. Like I gotta get some air after listening to it straight through. This Heat guitars with a drummer who sounds like he's auditioning for Mahavishnu Orchestra.

I really really really really really really really really like that Motion Sickness of Time Travel EP, definitely one of my favorite records of the year so far.

also mad props to Brad at Digitalis for literally tracking my lost copy down and bribing some dude in Alabama to send it my way

The Land Berore Time (jamescobo), Monday, 28 February 2011 22:44 (thirteen years ago) link

Blues Control Local Flavor kind of casting a shadow over all related scenes. That's a monster right there. My TT has been broke down for about a month but I just got a new one, literally, tonight and may set it up and dig into some stuff discussed here that I've missed (Motion Sickness of Time Travel, Peaking Lights). Already a pretty great year.

I guess this is the spot to mention that I saw Samara Lubelski/Marcia Bassett duo last week and it was very good, all kinds of noisy/harsh but v. hypnotic. Tom Carter/Marc Orleans new duo played as well, tore the place up. Pete Nolan was supposed to be on drums but canceled, didn't recognize the drummer. First jam was tentative but solid, second one was out of control. I think they have a record coming out eventually on Northern Spy. Pretty psyched for that one possibly.

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Tuesday, 1 March 2011 01:39 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, blues control are definitely a fave of mine. I like that they don't flood the market like a lot of these bands too... but I could use some new blues control already.

bear, bear, bear, Thursday, 12 May 2011 05:50 (twelve years ago) link

The friendship of Eternal Tapestry and Sun Araw's Cameron Stallones goes back to the Not Not Fun curated Neon Commune Fest, January 2007 at the much loved, and missed, Echo Curio in Eagle Rock, LA. Eternal Tapestry shared the second night's bill with Cameron's old band Magic Lantern (Barn Owl and Pocahaunted rounded out the night's festivities!), and the two psych crews hit it off immediately. LA shows were played together every time Eternal Tapestry made it south. Fast forward to Austin, TX for SXSW 2010 when Eternal Tapestry shared a bizarre afternoon parking lot gig with Sun Araw. The Tapestry had a live broadcast in-studio session lined up on KVRX student radio that night, and in true Tapestry fashion they invited their buddy Cameron to join in.

The session took place in a large TV studio on the UT campus, with the band setting up in a big circle. The line-up was Dewey Mahood and Nick Bindeman on guitars, Jed Bindeman on drums, Ryan Carlile on tenor sax, Yoni Kifle on bass, and Cameron Stallones on keyboard and trademark flute. After a brief discussion of mood, the six musicians improvised together for 45 minutes continuously. The music is heard as played that evening - no overdubs, and only a few edits to create a four section suite for the LP release. The piece is titled Night Gallery, in homage to the surreal early 1970's TV show produced by Rod Serling of Twilight Zone fame. It was this program that the six musicians fell asleep to, and woke up with, during their five day stay in Austin.

Yeah, the new pulse emitter tape is really something. Was listening to an older cd-r and it was pleasant but the difference between that an the newer material is pretty night and day. Excess fat has been trimmed, the tempos have slowed, and it all just feels much less improvised and I couldn't be happier
