And it was a corporate gig, too. These guys are like an SNL skit come to life.

pompladude: "so, ryan has been learning some slap bass recently!" it is the end times

OMG, my wife just tells me that Pomplamoose means grapefruit in German!
― Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 12 November 2011 13:04 (twelve years ago) link
"ryan" apparently plays in ben folds' band. crowd applauds politely. pomplamoose tells ryan to say something in an australian accent, because he's been touring in australia. ryan says some shit. crowd is silent. drummer makes a sad little rimshot sound.

It's French, no? xpost
― Number None, Saturday, 12 November 2011 13:09 (twelve years ago) link
oh it's another pomplamoose song i'm okay with, "aching heart." it's the one where pomplamoose recommends you sleep with a prostitute if you're depressed. it's off-key and off-rhythm.

xpost I think it's grapefruit in German AND French!

chick's voice can't withstand the rigors of this "telephone" cover, she's singing the stuttery parts live and it's just this sad atonal bleat
― dreamleaf, sparkleroot, basilisk venom tinctures (reddening), Saturday, 12 November 2011 13:16 (twelve years ago) link
oh yeah, here ryan goes, playing the slap bass. oh and the rest of them are joining in for an impromptu jam! actually this is livelier and more pleasing than anything they've played so far. thirty seconds in pomplachick says flatly "okay, you can stop now" because she's not participating in any of this.
― dreamleaf, sparkleroot, basilisk venom tinctures (reddening), Saturday, 12 November 2011 13:19 (twelve years ago) link
Yeah, grapefruit in French and German, although I always assumed the German was borrowed from the French. The word in Spanish is related- "pomelo." In Spain, that is, in lots of Latin American they have another word, "toronja." Their name is a sly tribute tohttp://4.bp.blogspot.com/_fgePaP-TVwk/SlYmETrq93I/AAAAAAAAAZc/QfVL0qsrD-c/s400/grapefruit.jpg

xp yeah, i tried to make the case for some of their songs during the early mass pile-on! i still enjoy those songs and listen to them sometimes, so it should have special resonance when i say this is god-awful.

to solve the above mystery, a grapefruit in german is called "pampelmuse". someone should start a crowdfunded kraftwerk-twee-hybrid with that name.

Pampelmuse but isn't that the old word and nowadays it's just "die Grapefruit"?

Just curious about the setlist's 'originals:covers' ratio
― billstevejim, Sunday, 13 November 2011 07:09 (twelve years ago) link
60:40, maybe? maybe even more weighted toward originals than that.
after a good night's sleep i'm still kinda O_O at the confluence of negative factors: sloppy musicianship throughout, strained and wobbly lead vocals, cartoonish background vocals performed smirkily, like "oh well, we can't do any better, might as well make a joke out of it!" the ironic pop covers were listless and badly performed, everyone's stage presence was grating and try-hard, and they just would NOT shut up and let their music speak for itself, AT ALL. i can see their patter working in front of an audience already familiar with them from youtube, but this crowd wasn't into it and they refused to change tactics or dial it back for the entire show.
